"Hey, you there. Yeah, you. Don't ya even think about blinkin' once in that great abyss you call a head. Hey! I'm serious y'know. I want you to keep your big ol' eyes wide open. Got it? Great. 'Cause I'm about to surpass the limits which I never had!"
— Kaminari Kyoushi

Kaminari Kyoushi (教師雷, Kyoushi Kaminari) is a rōnin and a former apprentice samurai originating from Kusagare City (草枯れ市, Kusagare Shi, lit. meaning: Fall City) located within the remote Land of Sunrise, a distant island that has existed for many centuries isolated from the rest of the outside world. It is a place that many archeologists and explorers refer to as the Unseen Paradise, this is due its unusual climate of constant thunderstorms and tsunamis that encircle the island and yet cower from its center, creating an isolated ecosystem untouched and unseen by those on the outer reaches of this border. It is for this reason that the land continues elude and baffle the public at large. Although at some point after his defection he earned the name of Walking Building Block Corpse (散策積み木屍, Sansaku Tsumiki Shikabane) something that caught on because of his unique physiology that lets him detach and reattach any of his limbs on a whim without decay or any of their functions ceasing, a feat that has earned him much respect and ridicule across many lands as others question the authenticity of such an absurd statement. He, as a samurai of this era, is thought to be an oddity among men as he is not a product of the shinobi but that of samurai from a forgotten land. After fleeing from his home together with his father at a young age the two drifted from land to land before deciding to settle down in the Hidden Fern. Although he was not of that land he was still chosen to be the fourth inheritor of the title Shidakage without hesitation, with the decision getting the green light from the upper echelon of the land together with the blessings of the General. A historic moment indeed. Within the long history of the land never was there one, among his forefathers, the past lords or anyone that came before him for that matter he was the first one to transfer leadership over their military capital to a man who was not of their noble classes and a foreigner at that. He is also one of the last remaining members of the ancient House Yamada, a group of people who were purged from the face of the earth by order of the high council of Hashira as a sort of security measure against their, the Thunderstorm Release, something that is thought to be one of the more nefarious powers to be manifest within their inner circle. The power to control the climate around their island. A gift from the gods. On the night it happened his mother was out on an assignment to the mainland, as she had failed to answer the call to return home and thus she had narrowly escaped the cruel fate the rest of her clansmen had met along with her elder brother and a handful of her cousins. Upon their return they were met with the bewildered faces of the high council who when questioned about what had happened responded that the rest clansmen had slain one another three nights before their return home. Distraught her remaining clansmen opted to commit suicide than to live on knowing what had supposedly let happen to the rest of their brethren. Before his mother could succumb to despair the high council was encouraged to see past their flawed thinking and into the future, as without at least one member of the royal family the storm surrounding the island would cease.

Long before his birth his mother, as a her way of paying her debt to her deceased brethren, became involved in a government ploy to create a soldier that would be able to piece and heal itself no matter the injury. A matter of national security. As the high council wished for the rest of the world to share in their wealth and prosperity through colonisation but recognising that their military forces weren't quite enough there yet. And to supplement for this they employed a number of scientists and had begun work on a project whose aim was to produce a Walker (歩行者, Hokousha), the samurai class of those belonging to their militia, who could not be cut down in combat and would continue to fight until their last breath was drawn. Many of the men and women working on this found this to be quite inhuman but with the influence the council had it wouldn't be difficult to replace any one of them with a snap of a finger and with amount money put on the table many of the scientists became complacent to such things. After months and months of producing failed test subjects and hitting dead ends one after another the lead researchers made a discovery that would change the course of the entire experiment; younger test subjects' were more responsive to the drugs and body modifications deployed in the project. Although hesitant at first the council signed off on the order and brought in a number of orphans from the outer reaches of the island as to not draw in any unwanted attention. Just as the lead scientist had theorised the children responded far better than their older counterparts, resulting in far less deaths as many of the test subjects began to manifest the results of the experiments within their bodies. Others gained simple strength enhancement, others speed enhancement and others awakened strange dōjutsu but none of them seemed to inherit the power that they had sought to pass down unto them. Deeming the project as not a complete failure the high council decided to use the child soldiers within their military while reassigning the research team to another one of their projects. Refusing to give up just yet his mother stole one of the serums and injected it into her unborn child, hoping that he would be able one to bear the fruits of their labour. Unfortunately though his mother would not be there to see that's upon birth Kaminari showed no such signs and was labeled as a failure without further analysis, it would not be until after his defection that he would come to realise his mother's last gift to him. This serum came into effect after being awakened the outside interference of the "Shiro", an international criminal wanted for the release of the Kijo. An ancient creature that plagued the mountainscape for centuries. The figure had modified his body in a bid to materialise their dreams and desires into the physical realm.

Their dreams to pass on their essence that is, you see the body modifications conducted on the teen were not without meaning or purpose, the modifications alongside the unintended progression of his Rokurokubi Technique (ろくろ首術, Rokurokubi Jutsu) were meant to brace his body for the strain which would be put on it by the transference of a Kāma. Despite being unsure of the actual nature of the mark and the power it stored his step mother, the Third Shidakage, knew one thing; that the mark had to be connected to the priests at the Three Wolves Shrine (三狼堂, Sanrō Dou). The same place that the "Shiro" first emerged and the same place that the ancient evil, that is the Kijo, was sealed within. To seal such a thing into a mere bell one would require one to be quite knowledge in the field of fūinjutsu formulae. Something that many of the priests at the temple dabbled in and others majored in it but there was one thing that was for certain. That the answers they sought were hidden within the shrine walls. Needing something to distract the teen from investigating the matter any further she promoted him on a whim, paired him up with a former rōnin girl and sent the two off on a number of missions. She had hoped that this would be enough for him to lose interest in the subject and force him to pursue other things such as love. The two bonded with one another over the course of several months, risking their lives for one another time and time again to save the other, having split a lightningbolt in twain with his bare hand alone to shield the girl from the danger during an assassination attempt on a mob boss in the middle of a foreign country. This earned him the title of Rai Taro (雷太郎, Rai Taro) after many of the people begun making rumours centered around him and the gods, going as far as to call him the son of the thunder god, Yakuza no Ikazuchi no Kami, due to his apparent immunity to the element. And as time went on Kaminari and the girl grew quite close and became involved romantically with one another, causing him to lose his interest in one matter and sparking his interest in another.

Later on in his life he would be offered the seat of Shidakage for his work on stopping another outbreak of war with the Land of Sacred Dreams after forcing their higher echelon into submission by assassinating their puppet rulers, the Eight Honorific Generals, and defeating 3 330 of their samurai using nothing but his knowledge of swordsmanship and his army of 1 000 puppet Yōkai in the short period of four days. His participation in this fight earned the moniker of Thousand-Armed Corpse Puppeteer (千手屍人形使い, Senju Shikabane Ningyoutsukai) for his . Although short his term came to be known as one of the Technological Era in his village as he implemented and removed numerous laws to support the development of the sciences as to not fall behind the other powers. Change was not easy but with his charisma and intelligence he was able to reach the hearts of even the strictest traditionalists, winning the crowd over with his innovations within both security and communications fields. Placing a network of watchtowers near the border of the land which emitted sensing barriers to keep a record of everyone who comes and goes out of the country, helping the country and its numerous businesses keep track of things far more efficiently, the people would go on to give him the title of All Seeing Shidakage (皆御覧歯朶影, Mina Goran Shidakage, lit meaning: All Seeing Fern Shadow). After a couple of years he would go on to become the Head of the Makejidamashii Myoō, passing his title back to his stepmother, after being recognised by the world council for his many accomplishments in his short time as the head of his village. The Makejidamashii Myoō as explained by the union is an organisation as old as time, whose origin could be dated all the way back to a time before the thousand year long era of the shinobi. Guarding the world at large from the shadows from the unseen, sparking his interest in the Kāma and its origins once more. Not long after his ascension to the title Kaminari was seduced by the Kijo into helping her commit a mass genocide on the right hand of the feudal lord, his family and the his royal court in one night. Although mere seduction would not be enough for him to go through with such a thing the Kijo figured that even a heart as innocent as his could be consumed by darkness if he was told just the right set of things. Being presented with evidence that suggested that the higher government had held secret meetings with the enemy rōnin to stage a coup d'etat to overthrow the land's leadership he flew into a blind rage and helped the Kijo inorder to prevent any more casualties.

