This technique allows the user to put an opponent within a genjutsu by using their finger as a medium. When Itachi Uchiha used the technique on Naruto Uzumaki, crows flocked from Itachi and turned into shuriken after he performed the ram seal which bombarded Naruto, and then attempted to put him to sleep. When he resisted the sleep command, Naruto then experienced the sensation of his body parts turning into his closest friends who then tortured him psychologically. This is implied to be an extra stage of the genjutsu caused by Itachi after performing the ram seal. The same goes along with his use of shuriken.

Izuna Uchiha had his own version of Ephemeral upon awakening his Mangekyō Sharingan, but instead of crows he uses butterflies which turn into shuriken which are so fast they can catch most opponents by surprise and either wound or instantly kill them. If they dodge them When his opponents failed to follow his sleep command, he will instead distort reality where up is down, left is right, and vice versa. Unlike Itachi who uses a finger as a medium, Izuna simply uses his Mangekyō and visually looks at his opponent to capture his intended target. Only his rival, Tobirama Senju, has successfully broken out of the technique by himself, but not without a literal scratch that would force Tobirama to develop countermeasures against Izuna, specifically.
