This technique is a speciality of Kuhaku Mugen, where one causes the surrounding area to be shrouded in darkness then goes in and out of sight at will from within the dark realm. Within the darkness, the user can make shadows take any number and form and attack foes with the addition of sucking their chakra if they get caught. How thick the darkness is depends on the amount of chakra kneaded into it. It can't fool the Byakugan, but, due to the darkness being created with the user's chakra, any Sharingan or Rinnegan user will see the darkness coloured by their opponent's chakra, which will effectively hide the user and allies from the dōjutsu.
Kuhaku has mastered the technique to such a degree, that he can make the shadows resemble himself to fool opponents and subjecting them to their worst fears if they hit the shadows.