Upon finding out what their child had done Yama was sent into a distraught state and was temporarily replaced with her right-hand man Nibai by orders of the feudal lord and labeled as a rōnin. Refusing to abandon the teen half of Makejidamashii Myoō and his girlfriend decided to flee the land together with him. Although his father recommended that the teen return home and explain himself with Kaminari countering that the feudal lord would probably be much too enraged to listen to reason though he did entrust his father with the documents containing the incrementing information. The group would then go on to travel through lands to help Kaminari find himself, sharpening his swordsmanship and puppeteering along the way whilst continuing to investigate the connection between the Kijo and the upper government, his research led to him back to where it all began. The Three Wolves Shrine. Raiding the temple the group found several documents recording the dealings between priests and higher echelon if the Land of Iron with the "Shiro", acknowledging that this threat ran deeper, much deeper, than they had originally thought. The shrine had a great deal of connections throughout the land and others. By releasing the seals they had placed on themselves to keep their chakra hidden the group let themselves be known to not only the priests but to the Anbu sent to locate them. Swarming the temple in a matter of hours the shrine the shrine's secret dealings became known and all those involved were either taken in for questioning or killed on site, Kaminari was granted a pardon and left to resume his term. Although his return sparked a debate among the higher ups none could argue that he was an asset that the village could not lose. And true to this, Kaminari continued to modernise the Hidden Fern and its kenjutsu, introducing his own set of kenjutsu techniques, one of which he purportedly used to split an entire mountain half and because of this he earned the epithet of Hand of God (手の神, Te no Kami).

History

Prologue: Beginning of Takashio Kendo Wars

Kaminari was born as a product of an arranged marriage between two noble families on a cold winters night on the 7th of December. He is the first and oldest child of councilman Uratarou Kyoushi, a great minister in his own right, and a beautiful noble women who went by the name of Shimi Yamada although a couple of months after their son's birth she was ordered to lead a large crusade against a neighbouring land, signalling the last time that she would see both her son and husband. However despite holding off on naming their son for traditional purposes she decided to name him after the thunder and destruction which would soon sweep the land due to their council's indecision and deception of their people. She wanted her son to some day make his voice heard, for it to be as loud as thunder, and for his actions to pierce into the stone hearts of the their people and leave his mark burnt unto their souls, similar to lightning. His father tried to counter the decision with an antithesis by appealing to high council of Hashira not to act on their impulses and instead use logic to deal with the problem but his concerns were simply brushed aside as nothing more than the mad ramblings of an ignorant man afraid of losing his soulmate. Unfortunately for the council what seemed to be the ramblings of a man drowning in grief were in truth a premonition of the near future. In the short period of three months their land suffered a great series of plagues swept through the land. These came as a direct result of their atrocious actions against their neighbouring country, after having orchestrated a coup d'etat within the land in a ploy to destabilize the land and its economy. Some found it ironic that it would be the same person that the councilmen had hired to carry out their murders would be the same one to hold guillotine of death and reap their lives, while others saw it as an act of karma. Those who remained sought to rectify their past misdeeds and called for a ceasefire however the enemy forces refused to accept the truce, embittered by the long war chose to continue on their warpath and lay waste to the rest of the land instead.

Their conquest did not end at just decimating the land and inhabitants instead it continued on into the rest of their neighbouring countries, some were allies, others were enemies, but one thing was for certain. No one was to be spared from their wrath. The Land of Sunset had gone made with grief, threatening to destroy their entire way of life as they knew it. And unfortunately for Uratarou that is the era that his son was born into. A war torn country on the brink of collapse. Because at the time the high council had made it a mandatory law that all children, male and female, must learn Takashio Kendo (高潮剣道, Takashio Kendo, lit. meaning: Way of the High Tide Sword), the signature sword style of their country, from the noblemen at Tengoku Castle and be inducted into the military the moment they are able to fulfil their coming of age ritual. The legal age of what was considered was to be an adult around this time was 10. However under normal circumstances the council would forbid anyone not of royal or noble blood to enter their doors, but with the ongoing war the remaining councilmen were forced to break ancient taboo and let commoners into the castle. You see, the tension and discontent of the people within the Land of Sunrise had reached an all-time high, threatening to digress into a conflict among their own and having heard rumours of a supposed coup, Uratarou suggested that they fudge some of their past rules and let commoners inside their domain. Although hesitant at first the council decided to do just that to ensure that those who were forced into militia were at least compensated for their effort. As a bonus, Hashira shared their secret stash of chakra fruit from their personal Shinjū which they had treated with radiation from a fallen star while it was still a seedling, causing it undergo a mutation that led it to produce star chakra fruit instead of the normal batch. This is something which many of their predecessors would have been against, as not only had they gone against their traditions but they had also tainted their last gift from the Guardian with foreign bodies. His father, despite being a councilman himself, he didn't necessarily understand why they had gone as far as to grant them chakra. Perhaps they feared that without the public's support they would remain the defeated and be recorded in history as nothing more than a group of persists traditionalists refusing admit a loss on the losing side of pointless war. The tradition that the council had tried so hard to protect had become their downfall.

His father feared for the safety of his son but continued to remain strong in hopes that Shimi would some day return from her trip abroad. Although somewhere deep in his heart he knew that there was a chance that Shimi may not be returning any time in the near future. To escalate matters worse, his son had been ordered to attend the mandatory Takashio Kendo lessons at Tengoku Castle, the same place he himself worked. Forced to watch his son being subjected to such hardship saddened him and knowing that he could not do anything to help, he made a promise to himself one where he would continue to cheer him on with the same smile that Shimi once had, no matter the circumstances. It pained him on the inside, knowing that his son would someday go down the same path as his Shimi. His son, Kaminari, began to show significant signs of growth in the art of Takashiokendo under the guidance of his kenjutsu master, Ryuken, and the praise of his estranged father. A surprising thing on his father's part, had always thought of his father as nothing more than a retainer, and as such Kaminari was treated as nothing no more than someone his father had to safeguard. For the first time in a long time he felt that the bond he shared with his father transcended any carnal bond he had felt before. Something refreshing. The bond that a father shares Running out of both time and options his father decided to run away with his son to a distant land, far far away from their war torn country and to fresh beginnings in the outside world. His father tried to secure safe passage for both him and his son, Kaminari, however before he could finalise the remaining documents his son had his 10th birthday, signalling the age for mandatory militia recruitment. His father tried to delay his son's recruitment but due to political pressure from the other councilmen his son was forced to enlist into the military at the ripe age of 12. His father was distraught at the thought of sending his son to the front lines but to the boy in question, Kaminari, there was no greater honor. He had dreamt about that moment for years. After all he had heard only tales of his mother fighting on the front lines for her precious family and her land, a product of homeland propaganda, during his late childhood and now he was finally about to join her in the struggle. A real honor.

His father tried to dissuade Kaminari from thinking of war as a joyous occasion and see it for what it truly was. Bitter conflict. He felt that his father's worries were as unjust as they were baseless. Despite knowing that this was his son's dearest wish Uratarou tried his hardest to eject him from the militia force. Although he had the knowledge that the Takashiokendo Enrolment Act applied to both the children of the common folk and those of councilmen. The act was made in such a way no single person or family, common or noble, the law was the law. No exceptions. Loathing the path that his son had chosen to follow and that he had not, his father decided to flee the country with Kaminari once and for all. Knowing that his son would never agree to such a thing, to abandon his homeland in order to secure his own safety, he hid the escape as nothing more than a trip abroad, promising to return right before his first big assignment. Despite being hesitant at first Kaminari eventually came around and agreed to go with father. To him there was nothing unusual about it with his father being the councilman in charge of foreign trade and relations these sort of things were pretty common, the trips overseas to go meet with foreign dignitaries and late night outs that is. And once the two landed on the mainland his father met up with the ambassador of a samurai country, the Land of Iron, and arranged for asylum within Shidagakure, a place where his son could continue training as an apprentice samurai. His father recognised that he had done the worst thing that a parent could do; deciding his son's future for him. His son would surely despise him upon learning of the truth but as long as he knew that his son would be safe. He knew he couldn't stop his son from pursuing his dream but he could at least make sure that his son didn't get mixed up in their pointless conflict. Little did he know that his son's interest was something more than just a simple interest in kenjutsu, it was a way of connecting with his long lost mother. By saving him his father had also crushed any hope of Kaminari reuniting with his mother on the battlefield and fight right alongside her. Upon learning the truth he grew to despise his father from the depths of his soul and worse, he felt despair. Despair at knowing that there was no returning to their old life.

First Chapter: Life in the City

After just going into his teenage years Kaminari, although still spiteful, begun to adjust to his new life in Shidagakure and, despite his father's pleas for him not, also begun to showcase an innate talent for making friends easily which led to his worrywart father adopting the idea that he could never be a shinobi. His belief about the world at large, that combined with a bit of data gathering ranging from people's opinions to statements said by other politicians, led him to the common understanding that the true essence of a shinobi was not their heart instead it was theory ability to discard their hearts when needed that made someone truly special. His father felt that his son, Kaminari, was an utter failure in this regard, with such a big heart, it would be easier for an enemy combatant to string him along with a web of lies and land the finishing blow on him regardless of his personal strength. His son was simply too emotional to be considered a true shinobi in his eyes, but in his son's these were precisely the qualities that the many others admired and sought strength from. Despite being at odds with each other 99% of the time, his father knew that being a shinobi was the closest thing Kaminari could get to being a Watcher. Although hesitant at first his father made a bet with him; if he could travel to and from the Three Wolves within a timeframe of three days he was free to become a shinobi but if he failed he'd have to quit trying to become one and settle for learning kenjutsu for the sole purpose of being a recreational sport. Kaminari had grown used to these kinds of antics from his father but he did not think that his father would go as far to wager something of such great importance to him. Sure, for any normal person travelling to the Three Wolves (三狼, Sanrō) from south end of the land within three days but for Kaminari this was nothing more than simple child's play after all he had once crossed a larger distance on his way to the north end border to deliver some important documents to his father, that he had left behind in the same amount of time, there was something wrong. His father knew something that he didn't. There was to be a storm on the second day of the trip, that his close friend Yama Chibana, the inheritor of the Third Shidakage seat, predicted using her astute sensing alongside her Storm Release, and his father hoped that it would be enough to end his journey prematurely. And he was right. Kaminari failed to finish up the task he was given, thus his journey to shinobi hood had come to a close before he had a chance to even start. This caused him much heartache, after all this was only the fourth time in life that his father had forbade him from doing something close to his heart. First, he tried to stop Kaminari from becoming a Watcher then tried to get him discharged from the force, something that he had been preparing for since the day he could walk on his own two feet. Forced him to flee the land that he had sworn to protect and, he had done the worst thing imaginable in his mind, his father had taken away his one chance to meet his birth mother. Now, the selfish bastard, he called him, wanted to take away his last sambal of hope he had to become any sort of protector to anyone. He had had enough of his father's nagging. Enough was enough.

