Unlike ordinary fire, coldfire does not emerge as a process of combustion; therefore, it is not hot. As it's name suggests, it actually feels painfully cold, although this is because it absorbs the heat of whatever it touches. By absorbing an objects heat, it causes that objects temperature to drop and eventually begin to freeze. Creatures and people exposed to coldfire will begin to experience hypothermia and become afflicted with frostbite. When a victims body temperature drops too low, their heart, nervous system, brain, and other bodily organs will cease to function properly. In addition to hypothermia and potential frostbite, victims can be frozen solid. One a body part or another organic substance has been frozen, it can begin to whiter away and crumble into powder-like snow, in a similar manner to how ordinary flames incinerate things until they are reduced to ash. Oftentimes, the only thing remaining of victims of coldfire techniques is a mound of snow powder.

Heat absorbed into the coldfire is converted into a special chakra which can only be used to fuel the flames, increasing their size and encouraging their spread, however this process sees diminishing returns and the flames will go out entirely eventually. Coldflame has a much shorter lifespan than ordinary flames and cannot burn for long without constant chakra consumption from the user. It should be noted that air is too poor a conductor to fuel the flames alone. However, if the heat absorbed comes from a source of chakra such as a person or fire release ninjutsu, then some of that source's chakra is also absorbed with the heat as well. If such is the case, the coldfire can later be consumed by the user to replenish their chakra reserves.

Coldfire Release: Ring of Wicked Blue

Known Wielders Fuyumi Yukimura

Coldfire Release (冷火遁, Reikaton) is a Nature transformation kekkei tōta, a combination of Water, Wind, and Fire. While there may be other kekkei tōta involving these three elements, it's important to note that this kekkei tōta is functionally a fire release shape transformation combined with an ice release nature transformation (derived from wind and water). It is best envisioned as fire given an icy nature, as opposed to ice given a fiery shape, which it is not. It's easily recognized by its signature blue flames.

Because coldfire grants the user the ability to convert frozen things into snow, ice itself (be it natural or chakra-based) can be converted if coldfire is applied in great enough intensity; thus coldfire users can potentially counter ice release users in certain situation.

As a general rule of thumb, coldfire absorbs the chakra of its victims. This chakra can be absorbed by the user only if they absorb their fire back into themselves, typically by eating a coldfire orb of condensed chakra; depending on the type of coldfire this process is not always necessary, but in most cases it is. Additionally, if the user is making physical contact with their victim, their can directly absorb the victim's chakra via coldfire techniques (body contact absorption); this is most commonly seen in taijutsu instances.

Coldfire can be produced from the mouth of the user, cast from the body directly (ie. hands, feet, etc), and can even be manifested as floating wisps. The user has more control over coldfire as opposed to ordinary fire, and can direct the coldflames, extinguish them at-will, or return them to the user for chakra absorption. Additionally, the user can adjust the heat absorption of their coldfire, with higher heat absorption requiring more chakra, and resulting in faster freezing. This process is equivalent to a fire release user raising the temperature of their flames.

Similar to ordinary fire, coldfire can be snuffed out if submerged in water, trampled on, or covered in dirt or sand, although the quantity required in order to do so is much greater than ordinary fire. In smaller quantities, substances such as water will be frozen by the coldfire. However, if there is enough water, the coldfire will be snuffed out.

Fuyumi Yukimura

For Fuyumi Yukimura, Coldfire Release was a result of a genetic mutation involving her bloodline's Coldheart and Ice Release kekkei genkai. Despite gaining the power of her coldfire kekkei tōta, the mutation rendered her incapable of performing ordinary ice release, as well as any of the 5 basic elemental ninjutsu.

Trivia

  • Coldfire is considered a branch kekkei tōta of Ice Release and Coldheart.
