Kōsei (更生, Kōsei) is a former nomad and now a highly-regarded Tokujō of Sunagakure. Despite barely in his adulthood, Kōsei has become widely known as "Suna no Shugami" (砂の手神 God-hand of Sand) for his indiscriminately pacifistic nindō to cure any injure or sick no matter their origin. His past remains a mystery even to himself, unaware that he’s the protégé of Kabuto Yakushi, who is also his acting guardian. Because of Kabuto’s actions to save his life, he is the last child of a family from the Land of Demons and the only one of his kind.

The Kazekage and him have known one another since Kōsei was a little boy. He met the Kage after losing his nomad family to a group of raiders, who learnt of his unique set of gifts and sought to abduct him from them. But instead his family died unarmed against the onslaught as they protected him with their life. With this awareness, and watching his growth and reputation grow, the Kazekage foresaw more of such attacks to happen if the boy was left alone. By selecting Kōsei as one of their bodyguards, the village leader could silently watch over him and a way for the former to move a bit more free around as they travel together. He operates under the name “Hagara” (羽柄, Hagara; literally meaning “Feathers”).

In the end, Kōsei wishing to travel around the world caused him to get in conflict with the interest of the Kazekage. And even when becoming a rebel against his parent figure, they continued to deny his request, stating that his naïvety would be his death. No bargain became fruitful. Until the Kage finally caved into his demand, but only if Kōsei accepts a few of their terms: he must travel with preselected bodyguards by the Kazekage and return to the village immediately when summoned back. Even if it’s not completely alone, the young medical-nin could finally set foot into the world and explore all the different cultures it has to offer.