Fed up with being hauled up in a cave, cold and alone, and with nothing to eat, having lost his food rations while trying to find some decent shelter against the storm, Kaminari decided to push past the danger. Feeling his sea of sadness reaching its tipping point and his immense anger steadily brewing in the core of his soul, his bloodline limit thought it was about time that it showed itself. Manifesting in the form of an ancient nature release thought to have once been purged from the earth by the high council of Hashira, the Thunder Release, a forgotten bloodline trait belonging to the Yamada Family. The family whose name his mother once held. A people of miraculous strength and political power, they were rumoured to once have been a family of lowly mercenaries who fought their way up the food chain, travelled to the underworld and back, and were in the end recognised for their efforts and granted noble status. Feats which were all accomplished through their kekkei mōra that manifests itself once in a generation. Something that grants its holder dominance over the element of lightning including electromagnetic storms, thunderclouds and the element of lightning, in all its unrestricted glory. The stress put on his body by the awakening of this dormant cell and the rapid transmutation of his bodily structure caused him to scream out in pain. His cry resonated with the storm as if it heard his plea and was trying to assert its place in the world. But the more he cried, the worse the storm became. Trees were torn from were they stood, the animals were scared half to death by the loud thunder, lightning bolts lit up the heavens, it was pandemonium out of here. Unrelenting, Kaminari continued to assert his dominance against his natural counterpart, he would not be silenced, his voice would be heard. Just as his mother once wanted. He would fulfil his namesake, his mother's last gift to him. He could not fail.

Seeing that the mild snowstorm that Yama had forecast had begun to steadily grow in intensity, far more than what his friend had measured before, figuring that sitting idly by while his son was trapped in the middle of storm as counterproductive. Rushing out of the town with a small search and rescue team, Yama had advised against it but nonetheless ordered her men to accompany Uratarou on her good word, although she did so rather sparingly. As far as Yama was concerned it was nothing more than a suicide run but bound by her past friendship with the man decided to do him that little solid and toss him a bone. His father and the search team left at the end of the third day. The fierce storm continued into the fourth day growing worse by the hour, the search team and his father searched high and low for Kaminari but just couldn't seem to find him, no matter where they searched. Although his father refused to accept the loss of his cherished son and urges them to go on, the team leader protested and said that it might be in their best interest to rest for the night and continue their search in the morning. His father tried to persuade them on the notion that his son may die of frostbite if they don't find him on time but his entire argument was put to rest by a single flash of lightning. His father laughed at his statement. What could a stranger possibly know anything about what's best for him, much less his son. The man knew not of the sacrifices that he had to make to protect his son. He had left his comfortable life as the Councilman of Trade and Foreign Relations for a chance to raise his son in a peaceful land, away from the war, famine and disease that plagued their once utopian society. He had left any chance of seeing his wife again, leaving his son without any sort of mother figure and at the same time earning his resentment. All for his son. Overwhelmed with concern Uratarou went against his orders and went out searching for Kaminari in the middle of such a storm. The others thought of him as being insane while the leader thought it a courageous thing to do.

Once the storm had cleared the rescue team went ahead and continued their search for Kaminari. The main reason that had not found him in the first place was because of the storm and with that out of the way locating Kaminari was no more that a simple maths equation. Something they could find the answer without thinking any further. Although to their surprise they found that his father had found him already and that the boy himself was the reason for the storm calmed down. Upon returning to Shidagakure his father was ordered to report to Yama's office while Kaminari was sent to rest at the Shida Private Hospital (羊歯民間病院, Shida Minkan Byōin, lit. meaning: Fern Private Hospital). At the debriefing Yama admitted to staging the entire thing as a way of testing Kaminari and his determination, earning much anger from Uratarou. Angered that after all this time they were still not thought of as being part of the village, Uratarou tried to lash out against her but was immediately reprimanded by Yama's right hand man, Nibai Nara, a man who held Yama and his family in high regard. He and his family owed the Shidakage's family a great debt of gratitude. You see, Niban's mother was a deserter from the Nara Clan who had abandoned her friends and family to be with his father, a noble samurai from Shidagakure. Blinded by love said not think ahead and was imprisoned upon her arrival as the Hidden Leaf had registered her as a missing-nin. Their General had ordered the village to pass judgement upon her as the former had no authority within their land. Many people within their village opted for her incarceration to avoid the ridicule and antagonization of their larger counterparts but the Shidakage at the time, Kiyome Chibana, saw the chance to recruit some fresh blood into the village and to reunite in the the two lovers. To this end, she opted to grant the Nara deserter asylum within Shidagakure, where she eventually gave birth to Nibai. Uratarou knew that story all too well, after all the incident happened during one of his and his late father's trips to the mainland to discuss their illegal use of the Land of Sunrise's trade routes and the tariff fees they planned to enforce. It was during one such instance that he met and befriended a young Yama but of course that was his last trip to the mainland before the outbreak of the Takashio Kendo War (高潮剣道戦, Takashio Kendo Ikusa, lit. meaning: Way of the High Tide Sword), marking the last time he would see Yama.

Snapping out of his daydream Uratarou, seeing that the argument was heading nowhere, decided to change the topic and questioned Yama if she orchestrated the entire storm just to see if he had inherited the Thunder Release, after all that is the sole bit of information about the Land of Sunrise that he divulged to his friend. Confirming that this was just one of the reasons Yama begun to stroll around her desk as her right hand, Nibai, shifted to the side to make room for him. Asking Uratarou if he thought that she, the Shidakage, wouldn't be able to see past such an obvious lie. But before he could question what the man meant, Yama threw another question his way. One that touched a bit home. He asked if everyone within the Land of Sunrise had such potent and malleable chakra, as he had seen a great many of chakra, in and outside the village, and yet she had never run across one as "glamorous" as this, as he put it. However before she could finish questioning the man he got up and begun heading towards the door, but not before explaining what the man had seen earlier. He first went on to dismiss Yama's earlier assumption, explaining that only the elite and soldiers are permitted to use chakra and that in his land you must be chosen to inherit it, and second that the "chakra" he had felt within his son was in fact a result of their research. Although he admitted that he was not the councilman in charge of Science and Technology, he added that he had heard the this research was based on the Mysterious Peacock Method and the chakra fruit harvested from the Sacred Tree (霊木, Reiboku). Yama was lost for words. She had known that she and Uratarou were close but never did she think that he would blabber state secrets to someone who he had not seen for years so openly, or was this because of something else? His son maybe? Whatever the case was Yama had just stumbled across a disturbing secret which was a great cause of concern for the Shinobi Union, as the Land of Sunrise was a part of the minority of lands that had chosen not to align themselves with the union. However before she could thank him, Uratarou interrupted her and told her that in exchange for this bit of information and more Yama had to agree to enrol his son at the academy. Something that the former laughed off as a joke, angering Uratarou, but not before explaining herself and the institute was open to anyone living within the village, meaning that Kaminari was free to enter the moment he arrived. The only thing holding Kaminari back from becoming a shinobi was his own father. His father was absolutely stunned by this statement but knew it to be true. After all he was the sole reason his son had to give up the things he once loved and he was sick of it. Realising that he had been nothing more that a brick wall impeding his son's path Uratarou decided to do something that he had never done before; let Kaminari be a boy and enjoy the rest of his childhood.

