This technique allows the user to instantly replace themselves with a tree log or another object before they are to be struck. Because the attack does hit something appearing to the be user, opponents may briefly believe that they've successfully struck them. However, this is merely an optical illusion and opponents will quickly notice what's happened. If users are fast enough, they can use this brief lapse in the opponent's attention to stage a counterattack. The replacement object itself has been shown to used a form of an attack by applying explosive tags. Alternatively, this technique offers a good opportunity for users to escape.

This technique can evidently only be used in response to what would be harmful attacks. This is demonstrated when Pain only escapes from Jiraiya's Wild Lion's Mane Technique when Jiraiya tries to kill him with it, but when using the same technique to keep Pain restrained first, Pain remained captured.
