The Giyagan (ギヤ眼, Lit Meaning: Gear Eye) is the lesser known dōjutsu kekkei genkai that first appeared in the now supposedly extinct Burūdeshi Tribe, this dōjutsu was later inherited selectively by their direct descendants, the Kōboku Clan. This dōjutsu is said to rival both the Byakugan and Sharingan.

Appearance

Passive State

While in its passive state, the irides are divided into two sets of blue circles that surround the pupil. The outer surface area of the iris, which borders the inner section, takes on more of a darker sapphire blue. As for the inner section of the iris, it adopts a lighter shade of sapphire blue compared to the outer section. This iconic blue color scheme helped earn the Giyagan its secondary nickname dubbed the Eye of Sapphires (目の青玉, Me no Seigyoku). At the point of activation, the thin black line circling the inner section of the irides instantly forms mesmerizingly into a distinct black eight sided cogwheel. As the eyes remain active, they begin to glow intensely, this is said to be a way to entice various individuals to maintain direct eye contact. The level of luminosity these eyes gives off is said to be bright enough to be seen in pitch black areas.

Pure Giyagan

The Burūdeshi’s version of this dōjutsu differs significantly. Instead of the traditional black eight sided cogwheel design, the tribe instead inherited a eight sided cogwheel with eight dramatically curved cogs. The cogwheel instead of being completely black is a slightly muted shade of light sapphire blue found in the inner section of the Kōboku’s version. Inside this cogwheel, the color gold surrounds the pupil. The rest of the irides is a slightly muted shade of dark sapphire blue. Both variants possess a striking purple sclera in each eye.

Acquisition

Early Days

A few generations after the clan’s initial formation, it was discovered that the Giyagan no longer appeared in every member born into the clan. Instead when the clan’s population saw an unusual spike in the birthrate of twins amongst the various families, clan elders learned that the first set of twins born now carried the genetic potential to awaken the much coveted dōjutsu. After a skirmish between two twin sisters ended in one of their deaths, it was witnessed that within moments she fully awakened her Giyagan. Eventually a new system was put in place called the Trial of Sacrifice (進むの犠牲, Shiken no Gisei). This brutal ceremony saw each first born set of twins pit up against each other in fatalistic combat, because of these harsh conditions, members of the clan infamously dubbed the Giyagan the Eye of Sacrifice (目の犠牲, Me no Gisei). This ceremony’s tradition would carry over until shortly after Naruto Uzumaki's reign as Seventh Hokage.

Present Day, Boruto Era

Over sixteen years after the events of the Fourth Shinobi World War, Chikara Kōboku was now a fully realized doctor and biologist in the fields of cellular and genetic biology, he campaigned along with other scientists to no longer have sets of twins fight each to the death. Due to the capabilities of the clan’s secondary kekkei genkai Fuyo-no-Kami, Chikara would be able to use his DNA to create laboratory grown eyes who seemingly already had the Giyagan unlocked. He then presented his experiments to his father, Hyosuke Kōboku, who was the current head of the clan as well as the Hishōkage (飛翔影, Lit Meaning: Soaring Shadow). Chikara passionately reassured his father that these changes were necessary, that the Kōboku Clan no longer needed to rely on old barbaric traditions in order to attain their genetic birth right. Lord Hyosuke eventually passed a law deeming the Trial of Sacrifice forbidden, instead various shinobi of all ages now had the option to undergo the transplant surgery to receive the Giyagan.

Abilities

Acute visual prowess is one of the major highlights of this dōjutsu, similar to the Byakugan, its vision can penetrate through any solid object or chakra based obstruction. It remains unaffected by blinding interferences such as smoke or mist, although it’s possible to throw something like dirt in the user’s eyes to catch them off guard. Certain barriers and chakra cloaking seals may slightly distort the Giyagan’s vision. Users are even able to see on a cellular level. The Giyagan is said to be able to see chakra much more acutely than what’s been shown capable in both the Sharingan and Byakugan, although it is unable to see the chakra pathway system. Taking it a step further, the user is able to discern each of the seven basic nature transformations through specific colors: a dark brown for Earth Release, red for Fire Release, yellow for Lightning Release, dark blue for Water Release, seafoam green for Wind Release, whitish yellow for Yang Release and blackish purple for Yin Release. Their acute vision even allows them to break down the required nature releases that make up various combination nature transformations.

Unlike the Byakugan, the Giyagan is able to discern virtually any type of shadow clone from its original caster except clones made using the Limbo: Border Jail. This dōjutsu has the ability to dispel or decipher whether or not genjutsu is being used on either themselves or others through detecting irregularities in a person’s chakra flow. It is important to note that the Giyagan grants its user full immunity to visual based genjutsu with Kotoamatsukami and the Infinite Tsukuyomi being the exceptions. The Giyagan itself has the potential to cast visual genjutsu, although it’s not commonly seen utilized. A skilled user of this dōjutsu is capable of utilizing the Giyagan’s control over the various tenketsu that surrounds the user’s eyes. Lastly, users are able to take their innate ability to sense the emotions of others by using their eyes as conduits to induce or manipulate the emotions of others through eye contact. Overuse of this dōjutsu can cause blurry vision and/or crippling headaches and in worse cases, emotionally induced comas.