Upon entering the Shida Ninja Academy (羊歯忍者学校, Shida Ninja Gakkō, lit. meaning: Fern Ninja Academy) Kaminari proved to be a rather slow learner, having been used to the personalised training methods of the noblemen at Tengoku Castle. Unlike the nobles the teachers at the academy were not so hospitable, paying less attention to him as a person and more to the class as a group, handing him tasks to do without recording his progress and offering no pointers on how to improve whatsoever. For Kaminari this was a drastic change in teaching methods which he could not adjust to despite going to additional classes, finding it hard to adjust to the curriculum, the language and the idea of learning Ninjutsu. As, despite gaining the will to mould and use chakra, the majority of the things that he learned at Tengoku were kendo based, Ninjutsu was not something that came naturally to him. However his talent of making friends together with his incredible tenacity shone through when needed them most, the first time was when Kaminari quickly became friends with some of his friends and met up with some of his old ones, and second being when his friends found out that he was failing the semester and decided to help. Despite showing prodigious talent in both the art of kendo and his more practical subjects such as mathematics and science, Kaminari continued to struggle in the field of Ninjutsu. His friends, upon hearing of this, empathised with him and encouraged him to step outside his comfort zone so as to embrace their culture as his own. Promising that he would not be alone on his journey, each one promised to dedicate their after school time to learning the art of Takashiokendo from Kaminari as a way sharing his pain. The group continued this training regime for months as they continued to sharpen their combat skills as the people they were as opposed to training as a singular whole. And as it turns out this sort of training substituted for the role that their teachers just couldn't, being friends, the group could touch upon the same subjects that their teachers wouldn't without hesitation nor fear. Hosting a sort of after school fight club to gauge the others' strength and offer support where needed. This competition came to be known as a sort of after school class for those students who weren't coping but in truth it was an open event where everybody was welcomed. And in the end of it with the support of his friends and father he managed to overcome the obstacles that once impeded his path and rose to the position of No. 1 student in both subject fields, academic and physical, at Shida Ninja Academy. Earning the respect of those who had once labeled him as a failure, from students and teachers alike, they had all changed their attitudes towards the boy. He had in a few months, gone from being a nobody to somebody.

Kaminari graduated from the institution at the ripe age of 13 after joining half a year prior and yet he dared to stand on the same podium as those who had been there since the age of 6, those were the thoughts running through the minds of the parents present. Ridicule stained their faces however, regardless of how they felt, one thing was for certain; they could not just sit idly by and disregard the genius that is Kaminari. Despite his promotion to genin class being rather recent the teenager had become a master of Kenjutsu and somehow managed to procure himself three nature releases while in the academy, one being an ancient relic of the past the Thunder Release. This garnered the respect and admiration of the public, putting their long held fears to rest, although one person shone out shone the rest, in the form of a mysterious figure who had set their sights on him. Although Kaminari's genin career had a slow start things begun to pick up after the first week, as he and his team, although without a team leader, were tasked with investigating a chain of chain of murders near the Land of Iron's outermost border. A number of priests had supposedly been murdered near the Three Wolves Shrine (三狼堂, Sanrō Dou) a sacred monastery within the country that the samurai would come to visit before going into great battles. The Head Priest there suspected that the assailant was trying to gain entry into the forbidden chambers of the monastery where the Bell of a Thousand Sounds (ベルのせん, Beru no Sen Monooto) was said to reside. And within those rooms was said lie a primordial beast that the 26th Head Priest had sealed away, he being the 41st was not going to be the one to break this cycle so he hired Shidagakure to do a bit of recon into the matter. The Shidakage laid it out and had prepared the travel arrangements for the three man team along with a mapped out route to the shrine. She had suspected that there was something that the priests weren't telling them so advised the genin to tread with care. The journey there according to Yama would take a minimum of two days if they went by train and fortunately for them she was not one hung on to the past as much, having arranged for them to travel with comfort. Upon arriving the four were met with much discontent as if the priests there thought that they were somehow responsible for the murders something which they would understand to be true, in a sense. As the simple recon mission they were sent there for quickly spun out of control and became an abduction attempt. The target? Kaminari Kyoushi. The Head Priest had sensed the presence of another person around that of the genin. An odd sensation. One that he had not felt before. Suspicious, he ordered the other shrine priests to be on high alert and told them to act natural until he could identify the source of the unusual chakra. And upon entering the Three Wolves Shrine and settling their guests in the rooms the priests had prepared, the Head Priest felt the foreign body disappear into thin air before reappearing inside the temple. A mysterious figure donned in a slim fitting pitchblack outfit worn together with a white scarf alongside a white oni mask decorated with a pair of reddened eyes stood in the middle of the main hallway. They had at long last chosen to make themselves known to the temple. Rushing past a number of doors and hallways on his way to forbidden chambers just as the Head Priest had predicted but one thing that he didn't account for was his fascination with Kaminari, stopping right outside his room. And it was at this moment that the Head Priest realised that the figure had another reason for delaying his plans, he had planned to not only steal the contents of the forbidden chambers but Kaminari himself. Although there was something the priest didn't know, the boy had readied himself before time upon sensing his killing intent in the hallway and had formed an Autumn Crisp Lightning Prison around the door and walls. But he found himself surprised when the figure simply shattered the jutsu as if it was nothing, ignoring the electrocution and paralysis brought upon by it entirely. Kaminari was shocked at first but admitted that he didn't think something like that was going to keep them out for long before throwing another jutsu, Autumn Bird Falling, seemingly on a whim that it would land which it didn't. With the figure simply stepping aside to avoid the jutsu before commenting on how lackluster of a performance that was, and how they hoped that the next act would be more challenging.

Mere moments after doing this Kaminari pulled out his katana and resorted to using a pairing of the Body Flicker and Kenjutsu although the style he used was unfamiliar to this land, the Takashiokendo style. He hoped that by outspeeding them he would be able to land a crippling blow without ever giving him the chance to do so. Before having the Autumn Bird Falling jutsu come back around as the earlier misfire was a calculated gamble which payed. He had hoped that the enemy would let down his guard upon seeing such a poor display of skill followed by a drastic rise in finesse they would focus their attention entirely on blocking his strikes, ignoring the backtracking lightning bird and being hit. And did it work like a charm. The attacker was engulfed in a bolt of lightning as it sent them crashing into the lower floors and they did the room burst into a ball of flames. But then the strangest thing happened; they stood with mere burns on their clothing and a smile painting the broken lower part of his mask before complimenting his fighting style. The mysterious figure continued to add insult to injury by pointing out the flaws in his stance while dodging each slash rather seemingly with no effort on his part and daunting him on his messy hair. However Kaminari didn't panic at the sight of their calm demeanor instead he laughed it off as arrogance before being corrected, being told by them that he was in fact the ignorant one. Before announcing that they had in fact raided the forbidden chambers months ago and broke the seal on the Bell of a Thousand Sounds, thus releasing the primordial demon out into the world. That was how he had interpreted their words at least before being corrected once again, being told that they had not freed the creature but instead subjugated it. However before he could ask them what they meant Kaminari was hit aside, sending him crashing out the window, landing just outside the temple though not without accumulating great injuries. Whatever had hit him had a ridiculous amount of strength at their disposal, and it was this same hooded fella who would go on to pick him up with them complimenting him on surviving the hit as most men had been broken by a mere touch from the demoness. Kaminari was shocked at this revelation not only was he alive on a mere miracle but the person holding him hostage was in fact a female demon. The figure also warned the Kijo to handle him with care referencing to his previous statement before adding that the last that either of them would want was his guts spilling out everywhere, yet, as they still needed the boy alive for the transference of the "marker". The Kijo let out a soft whimper upon hearing this so the masked figure corrected her and told her that, at the end of the day, no matter how deformed he turned out to being in her care as long as he was somewhat alive it was all good. After all at the end they could always just store Kaminari in the Temple of Dōjō-ji soak in the healing chakra of the healing chamber. As they said the Kijo's face instantly became warped as a wicked smile, spanning from one ear to the other, was painted on her face as she turned her head to the shoulder she was carrying Kaminari on and as her grip tightened the teen let out a loud desperate cry for help.

The Head Priest had sensed it earlier and sent for help but by the time he alerted his personal guards and Hidden Fern genin, the figure had already taken both of his intended targets. Angered at the loss of their fellow comrade, Kaminari's teammates, Dōjin Naikanboku and Kara, demanded to know what it was they were sent to the temple to guard. Knowing that if the assailant was allowed to escape not only would he have to risk angering the Shidakage for fidgeting with their mission summary but that of the daimyō for comprising their land's security by letting the contents of the chamber run amok outside, the Head Priest decided to let the genin in on a secret. That the contents contained within the chamber is not anything like gold or precious jewels but instead a large bell containing an ancient demon that had plagued the earth with its contaminating presence for a hundred years, spawning hordes of Yōkai in its steed, before being sealed away by the 15th Head Priest of the Three Wolves Shrine a millennial ago. Although he doubted the authenticity of such a tale he found it worth mentioning, as the priests of the shrine had been formed with the sole purpose of ensuring that the contents within the Bell of a Thousand Sounds stayed sealed, so it would be only reasonable to assume that the contents where less than to be desire. He also added that the seal placed on the forbidden chambers had begun to weaken in more recent times, creating pockets in space through which the chambers contents could escape through. Upon hearing this the teenager's friends Dōjin and Kara flew into a rage and threatened the Head Priest, questioning him on whether this was the case as if it was then why bother kidnapping Kaminari as he had nothing to do with this. Ignoring this the Head Priest went on to say that he was unsure of the reason but he had noticed that the boy was blessed with a rather special brand of chakra that may or may not be linked with the bell and its contents. His chakra had a sort of life giving quality about it, something which the demon fed on and judging from the immense amount the boy had he'd be able to substitute for at least a thousand people's worth of life force. Something which coming the High Priest, who himself was known through the lands for his tenacious and vibrant life force, was quite impressing. Telling the two that if he was right about this then there would be no telling how much stronger the enemy could make the creatures inside the Bell of a Thousand Sounds. And that was why it was imperative that they put a stop to this before it was too late. Although it was a bitter pill to swallow the Head Priest had to ask the genin for their help as they would need all the help they could get no matter how it insignificant it seemed. Hearing this Dōjin and Kara were more than determined to find Kaminari and the creature before they were able to cross the border. Knowing that if they did they would be acting outside of their jurisdiction and would lose protection of their village, Shidagakure. They had to get there fast.

