Ensui Nara (奈良エンスイ, Nara Ensui) is a shinobi from Konohagakure’s Nara clan.
Appearance[]
Ensui has black hair which he ties into a short, high-top ponytail. He also has a goatee and dark-green markings underneath his eyes[1] — which gives him a somewhat lazy, or tired appearance. Attire-wise, he wears the standard outfit of the Konoha shinobi consisting of the standard flak jacket and uniform. He, however, does not wear the Alliance’s forehead protector.
Personality[]
Ensui was a man of duty, as demonstrated to remain on task and doing what he needs to do to ensure his comrades’ survival, and of caution like when he warned Rock Lee not to pursue a retreating Gari who believed it was a trap which it was. He also has a strong will, unwilling to give up hope after Kurama was extracted from Naruto and even egging Shikamaru and his clansmen on when physically restraining the newly revived Ten-Tails with their hiden techniques. After the war, Ensui would become Shikamaru’s closest confidant when it came to clan matters when Shikamaru was away from Konoha.
Abilities[]
Ensui is very skilled with his clan’s secret techniques, able to use the Shadow Imitation Shadow Bind Technique to attach their shadow to a target to extend its range and catch its actual target. Unlike the original technique, Ensui can freely manipulate the degree of control he has and choose to make his target imitate his movements, and he would teach it later to Shikamaru once the latter assumed his role as clan leader shortly after the Fourth Shinobi World War. He is also capable of using the Shadow Sewing Technique. He was shown to be very intelligent, able to discern Kakashi Hatake’s strategy against members of the reincarnated Seven Ninja Swordsmen of the Mist and was able to figure out how Jinin Akebino used Kabutowari and came up with the best strategy to defeat and restrain him long enough for Tenzō Iburi to seal Jinin. Later, he was able to help Shikamaru and his fellow clansmen to help physically restrain the Ten-Tails after receiving Kurama’s chakra from Naruto.

Fourth Shinobi World War (Arc)[]

Kakashi’s strategy, initiated.
Ensui was assigned to the Third Division of the Allied Shinobi Forces. His teammate along with Santa Yamanaka were incorporated into Kakashi Hatake’s battle strategy to take out a reincarnated Zabuza Momochi to lift the mist that obscured the battlefield. He used his Shadow Imitation Technique to merge his own shadow with Kakashi’s while Santa took possession of their captain’s body. He was supposed to then use Kakashi’s shadow as an extension of the technique to stop Zabuza’s movements and then hold him down once Kakashi’s shadow had come into contact with Zabuza’s for to completely immobilize him; however, halfway through the plan, Kakashi’s attack was intercepted by Haku Yuki. After Zabuza cuts through Haku, Ensui told Santa that Kakashi only caught one enemy and immobilized Haku as he regenerated. When Kakashi successfully connected his shadow to Zabuza’s, he immediately immobilized him as well.

At the dawn of next of the battle, Ensui assists Kakashi in restraining a bisected Jinin Akebino until Tenzō Iburi completed his sealing technique. Gari arrives to prevent Jinin’s sealing and Rock Lee fights him off to defend the two. Debris from Gari’s explosion injures Ensui and his hold on Jinin is released. After Sai successfully seals Jinin, Gari retreats and as Lee attempts to pursue, Ensui convinces him not to.[2]
Birth of the Ten-Tails’ Jinchūriki[]
Main article: Naruto: A Shinobi Story/Birth of the Ten-Tails’ JinchūrikiAfter the entire Allied Shinobi Forces arrived to the main battlefield against the Ten-Tails, Ensui received some of Kurama’s chakra from Naruto, and together with Shikamaru and some of his other clansmen, immobilized the Ten-Tails. Like the rest of the world, he was trapped in the Infinite Tsukuyomi, until it was dispelled by Naruto and Sasuke.

- Ensui’s name, when written with different kanji, has different meanings:
- When written as 円錐, it means “cone”.
- When written as 塩水, it means “salt water”.
- In the novel, Ensui becomes Shikamaru’s closest confidant after the latter assumed the role as clan leader while his fate in the canonical Naruto remained unknown, but it is highly assumed he was at least freed from the Infinite Tsukuyomi once Sasuke and Naruto managed to undo it.
- Like Kiba Inuzuka and Tenten Higurashi, Ensui is one of the few known shinobi who uses elaborate booby traps which can mortally injure opponents.
