Kai Kuromatsu is a Jōnin of Ishigakure and leader of The Design Corps of Ishigakure (Sekkei Butai, 設計部隊, ).
Background[]
Kai was born into the Kuromatsu Clan's colony at Ishigakure, but his early life was marked by limitation. Blind from birth, he was sheltered by overprotective parents who viewed his condition as a weakness. They forbade him from engaging in rigorous activities, believing he was too fragile to survive in the harsh world of shinobi. His peers, on the other hand, were far crueler. They mocked him, calling him someone who could never truly understand the battlefield. They accused him of being a liability, claiming that he would never be more than dead weight in a fight.
Kai learns to "see" through vibrations in the earth.
Daitan Futeki, the leader of Ishigakure at that time, did not dismiss him at first glance. Most were blind to Kai’s abilities, yet the seasoned warrior recognized something remarkable in him. He helped him learn to listen carefully to the vibrations of the earth, feeling the way structures resonated when people moved around them. Daitan challenged him, exposing him to the complex art of architecture, strategy, and combat. Kai quickly proved that his blindness was not a hindrance but a gateway to a new kind of perception. With his remaining senses heightened and sharpened under rigorous training, Kai developed an extraordinary ability to "see" through vibrations in the earth.
Kai as a Chunin
Under Daitan’s guidance, Kai became an elite user of Earth Release. Kai could manipulate the battlefield itself, transforming solid terrain into a shifting maze designed to distort his enemies' sense of direction and control. Though Kai was initially hesitant to fight, he learned that true strength was not about overpowering opponents but controlling the battlefield itself. Like Daitan, he embraced a philosophy of precision and intellect, proving that sheer power meant nothing if one's surroundings dictated the fight.
After his death, he viewed Daitan not just as a mentor but as the first person who believed in his potential. He understood now that strength did not come from physical prowess alone—but from knowledge, adaptability, and control. Kai wanted to live up to his master's expectations. Kai rose to prominence as the leader of Ishigakure’s Design Corps, using his intellect and strategic mind to defend his village. Even in death, Daitan’s teachings continued to guide him.

Kai is highly analytical and patient, preferring strategy over brute force. He is meticulous, always studying the battlefield before engaging, and he is rather calm in stressful situations.

Full Appearance
Kai is always barefoot, preferring direct contact with the earth to enhance his awareness of vibrations and terrain shifts. He wears the standard Ishigakure outfit of dark brown uniforms layered with flak jacket in various shades of brown and beige. The upper half of his face and right eye is completely wrapped in bandages and his forehead protector is drawn all the way over left eye.

Earth Release
Kai has advanced prowess in Earth Release. With Mutability he is able transform his surrounding terrain it into a maze to throw off his opponent's perception and likewise attack with. After the rock is summoned, Kai can control the rock by changing his picture, allowing him to insert traps using his diagram scroll. Its size and complex patterns can disorient opponents, and the user can take advantage and attack from blindspots.

Kai is a very adept tactician. He studies topography before missions, memorizing terrain. His ability to create highly detailed, chakra-infused maps is the foundation of his strength. He can quickly analyze landscapes, anticipate enemy movements, and alter the battlefield in real-time. This allows him to create deadly traps, escape routes, and kill zones before his enemies even realize they’ve been lured in.
Coal Release[]
Kai is able to Coal Release. Coal Release is an advance kekkei tōta that combines Earth Release, Fire Release, and Yin Release that allows the members of Kuromatsu Clan to dominate and create coal any kind of burning or land. The users can shape coal and create powerful techniques with this fossil that can be combined to fire.
Sensory Perception[]
Kai can sense chakra through the ground
Kai has a great sensory perception, able to detect changes in another person's chakra. By touching the ground with his feet, Kai can send out seismic pulses to detect those around him, allowing him to sense approaching enemies or hidden tunnels. This makes him incredibly difficult to ambush.