Unbeknownst to the priests at the shrine and the genin, Yama had already been alerted of the growing danger by a recon team that had been sent there a several months ago and had dispatched an Anbu support team to the temple to monitor it. As the Third Shidakage she had a responsibility to her people and land to shield them from any dangers that may threaten their very way of life but with rumours about strange creatures seeping out of shadows and eating people floating about in the towns near the capital, it was no wonder why it had become much harder to do her job. This was a great cause of concern for her and the daimyō, and as such she decided to investigate the matter further. They couldn't afford to let such a rumour circulating through the public especially during the tourist season. People had come from far and wide to see their famous Three Wolves but with a rumour like this going around the place would lose out on billions in tourist revenue. Upon their return the first recon reported a strange chakra being presented near all the murder sites and sent it to the labs for testing. And after a while she begun sense the same aura surrounding Kaminari and his friends. She had noticed this lingering presence around the boy for quite some time and had suspected that it may have something to do with his star chakra but she had wished to observe the situation first before taking any drastic action. Suspecting that the enemy-nin was planning to use Kaminari as key to release the seal on the bear she came up with an idea, one that involved using the boy as bait to draw out the enemy by purposely sending him and his team out to the shrine. A high risk gamble with an equally high payout. And her plan had played out to perfection with Kaminari drawing out the perpetrator and unmasking the legend of the Kijo, giving the land a chance to put an end to the thousand year long terror the beast had embedded within the hearts of the people. With the stranger making themselves known, together their presumed trump card amount, they had given away their location by abducting Kaminari. Since the group didn't have the time to mask the boy's chakra signature locating the culprits and abductee was nothing more than child's play for the Anbu unit. And more so for the temple priests and his friends, as despite being mere priests their combat abilities lied to closer those of Chūnin and with more than 200 priests being mobilised.

As for Yama, on top of the Anbu she had dispatched earlier she had also sent her right hand, Nibai Nara, to assist in the culprits' arrest. Unfortunately for them, the mysterious figure and his cohort had spotted both parties approaching a while ago and set up several defenses to slow their movements. One of which was the Forest of an Uncertain Life, a large scale Yang Release jutsu that had the power to absorb the life force contained within a person, plant or animal and use that same life force to flood someone with so much energy that their body's would be crushed under the weight of their own strength and sometimes burst open if the power was a bit much for their body to handle. Upon running into this obstacle the Anbu shinobi were at a loss for words as they watched their members getting picked off one by one, with each of their jutsu, ranging from elaborate water constructs to simple paper bombs, proving to be rather ineffective against the sentient forest. Some even tried hacking away at the trees with swords and chakra-infused kunai but to no avail, the trees were simply to dense to be cut through with such meager tools. With one of the members proving to rather oblivious to this fact, hacking at while launching a great number of Great Fireballs at the murderous trees, hoping to cut them down and or burn them to the ground but before he could do so he fell prey to their life force inflating power before popping in the same fashion as a balloon. This left bits and pieces of him splattered all over the place. This angered the remaining Anbu, making them that much more determined to catch up with and arrest the assailant. And although the unit had a bit of trouble handling this jutsu, Nibai quickly found a work around it before the trees stuffed their bodies with a lethal dosage of life force. Nibai figured out that while the trees produced by the forest could drain or absorb a lethal amount of energy the trees couldn't absorb chakra as easily and therefore all they needed to do was launch another large scale jutsu to obliterate constructs. Rounding up the remaining Anbu, Nibai shared this bit of info and mustered up a Great Belch of Fire, a Fire Release jutsu of great range and strength, one that ensured the complete and utter incineration of anything caught within its blasting range. A force of great destruction, something that earned it the honour of being labeled as Kinjutsu. Everything from the trees, plant to the earth itself found itself scorched with either the colour black or hot red as a result of this. The assailant stayed behind to act as a spectator of the match as his cohort rushed towards the border with a barely alive Kaminari in hand, and once the spectacle had come to an end they leapt from the top of one of the scorched trees and sent the Anbu forces back with the sheer amount of wind produced by him landing, although Nibai stood his ground by linking his shadow with that of the surrounding debris. Something which the assailant found to be quite insulting. If one wished to survive in this world he would need to learn to stand on his own two feet and not cling to others as a way of getting stronger, this was their opinion. As the assailant continued to voice his own opinion Nibai stood there speechless, staring the figure as he tried make sense of what just happened. He didn't sense any sort of chakra being moulded within the assailant's body so it couldn't have been a wind-based jutsu that he just used then why? Why did he create such a large gust of wind appear upon their landing? Was that a mere demonstration of his power? Or simply the pressure caused by him landing? No, it had to be something else.

As Nibai tried understand what just the mysterious figure grew tired of simply watching their enemy stand there, doing nothing at all so they decided to close the gap between the two and send the former crashing through the earth and through the forest. As Nibai was sent back by at least 30 metres the mysterious figure voiced his disgust at his clinging on to the surrounding shadows and then to be sent out that same darkness nonetheless. Saying it was the same as clinging on to his friends to stop himself from falling and then to drag those same friends down with him upon his downfall. A pathetic display of human greed orbas they called it an "act of self preservation". The once stunned Anbu members got up shortly afterwards and ran at the figure, with their signature daisho blades in hand and pride on their unmasked faces, as they were about to prove them wrong. They were about to prove that what the masked figure was spouting earlier was nothing more than a bunch of baloney. The remaining Anbu manage to imprison him within the Four Violet Flame Formation, cornering him with their Kenjutsu after using series of swordplay techniques to distract the foe from the threat posed by their smaller sword of the daisho pair. Yama sent the Shidagakure Anbu to give chase to the masked figure due to their village being the sole one out to standardise the use of daisho among their Anbu for the use of the Dancing Reed (舞踊リード, Buyou Riido), a peculiar sword style that relied on rapid spinning and quick jabs at varying speeds from the user to catch the enemy off guard. Something which was instrumental in trapping the masked figure. And as for his cohort she was later apprehended near the border after a long drawn out chase by Dōjin, Kara and their priest escorts. The Kijo was no easy thing to handle and much less defeat but it had done the job it was sent out to do and thus it had no reason to hold on to Kaminari. Although she had developed a liking towards the teen she tossed him assigned and headed back towards the masked man's location, and of course Dōjin and Kara were not about to let her flee the scene, ordering some of the priests to set up a barrier to keep her from doing just that. And as the priests prepared to seal up the demon once more, it unleashed a loud cry which distorted the nearby space and tore open portals made from what were once mere ripples and pockets in space. These portals acted as gateways to the spiritual realm from which the Kijo could bring in hordes of Yōkai to separate, drop from high altitudes, tear them limb from limb and feast on their unsightly flesh or violate their body in the most twisted inhumane ways possible. Loud screams could be heard coming from the forest on that day as more than a hundred priests were slain in the most excruciating ways possible, with a mere 42 priests being the remains of the forces. And among these 42 priests, many of which were either missing either one or both their arms, legs, ears or some other organs, not a single one of them dared move a muscle in fear of being finished off by the Yōkai not even the hotheaded Hidden Fern genin one of which, namely Kara, had lost both his arms along with one kidney while Dōjin had had his eyes ripped from their sockets by one of the Yōkai. As much as she would have loved to mutilate their bodies' even further the Kijo had other matters to attend to such as freeing its subjugator from the fiery prison he was imprisoned within. Building up enough energy within her legs and generating a pair of bone wings one her back the Kijo flew from her location to that of the masked man in such a short amount of time that one could swear it was staged. By doing this the Kijo had built up the necessary amount of speed and power needed to break through the barrier, sending the jutsu casters crashing through the scorched earth, creating a menacing dust cloud along the way. A feat which left many of the onlookers speechless with the exclusion of one; Nibai Nara. And as an injured Nibai tethered himself to the shadow of the dust cloud, he theorised after taking a second look at the gust produced by this that it just be some kind of jutsu that doesn't use hand seals but one that uses minute by minute chakra manipulation to create powerful shockwaves by compressing their inner chakra into a small orb in order to create an immense pressure. As his other comrades moaned in pain Nibai stood up and asked him if this was the case, with the masked figure congratulating him on his insignificant discovery before having the Kijo blow a home right through his stomach. To prevent any further attempts at pursuit the masked figure triggered their other traps to go off before fleeing the area with the Kijo and some satisfaction at knowing that they had managed to transfer "it" into Kaminari thus making him into one of their eligible "vessels" (器, Utsuwa). And as he did this, trigger the other traps that is, forests of giant elongated spears sprouted from the ground and pierced through the flesh of anything caught within their range, killing much of the remaining priests. Before the forests could finish the job off more reinforcements arrived and extracted the genin team and the priest escorts, and after a period of three days they managed to exterminate the entirety of the murderous spear trees jutsu.

