Anko Mitarashi is a Tokubetsu Jōnin of Konohagakure and ANBU, who teaches at Konohagakure's Academy.
Background[]
Early Life[]
Orochimaru and Anko
When she was a genin, Orochimaru took a strong interest in Anko, teaching her several of his signature jutsu and what he'd learned about immortality. Later, Anko was on a team led by Orochimaru. This was done in order to strengthen the ties between Orochimaru and Danzō Shimura, while also simultaneously completing the 3-person requirement needed for Team Orochimaru to enter the Chūnin Exams.
Prologue: Team Orochimaru
Its other members were Arikurin Shiin, and an unnamed shinobi who would eventually become the leader of a team of spies for Orochimaru. During the first round of the Exams, Arikurin used his advanced hearing and listened to the strokes of other ninja's pencils to determine what they were writing for the written test. He would then pass the information off to one of Anko's snakes. The second portion of the Chūnin Exams was is structured such that at least half the teams will be eliminated. Before entering the Forest of Death, all teams were given one of 2 scrolls.

Once inside the forest, the genin must take the other scroll from another team. Only those that make it to the tower in the centre of the forest with both scrolls will advance to the next stage of the exams. The Third Hokage and all the sensei monitored the fights remotely. Team Orochimaru confronted a team consisting of Hayate Gekkō, Ibiki Morino, and Tokara. They were easily defeated after Anko summoned a large snake to help fight. During the next round, however, Anko is defeated by Kurenai's genjutsu.

Orochimaru eventually used Anko as a test subject for his Cursed Seal of Heaven. Of the ten subjects, Anko was the only survivor. Unwilling to kill her because she was so valuable as a research subject, Orochimaru altered Anko's memory so she would believe she'd been abandoned for lacking the ideal drive to fuel the cursed seal. She always held a grudge against Orochimaru for what he did and believed it was her responsibility, as his former student, to stop his criminal actions. She later joins the Thirds Hokages personal ANBU's training division.

Anko is loud, stubborn, and prone to acting without thinking. Despite this, she has a strong commitment to her village and mission, often choosing to face threats alone in order to buy time for her allies to escape or for backup to arrive.

Full appearance
Anko has has light brown, pupil-less eyes. Her hair is violet and styled in a short, spiky, fanned-out ponytail. As an adult, she usually wears a custom-made outfit that is crafted of thin metal mesh to fit the lines of her body, that covers her from neck to thigh. Over this, she typically wears a black overcoat, a dark orange mini-skirt, a dark blue belt, and pale grey shin guards. During her time with ANBU, Anko wears a porcelain mask and the standard Anbu uniform, consisting of black and grey armour, metal arm guards and a katana strapped to her back. She has the signature Anbu tattoo on her right shoulder.
Abilities[]
Being an ANBU and Tokubetsu Jōnin, Anko is indeed a highly skilled kunoichi. Even as a child, her talent gained the attention of Orochimaru who would take her up as his disciple. She has excellent tracking skills, evidenced by her being placed in charge of a team tasked with finding Kabuto Yakushi.
Ninjutsu[]
While under Orochimaru's wing, Anko was subjected to intense training that not only honed her existing skills but also introduced her to many of Orochimaru's most dangerous and forbidden techniques. Orochimaru saw potential in her and, as a result, took her under his direct tutelage. Her training was brutal, but she excelled, adapting to the dark arts quickly. Anko can use Hidden Shadow Snake Hands and its stronger variant. She could also perform Orochimaru's murder-suicide technique as well. It was also revealed that she's able to manipulate Fire and Yin Release; performing the Fire Release: Dragon Fire Technique and Sly Mind Affect Technique respectively.

