Tool Description[]
Bandages are typically made of cloth, but can also be made from unnaturally strong, yet durable materials. They're most often used to cover certain parts of the body, including (but not limited to): Hands, arms, legs, necks, and faces. They can be a stylistic alternative to wearing a mask, or be used to cover wounds or bruises.
Additionally, they can also serve a more combative role. As seen in techniques like the Front Lotus, they can bind an opponent, preventing them from moving or escaping. Other techniques, like Slashing Bandages, utilize Chakra Flow in order to physically maniupluate the bandages like weapons. These bandages are more hard and durable, yet still retain the fluidity of a normal "soft" bandage. It should be noted that channeling chakra through these bandages also increase their cutting power, allowing them to slice through rocks.
With regards to their effectiveness against elemental ninjutsu, bandages are naturally weak to fire, as they can easily be set aflame and burned if the user isn't careful; coating them in water will often negate this effect. Water typically has no effect on them, unless it is sharpened and used to cut, and the same goes for lightning and wind. However, if bandages are first soaked in water, then electricity can be channeled through them as a medium to be used against the bandage-wielder. It should be noted that most attempts to cut a chakra-enhanced/manipulated bandage will result in a similar effect to two blades simply clashing with one another, thus a chakra-enhanced bandage will typically be severed by only Wind Release ninjutsu. Earth release is naturally weak to being cut by bandages, however water and especially mud are useful tools for slowing down the bandages and increasing their weight. If earth or stone is hardened around a bandage tendril, then it may weigh down or completely stop the tendril's movement if the bandage is somehow unable to cut through the earth release technique using sharpened chakra.
For emergency situations, shinobi—especially Medical-Nin—may carry bandages as a first-aid tool.
Trivia[]
- Members of Kirigakure's Seven Ninja Swordsmen of the Mist typically wear bandages to cover certain parts of their body such as their necks, faces, and arms.
- "Sarashi" is the practice of binding one's breasts with bandages.
- Some characters, such as Kurenai Yuhi, seem to wear bandages as an alternative to pants (which is funny, but I'm not judging).