Kaminari was incapicitated for half a year after this incident, trapped within an induced medical coma and while in it he inside this he was plagued with dreams and memories of the figure that had abducted him not so long ago along with their sadistic Kijo partner. The same demented girl who had tortured him in some of the cruelest and inhumane ways possible, some of which left him in a near death state, this left deep emotional and mental scars embedded within his memories too. Although for those looking on from the outside world the torture may have gone on for what seemed to be mere minutes but for him the torture had lasted for at least a thousand years. Upon awakening Kaminari was met with the concerned faces of his friends and father. And on the Shidakage's orders he was to attend at least one therapy lesson per week together with his friends, as they to had not come to terms with the incident. But as it turns out his friends had far more time to heal, when compared to Kaminari. The amount of trauma inflicted upon him within that short period of time would go on to cause him much pain and suffering in the near future. Something that would send him into series of random fits and mental breakdowns, and as it would turn out it was during one of these fits that he would almost kill his father. A thing that sent him into a deeper spiral of depression and sadness, although he despised his father and felt much contempt for him not even he deserved to die. Despite this and a couple of suicide attempts his father continued to stay strong for both their sakes, bearing not an once of illwill towards Kaminari and instead tried to encourage him to get out of this slump. Although others chastised him on these near suicide attempts, Kaminari tried to ignore their opinions and continue on his path to self healing. However no matter how much he tried to supresses these unwanted visions the dreams and suicide attempts continued to get worse and worse. With the entire thing getting so bad that the Sealing Team had to be called in in order to suppress these foreign memories. It was an audacious process but in the end they managed to seal them up despite the pain filled testimonies of a hospitalised Kaminari. In the middle of the sealing the boy began spouting out a bunch of gibberish concerning someone by the name of "Anchin" searching for a lost fruit, no one found anything out of the ordinary while doing this, it was not until one of his memories caught within an entangled chakra web broadcasted through the rest. Sending a rather bone chilling thought through their minds or rather a single word which caused their hair to stand on end and induce uncontrollable muttering within some of them, the name of "Ōtsutsuki".

Upon sealing up the last of these memories the Head of the Sealing Team rushed to the Shidakage's office and reported the matter to her. Knowing that there was no way the boy could know of that name on his own, Yama sent for her friend Uratarou and despite her council urging her to contact the other kage to report the incident she decided that it would be in their best interests to keep the entire situation hush hush. As she and his father engaged in another one of their heated talks Kaminari was left in the care of the enigmatic Nibai. Someone who he had met only once and that was on his first day in the Hidden Fern, he appeared to be a quite and rather detached person but Kaminari could see right through this charade. Seeing him for what he was and that was shy young man trying his utmost hardest to fit the mould that was set for him. Although not much of a conversationalist Nibai did appear to have a certain knack for the game shogi, beating Kaminari at least 15 times in a row while waiting for his father's meeting to come to an end. Inside the boardroom Uratarou was questioned by the Shida Council and Yama on the origin of his son and this supposed "Sacred Tree" belonging to his land. The man answered each question with ease. Saying that his son was the result of a union between him and a noble woman belonging to House Yamada, said belong to one of the higher noble families within their land, and that he did not know much about the Sacred Tree besides that it was a gift from the island's founder. The Director of the Shida Private Hospital also filed his own independent reports on the changes that had begun to take place within Kaminari's body in the last 6 months and how an odd diamond-shaped seal had appeared on his right palm. Explaining that whatever the mysterious figure "Shiro", as he had come to be known, had done to the teenager's body was some of the finest body modifications he had seen so far, placing him among the likes of Orochimaru in this regard. A great cause for alarm among the council and the people but he also added that the modifications seemed to enhance his natural capabilities to such an extent that one could call him superhuman. Questioning why one would go through so much effort to abduct someone and then abandon them after modifying them. Assuming that "Shiro" must have done something to the boy that they aren't aware of he assigned a Anbu unit to monitor the boy for the time being and for him and his father to be put under protective custody until further notice. After the meeting concluded Kaminari was discharged from the hospital and sent home alongside his father, having been given mandatory leave so as to reduce the stress placed on his body by the shinobi lifestyle. Months passed as he stayed within the confines of Shidagakure, receiving private lessons from a number of jōnin living within the village, as a way of keeping up with the rapid development of his friends. Not wanting to be left behind Kaminari had his father hire these tutors to compensate for his lack of growth, since Yama had limited the missions he could go on in a month to three. It was during this time frame that he would come to realise something, that the seal on his arm would pulsate in the face of danger or rather whenever he used up more of chakra. To him it was a strange feeling but to his capturer it was one that marked maturation of their gift to the child. An Ōtsutsuki branding that was used as a way of transferring chakra to non-clansman. The Kāma.

Second Chapter: A Brewing Storm

About a year after this incident Yama Chibana, the Third Shidakage, and his father got quite close to each other, rekindling their old childhood romance and going out regularly on romantic night outs as opposed to his father's habit of going out for business. She came around the house more and more as the weeks went on, with Kaminari being unsure whether she had honestly come to see his father or to how he was doing after "that" incident, with all her nitpicking he could have sworn that she cared about him in the same way a mother for her child. This made him a bit uncomfortable at first but after a while he came to terms with it and came to take solace of a mother's love. Something that he had not felt since childhood. The empty hole in his heart was at last filled to the tipping point. She felt her share of guilt for letting the genin go out and using him as bait but this was a far as her worries would go, at the end of it all she was nothing more a noisy politician, lying and manipulation was part of her job description. But for some reason she still felt guilty, she had done this to people that she cared for a lot more than him. Then why? Why did she care this much for this child? She pondered this question for a while and then it came to her. She cared more for the man whose child this was and less about the child himself. Her care for his son, a child that was not hers, and upon his own personal realisation that his son was getting older and that he wasn't always going to be there to stop him from making mistakes, forced him into realising that there were more people who cared for him and that he could at last step aside and watch his son walk down his own path. Freed of his responsibilities as a father and promise as a husband Uratarou decided to rekindle his and Yama's childhood affair and give their relationship one last chance. With the same being true for Yama, she still felt a certain attraction towards the man and found that was the reason she was so worried about the teen, it was because she couldn't stand seeing the mask of worry on her dear Uratarou's face. With both her and his father spending more time around each other than apart, as much as Yama's busy schedule would let them anyway, Kaminari was more often than not left in the care of his jōnin sensei, Tatsu Nakamoto, as his friends had not yet returned from their long standing assignment, limiting the people he could hang out with. To curb his student's growing boredom Tatsu decided to come up with a little game that two could play as a way to pass time while he awaited his friends' return. His sensei came to realise that the Shidakage had set the standard too high for Kaminari and the other genin or rather the teen's skillset was too high for her standards. In the sense that he and his teammates were thrown right into the line of fire without first passing the precursors put in place. There were a great many precursors in place but in this case the precursor they had not passed was the Bell Test. However since his sensei found it utterly useless to perform the Bell Test and because Kaminari was his only student available at the time, he instead used the Rasenken as a trial, a Kenjutsu technique that was based on the Rasengan. At first the teen was baffled at the idea of such a jutsu being in circulation in the first place and more so that his sensei planned to pass on its secrets. He struggled at first with the rotation portion of the jutsu, not being used to moulding his chakra to such an extent, but after some instruction from his mentor Kaminari was able to force his way past this stage with sheer determination. The second stage of his training, compared to the first, was rather simple for him, especially considering the fact that his Thunder Release required him to put a large share of chakra into the creation of thunder-based jutsu.