She was also the first surviving recipient of his Cursed Seal of Heaven, which appears as three tomoe at the back of her neck. It is eventually removed from her body following the Fourth Shinobi World War. She has been stated to have built up an immunity to poisons with Orochimaru's help

Land of Swamps Escort Mission[]

Anko Mitarashi and Arikurin were assigned to protect Chichiatsu, the daimyō of the Land of Swamps. The intelligence was vague, but the assassination attempt threat was real. Under the cover of night, the trio moved through the dense marshlands, their senses sharp for any sign of danger. As they neared the daimyō’s safe house, shadows shifted between the trees. Without warning, masked assassins launched their attack. A volley of kunai shot from the trees, each aimed with deadly precision. Anko shoved Chichiatsu aside, twisting mid-air as serpents erupted from her sleeves, deflecting the projectiles with their coiled bodies. Arikurin dodged effortlessly, his own kunai slicing through the darkness killing one of the attackers.
Part I[]
Chunin Exam[]
Anko calls for back-up
Anko serves as the proctor for the second stage of the Chūnin Exams in Konoha. She bursts into the room, scolding the first stage’s proctor, Ibiki Morino, for allowing too many genin to advance. She then leads the candidates to the Forest of Death, where the second stage begins. Shortly after the exam is underway, Anko is informed of a grim discovery—three dead Kusa-nin, including Shiore. Upon examining their faceless bodies, she realizes they’ve been dead for some time. The gruesome scene leads her to a chilling conclusion: Orochimaru has infiltrated the Chūnin Exams.

She orders that the Third Hokage be informed of what's happened, that two teams of ANBU be deployed, and then goes into the forest to find Orochimaru on her own. She locates him shortly after nightfall and tries to use the Twin Snakes Mutual Death Technique on him, only to discover at the last moment that she's been attacking a shadow clone. He reactivates her dormant Cursed Seal of Heaven, immobilising her with the pain, and warns her not to cancel the Chūnin Exams before departing. She is later found by Arikurin

Arikurin escorts a wounded Anko to the center of the Forest of Death, where the Third Hokage treats her Cursed Seal. After hearing her report, Hiruzen deduces that Orochimaru is targeting Sasuke Uchiha, whom Orochimaru has already branded with another Cursed Seal of Heaven. Arikurin proposes removing Sasuke from the exams and placing him under guard, but the Third Hokage insists the exams proceed as Orochimaru intends, believing it’s safer to monitor him closely.

Anko attempts to stop Temari
As the invasion begins, Anko faces off against Temari, immediately demanding to know if Orochimaru is leading the assault. Without hesitation, she unleashes a stream of Fire Release, but Temari counters with a powerful swing of her fan, dispersing the flames and sending Anko skidding back.Regaining her footing, Anko swiftly closes the distance, weaving through the gusts of wind as she hurls kunai laced with explosive tags. Temari deflects them with another swing of her fan, but the tags detonate midair, forcing her to shield herself.

Seizing the moment, Anko lunges in with a kunai, but Temari narrowly evades the strike, retaliating with a slicing wind attack that forces Anko to leap away. Before their battle can continue, Baki intervenes, blocking Anko’s path and giving Temari the chance to escape with Gaara. Undeterred, Anko gives chase, weaving through the chaos of the battlefield. As she gains on them, Kankurō suddenly appears, releasing his puppet to deploy a thick smokescreen, obscuring their path. By the time the smoke clears, the Sand Siblings have vanished. Anko curses under her breath before turning her attention back to the battle raging in Konoha.
Kaima Capture Mission[]
Arikurin and Anko team-up
Konoha is commissioned to escort a delivery ship and investigate a series of mysterious sea monster attacks in the Land of the Sea. Given that this is the very place where Anko first received her Cursed Seal from Orochimaru, Tsunade assigns Anko as the mission leader, hoping the experience will help her recover lost memories of her past. To ensure additional support, Arikurin is assigned as her backup. Upon arrival, Anko's Cursed Seal unexpectedly begins to resonate, sending waves of searing pain through her body. Overwhelmed, she collapses, slipping into unconsciousness.
After regaining consciousness, Anko’s fragmented memories begin to resurface. She recalls that years ago, Orochimaru had secretly established a hidden laboratory in this very region, using it as a testing ground for his gruesome human experiments. Over time, these horrors gave rise to local legends of spirits abducting people, concealing the dark truth behind the disappearances. Anko becomes determined to eradicate Orochimaru’s abandoned laboratory. However, upon reaching the site, they fall into a trap—ambushed by Amachi, a rogue medical-nin and one of Orochimaru’s former scientific collaborators, who refuses to let his master’s work be erased so easily.

