This forbidden technique was employed by Hamura Ōtsutsuki to bind the power of the shinju within his twin brother Hagoromo, at the cost of his own life.

Origin[]

Hamura Ōtsutsuki developed this technique from a lifetime of experimentation with the meaning of sound, word, and reality. His exploration of the mystical mantras allowed him to attain transcendent wisdom, earning him the moniker "The Sage of the Mind".

As the inventor of written manta, he was consequently also the inventor the alphabet of fūinjutsu. The knowledge of fūinjutsu is an integral part in the creation of any contract or seal, and also heavily influenced the development of the hand seals for the performance of Ninshū. The 27 Shuku Masks of the Uzumaki Shrine are a product of his studies; each represents a phase of the moon, an aspect of his personality, and each confers a unique power or condition to its wearer. The process of binding fragments of himself through a contract seal allowed Hamura to create the masks, and this experimentation later became the foundation for his final act.

As Hamura and Hagoromo were on the precipice of defeat in their battle against Kaguya and the Shinju, Hamura committed a sacrifice to save his brother and humanity. Using his knowledge of sealing, he bound up all of his nature into Jinchūgishiki. His pact and aim was to bind the power of the Shinju entirely. Sadly the scales were not balanced in his favor. The life force and power of the Shinju and his mother were so much greater than his own that this act stripped him of all of his life force and spirit. Still more horrifyingly his existence became bound to the life-force of the shinju, and consequently all life that originates from it. A horrifying specter personifying death itself, the shinigami is cursed with an insatiable hunger and relentless desire to consume the chakra of the living. So long as there is life, there is death.

The masks and writings of Hamura later became the inspiration for the Dead Demon Consuming Seal, a technique developed by the Uzumaki clan (his descendants).