Hours upon hours passed as the day went on, with Kaminari getting closer and closer to learning the jutsu as each hour passed. With each failed attempt the teen would learn from his mistakes and reformulate his strategy to approach and solve this problem. After going through a series of different methods and plans in an attempt to contain the rapidly spinning dense chakra needed for the finalisation of this jutsu, although a long and hard journey Kaminari managed to master the Kenjutsu technique within the short period of two days. His training had gone right through the last to day into the next. Tatsu was surprised at this fact reason being that the others who had tried to learn the jutsu so far had taken at least a couple of weeks or months to perfect the Rasenken, while it only took Kaminari a total of two days. His sensei didn't know what he was more surprised by; the fact that the teen had surpassed his own record of three weeks or that he had completed the jutsu at all. His initial shock left his sensei speechless although this display did not last for long as he initiated shinobi hand-to-hand combat with his student. Kaminari drew his sword and going for the first strike charged at the man and tried to pierce his skin in order to gauge his power. In response to this Tatsu used his palm to counter this strike by letting its blade pierce through his palm in order to stop it before drawing his own sword and slashing the teen across his chest. Catching the incoming blade Kaminari decided to add something extra for his sensei, flowing his lightning nature through sword, using it as lightning rod of sorts to reach him. In this moment his sensei was faced with one of two choices; either hang on to his sword and endure the charge of electricity flowing through it or let go of his sword his main form of attack. In the end he chose to discard his sword before creating some distance between him, his sword and student before sending a Lightning Release: Lightning Rod through the ground and into the sword, using it as a basis for his Beating the Drums of Raijin, another lightning-natured jutsu with a wide range. A thing some other teachers may consider to be a bit irresponsible but in his mind it was a reasonable thing to do considering the scope of Kaminari's skills, being far more competent in combat than some of the more mature chūnin. Quickly drawing his sword Kaminari swung it with such a great deal of force that he cut the giant ball of lightning in two in a matter of seconds. Complimenting the teen on his swordsmanship and reaction time Tatsu Nakamoto ran ahead, picking up his fallen sword in the processes Before reengaging the teen in a sword fight. Although this placed Kaminari at a major disadvantage he continued to follow the the elder swordsman's techniques and reactions carefully, and as the conflict went on his body and its reactions continued to grow more and more in tune with the flow of the fight, landing a few hits himself but for large portion of the fight he was the one who was getting injured and tossed aside like a rag doll. The fight went on for days on end with Kaminari showing signs of improvement as the days went by, as he did with the Rasenken, but nothing too major as Tatsu maintained his winning streak.

This little arrangement of theirs would go on for weeks, when his father went out with Yama he would go out with sensei and sneak off to the distant mountains outside thd Hidden Fern. It was during one of these occasions that his friends would return from their assignment, thus marking the end to their little arrangement. Kaminari although happy for the return of his friends begged his sensei to let him continue training with him with the latter scoffing this off almost instantaneously, reminding the teen that he was at the end of the day his sensei and that training him was a part of his job description. Noting that it wouldn't be the same, as the man's personal training reminded him of that of the noblemen at Tengoku Castle, his old home. Training would go on as usual from here on but Kaminari could sense that there was something off with sensei's training methods, they were less direct than usual or maybe he was just used to being pampered, and whatever the case was he had begun to slip. His sharpened senses had started to diminish and he knew why. He, unlike other genin, did not grow by training in a safe environment but instead flourished whenever his life was put on the line, whether it be on our on the field or at training, he needed his blood pumping for him and skin throbbing for him to sharpen his skills. This train of thought is what led to him to fleeing from the village in the middle of the night to the mountainscape just outside the settlement for some one-on-one training with nature. The cruelest of enemies. A force that would crush you without a moment of hesitation if it could. And the rugged terrain of the land made for the ultimate training session. He wanted to be pushed to his limits and that was exactly what the cold unforgiving landscape of the Land of Iron was offering. Once he was out of there Kaminari trained and decided to stay in the mountainscape for several hours, from late at night right through till morning. Although his father was used to these kinds of things his sensei was not as, although he was known for not coming home for days on end, the teen had never once missed a day of training, being quite the scholarly student. Tatsu went ahead after the teen had not attended three of his lessons and after his friends had not seen him for four days in total after this he checked for Kaminari at his house but instead of finding him here he was met by the site of an empty house with a whole lot of nothing. He searched around the Hidden Fern for hours but he couldn't seem to find him. It wasn't until he heard something about a blonde teen running off into the mountains for some "midnight yodelling" or so the gate guard told him. A rather strange ruse. But regardless Tatsu went off into the mountains looking for the teen, after searching for him for a couple of hours the man managed to find him. Kaminari was in middle of infusing his chakra nature into the Rasenken when found him, using his now brittle sword to blast through several earthen pillars jetting out from the ground. He had heard that parent jutsu of this particular Kenjutsu could be infused with an assortment of chakra natures, in theory it sounded simple but in practice it was nigh impossible. Nakamoto although enraged at the teen's childish behavior found himself in awe of his student's dedication and his enjoyment of the sound of clashing blades. The teen's figure was drenched in blood and his clothed reacked of sweat as the teen stood thrmere with his worn down sword. Unable to resist his own impulses and seeing his student's blood pulse Tatsu threw away his shinobi jacket, temporarily discarding his rank and seniority to join in, and ran towards the boy with his sword in hand. In an act of pure unbridled instinct Kaminari turned from blasting away the rock formations to blasting away his sensei, his face bathed in the essence of madness, hearing the noise of clashing blades made his mouth water with ecstasy as he pushed harder and harder. Forcing his sensei back close and closer into a corner before slashing the tendons in his right arm, disarming him in one step. The older man was shocked at this brutal display of swordsmanship, finding it to be quite uncharacteristic of the teen but then again he hardly knew him. Clenching his bloodied hand Tatsu let out a loud battle cry before laughing off the pain and continuing their fight. This confused the teen quite a bit, in his entire tenure as a genin this was the first time that he had ever encountered somebody enjoy being slashed, not since the Kijo at Three Wolves Shrine. With each clash Kaminari's body pulsed and his muscles ached for more blood, more sweat both sides were more than glad to participate the messy blood fight.

Both he and the blonde went on for hours on end before stopping at the sight of a merry band of samurai heading towards their location. Tatsu halted and caught his student's blade barehanded as he watched the troop head their way, none of the men seemed to be wearing the traditional garb of the samurai nor a headband, dismissing the idea that they were sent for. Four rōnin marching in middle of a snowstorm. A strange sight indeed. At first glance the rōnin could be mistaken for your typical samurai defects but this group in particular wore clothing that was not customary of their land, in other countries this may not have been any cause for alarm but in the Land of Iron it was unusual to find someone who did not care much for their rich heritage. Unless a rōnin, inhabitants of the land generally chose to embrace the past of their cold land, and even then, although they had abandoned their homeland the rōnin of their country did not abandon their culture, opting to wear at least some semblance of their samurai armour. Another thing that set him of was their light clothing, in a climate like theirs it was not strange to see someone wearing layers but not these samurai. One thing was for certain; the rōnin group were not of this land nor continent they were soldiers of the Land of Sunrise or so was the word on the street, although mere rumours they had some sample of truth the rōnin were indeed from the aforementioned land who had managed to get to the mainland a few months ago through their land's trading channels, landing them just north of the Land of Lightning's crooked coastline. From there the rōnin continued to travel north, passing through many towns before settling in a foreign country. The high council of the Shinobi Union was hesitant at first but after hearing that the foreign samurai had conquered the small but profitable Land of Sacred Dreams the council decided that the land should be monitored until further notice, or rather until they could formulate an informed strategy. According to the Anbu faction placed within the land reported that the inhabitants were not only being treated harshly but raped and tortured, somewhere drained of their chakra and others stored within the former daimyō's palace for further usage, these prisoners were treated as if they were cattle and not as the humans they knew they were. It was pure horror. The inhabitants of the conquered land were told that their pain and suffering was all for the "noble" cause that was the restoration of the Land of Sunrise, the land was apparently at the brink of collapse after the Takashio Kendo War. Hence was the purpose of his and his friends four month long reconnaissance mission in the capital of the conquered land, as the Hidden Fern was rather short-handed at the time. Reason being that in more recent times, the rōnin land had begun pushing their militia forces outwards and had conquered several of their neighbors, in order to repel such a thing their forces were split up into a number of factions under the grouped name of the Border Patrol Unit, and each team was sent out to lend additional support in the guarding of borders. And given the circumstances it would be safe to assume that one of these teams had failed as the rōnin had gained entry into land. The two rushed back towards the village using a secret path built into the north side of one of the mountains while on their way Tatsu chided himself for not being more careful as he with Kaminari rebuking his statement, saying that if it wasn't for him they wouldn't be in this situation in the first place. Telling his sensei to go ahead and call for reinforcements. Startled at his willingness to throw away his life Tatsu was reminded by the teen that he was far more equipped to deal with the matter.