Arikurin and Ariko
During the Interlude, Arikurin and Anko developed a deep connection, eventually leading to a romantic relationship. However, as ANBU operatives, their love was not without its struggles. ANBU lived in the shadows, their lives defined by secrecy, deception, and constant danger. Missions took priority over personal desires, and attachments were often seen as liabilities. However, they eventually had a son named Arikō.

Pain's Assault[]
Anko is worried about her son
When the invasion began, Anko was away on a mission trying to locate and capture Kabuto. Just when they located Kabuto, Yamato was alerted to the fact that Naruto had broken the seal he had placed on the First Hokage's Necklace, and was about to completely release the Nine-Tails with a seal appearing in his palm with the number of tails that Naruto had manifested. Anko was noticeably worried about her son. Upon returning to the village, she was horrified at the level of destruction following the attack, and even more surprised to hear that no one died. What truly amazed Anko was that Arikurin actually cared for their son.
Fourth Shinobi World War: Countdown[]
Anko attacks Kabuto
Anko and her team continue to monitor the Mountains' Graveyard. When Muta Aburame detects the mobilisation of the White Zetsu Army, Anko instructs her team to inform the Allied Shinobi Forces while she goes after Kabuto. She tries to sneak up on Kabuto and attack him, but is quickly defeated. Tobi orders that Kabuto kill her, but he instead keeps her comatose, siphoning the chakra from her cursed seal to strengthen his Summoning: Impure World Reincarnation.
Fourth Shinobi World War: Confrontation[]

Although Yamato is gone and Sai also returns to Konoha, a restaffed Reconnaissance Party continues to track Kabuto. They eventually come across three dead Takigakure ninja. From the bite marks on their necks, it becomes clear to Anko that Kabuto has gained control of Orochimaru's powers, but she wonders why he's leaving behind bodies for them to find. Wary of a trap, they follow the trail of bodies to the Mountains' Graveyard. Tokuma Hyūga scouts the area with his Byakugan and reports that Kabuto is in the company of Tobi. Believing they have found the Akatsuki base, Anko immediately sends word of their discovery to Konoha, only briefly wondering why Kabuto would lead them there.
After Kabuto is defeated by Itachi Uchiha and Sasuke Uchiha, Anko's unconscious body is found by Jūgo. Wishing to speak with Orochimaru, Sasuke uses the Evil Releasing Method to revive Orochimaru from her cursed seal, causing her cursed seal to disappear in the process. Anko remains unconscious throughout the ordeal and they leave her behind. In the aftermath of the Fourth Shinobi World War, Anko attends the mass funeral held in Konoha.
New Era[]
Academy Entrance Arc[]
Anko becomes an instructor at Konoha's Academy.
School Trip Arc[]
To improve relationships with other villages and symbolically show the warring era was over, the Seventh Hokage set up an official class trip for the Academy to go to Kirigakure. Anko joined Shino to watch over the class. Upon arriving, they were met with Kagura Karatachi, who was appointed by the Mizukage to act as the class' tour guide. The class was later taken to meet Chōjūrō, the Sixth Mizukage.
Graduation Exams Arc[]
During the practical and final test of the graduation exam, the class was brought to the training field. There, the entire class was set up to face Anko, Shino, and Konohamaru for 24 hours. While the teachers would still evaluate the students' respective improvements, the students' true test was against Kakashi Hatake. The Sixth Hokage quickly explained that he would only pass the first student who is able to take the single bell attached to his hip.
Parent and Child Day[]
Arikurin and Anko
Arikruin and and Anko leave a meeting and discuss Naruto's announcement of the new Parent and Child Day holiday. The two discuss how the shinobi life has changed since their days. Later that day, Ako spots an advert for a Parent and Child Day eating contest, and wants to enter it. She eventually convinces Ariko to be her partner. At the contest, they also find Sai and Inojin, Rock Lee, Metal Lee, Shikamaru and Shikadai participating as well. During the final, the conspiring cook put shallow bowls for the Dōtonbori to give them an advantage. Then, the cook interferes using ninjutsu to cause the dumplings to grow out of control. Anko and Ariko try to deal with it, but it takes Chōji growing in size to end the issue by eating them all, and then burning through the calories by converting them into chakra.
