The Chakra Virus.
The Chakra Virus (チャクラウイルス, chakura uirusu) is a rare but dangerous virus which turns a person’s chakra into what Tsunade Senju described as “progressive and degenerative disease”. For this reason, shinobi are very afraid of it.
Overview[]
The first cases of the chakra virus were recorded in the Land of Whirlpools during the Second Shinobi World War after the nation was invaded by a combined force of shinobi from Iwagakure, Kirigakure, and Kumogakure. Once Uzushiogakure was destroyed, the case of chakra virus broke out and spread amongst the Kumo, Kiri, and Iwa forces while the surviving Uzumaki clan had resistance from the specific strain and escaped underground. Kumo, Kiri, and Iwa were forced to abandon Whirlpool Country and return home after losing so many of their forces to both the chakra virus and skirmishes from the remaining Uzumaki clan who would rebuild their society underground. Once the war was over, the chakra virus became less deadly over the years before evolving again and killing hundreds more. This time, Konoha worked overtime to develop a vaccine to counteract the new form of the chakra virus while they were eliminating Akatsuki members in the Land of Fire.
Symptoms[]
When contracting the virus, molding chakra becomes more difficult, and the patient will develop a fever and flu-like symptoms, followed by hemoptysis and other internal infections.
Trivia[]
- The events surrounding the chakra virus are akin to the outbreak and spread of the Spanish Flu during World War I; however, the chakra virus works in a similar way to HIV/AIDS.
- Zetsu hypothesized Itachi Uchiha contracted the chakra virus just prior to his battle with Sasuke and Shindō. Shortly after the battle, Tobi performed an autopsy on Itachi’s corpse and confirmed Zetsu’s hypothesis.