Reminded of his mission to capture one of the Land of Sacred Dreams' corrupt politicians, more accurately Hiro Sōma the Minister of Finance who was rumoured to be on the rōnin's payroll and in charge of their transactions, while his students hid among the common folk as they kept watch on the ongoing affairs within the capital for months. Although Tatsu had managed to abduct the minister the situation didn't cease instead it worsened in the coming months, the rōnin forcibly recruiting the people into the militia, prompting the Shidakage to send for the genin's return. However due to unforeseen circumstances the other two genin did not receive the information until two months ago. Reminding his student of higher ranking Tatsu draws his sword before apologising for acting in a manner unfitting of a samurai such as himself. Telling his sensei that he should be the one apologising Kaminari rushes forward alongside him, engaging in another sword fight. Injured and exhausted, physically and mentally, the two were at a major disadvantage but that didn't stop either of them from massacring the rōnin until only the Rōnin General was left. A big burly man clad in red armour with a large katana on hand. Blood dripping on the floor, sweat running down the sides of their both sides agreed to part ways for the time being. But as the sensei student pairing were about to turn around the Rōnin General betrayed the two, cutting down them down as he stole Kaminari's headband. Healing up those of friends that had not been slain and decapitating the heads of those who had fallen comrades as proof that they had "stopped" a potential rōnin uprising. Such a thing would be considered to be foolish but in this case most of the Hidden Fern's samurai had been sent away on border patrol so the village wouldn't have the time or resources to confirm their identities or check each of their IDs. Everything was going according to plan. Slaughter the Border Patrol assigned to the north western entrance and infiltrate the Land of Iron. Gain entrance into the Hidden Fern and assassinate the Shidakage. Capture the Hidden Fern and set up camp there to act as a pathway to the Land of Sacred Dreams' supply line. Although he had lost some men against the two and the Border Patrol Team he had made it here to his target location, with less than 27 samurai on hand. It wasn't ideal but it would have to do. As the men and women turned around to leave, Tatsu Nakamoto grabbed on to the Rōnin General's leg as he tried to stand up, being kicked down and beaten to a pulp as many times as he'd try to stand up. Claiming that they would not make it past him he told Kaminari to run as far away as possible before being rudely interrupted by the the Rōnin General himself, telling him that he had to shitting himself if they thought that either he or his students were going to make it out of there alive. Slaughtering the jōnin in front of him and then turning around to do the same to Kaminari himself. He didn't want to die, but neither did his sensei. If he hadn't felt jealous. Jealous of the fact that Kara and Dōjin were hogging all of Nakamoto-sama's attention. Jealous that the only times that he could only see his sensei in-between missions, of which took up much of his time. Jealous of his friends' freedom. If he hadn't snuck out then him and his sensei wouldn't have come into contact with these rōnin and he wouldn't have had to fight them in the first place. And maybe, just maybe Tatsu would still be alive. Crawling towards his sword Kaminari stood up, his sword in hand, as his late teacher's words ran through his mind. The words that carried a secret. The secret to his personal Hiden Kenjutsu, the Rasenken. Holding sword up in front of him, the other swordsmen laughed their heads off and mocked his swordsmanship to their heart's content, apart from the Rōnin General himself, as much as he doubted that a simple youngling could do much against them he remained vigilant. However as good measure he had several of his men impale the teen's stomach before he could finish his actions, but before they could do this one of the fallen samurais got up and defended the teen, being run through by a number of bloodied katanas. Although confused at their friend's betrayal the Rōnin General did not cancel his order and had the others mutilate the traitorous rōnin along with Kaminari by poking their bodies' full of holes with their swords.

Enraged at the thought of his sensei's death and being on death's door himself Kaminari manifested the Kāma seal's power for the first, his body pulsated in sheer agony as his mind was warped and power intensified. As his body adjusted to the power, hurting less and less, his face was painted in the same colours as those of the Kijo he was so terrified of, a misshapen smile formed on his lips. A smile that continued widen itself until it reached his ears, masking the tears he had wept and those he wept at the moment. His eyes locked with the rogue samurai, his body bleeding out more blood than before. Kaminari knew something was off but with the kind of power that was flowing through his veins it was hard not to just give in to the temptation. As much as he tried to resist and as much as tried to fight it his Kāma had taken full control of his body. Swiping the rōnin general's katana from his very own hand in what could only be described as less than a heartbeat Kaminari turned the blade towards the man and swore to use that very same sword to hack off each and every part of rōnin general before using the man's own tongue to clean his blood off the blade. Brushing it off as nothing more than a meager threat from a disillusioned boy the man sent one of his lapdogs to deal the final but as he did, many of his colleagues, himself included, were surprised to find that the lacky been blown to bits by the teen. Enraged by this the General ordered his rōnin kill the teen but instead they are the ones who ended up being slaughtered, Kaminari using the Kāma alongside his Thunder Release to dispose of more than a dozen rōnin. That night the white sheet of snow that covered the land was dyed a deep crimson. The site wreaked of the smell of death as mangled bodies littered the snowy hill. Many of the rōnin who had made it out alive were left either maimed or dismembered and opted for a strategic retreat before reinforcements arrived. Among the pile of corpses laid that of the man who had killed his sensei, the General, dismembered precisely as he said he would. Crying out in pain the teen went ahead and asked for rhe name of the man he was about to murder. Noting that Kaminari had gone nuts he decided to go along with his demand, stating his name to be Ōkubo Tsunenaga before asking for his. Hearing this question the teen flew into a fit of rage and desecrated the man's body, Ignoring his wish of dying the samurai way. Retracting his Kāma seal the teen was exhausted in all senses passing out right beside his teacher. A symbolic but meaningful gesture, wishing to die alongside his friend and master, Tatsu Nakamoto.

The Hidden Fern on the other hand received a notice that an army of rōnin had just killed their north western Border Patrol Team and made it past the border a few days prior to this. And imagine the surprise on the Response Team's faces when the perpetrators were a no show. The Shidakage had been aware of the situation for a week now, this being the reason for her announcing the Travel Restrictions Policy for the time being and her wanting to limit the villagers activities outside their walls until the threat had passed, and when the attack didn't happen she was left baffled. They had double-checked the information to make sure that it hadn't been tampered with and send for eye witnesses of the scene. There was no way that they had could have gotten it wrong or misread it. It was impossible. At least that's what she and her council thought before witnessing weather change infront of their very eyes as the dense clouds began to thicken much further. And in a mere matter of seconds the sky had taken a deep shade of crimson, painting the heavens in what resembled blood. It had been a two years. Two years since he last used "that" power, the Thunder Release. Realising that the teen must be in some kind of trouble she sent a group of Anbu to go and assist him. Not long after she deployed them the sky had already begun to clear up with a number of feint life force signatures being detected alongside the outermost reaches of the mountainscape. A wide distance to cover in such a short amount of time. Hours passed before the search team found Kaminari wrapped in a makeshift blanket made up of mangled flesh and bodies in order to keep warm and the deceased Tatsu Nakamoto. Upon carrying both bodies back to the village Kaminari was admitted to Shida Private Hospital alongside, although at a somewhat later point, one of the rōnin that had lived through his assault. Despite being labeled as alive woman that they brought back might as well have been dead, the entire lower portion of her body and her right arm had been maimed by one his Kāma enhanced Thunder Release jutsu. The female rōnin had partly been spared due to the fact that she was the same samurai who had jumped in between him and Ōkubo's katana. Upon awakening the older woman wondered just how she had survived the teen's tantrum in a weak voice before turning around seeing the same teen sleeping in the bed right across her, before she could react Yama assured her that she was going to be alright as long as agreed to spill the beans on all the intel related to her homeland. Hesitant at first the rōnin woman was quickly reminded of the consequences should she not agree hunting towards Kaminari taking independent action and finishing the job. Openly admitting that she was terrified of the teen she agreed to the partnership before closing her eyes to rest, with the Shidakage telling him to save her strength for the perilous journey that lies ahead of her.

The captured rōnin was then transfered to and interrogated by the Commander of the Shida Torture and Interogation Forces, Hanabi Furuta, after she had finished up healing. Or rather until she could feel pain again or so he had heard, after all, what good was an interrogation of with a person whose nerve endings were numbed anyway, as to not ruin any of the pain inflicted upon them. Kaminari was not sure what to feel about this exactly, the female rōnin was the same one who had jumped in front Ōkubo's katana earlier preventing the teen from suffering a fatal wound but she was at the end of the day a rōnin. But in this case she was a rōnin of the Land of Sacred Dreams' and not one belonging to their country. Although eery about entire thing Kaminari chose to cast his doubt aside, trusting Yama's decision on the matter although this didn't mean that the teen had thrown his hatred for the female rōnin, it simply meant that it would be more subtle. But after attending Tatsu Nakamoto's funeral he would come to realise just what sort of man died as and what sort of man he'd continue to live on as within their hearts. Feeling that he at least owed to his late teacher he began work on trying to infuse his own nature affinity into the Kenjutsu technique. Meanwhile the rōnin was interrogated and forced to divulge the information she had surrounding their Infiltration Team and it's purpose in their land's greater plan, how her family had been killed, how she was forced out of the blacksmith trade and into that of the samurai. How the land was ruled by a group of rōnin known by the name of the Eight Honorific General, eight rōnin who were ranked as double black diamond criminals which would be their equivalent of an s-class criminal. Fearing that the organization was becoming a bit too influential for comfort Yama decided to adopt the youngling, changing her last name to Chibana, before having their Department of Scientific Ninja Tool Research and Development repair her maimed body parts with the latest that technology had to offer, earning the spite of the young woman. Although she had made it clear that she didn't like the fact she had been adopt or the Ninja tool prosthetics she had been given, on the inside she was secretly glad that the Shidakage had done all those things for her although she knew that it was simply a means of getting her to open up to them. And open up she did growing close to the woman in the following months as the Shidakage slowly but surely let her adopted rōninb daughter be known to the public and her council, who deemed the entire thing as a nice little project. Deciding that it might be time that the two sort out their differences the Shidakage sent both Hanami and Kaminari on a mission to the Land of Water to go and recover an ancient artifact that was stolen from the samurai during one of the past wars. Although he could see what she was trying to do Uratarou criticised her plan saying that for people like that forgiveness didn't come cheap. Not without any bloodshed that is. With Yama claiming that she knows all that but what he doesn't know is that his son and Hanami share something that neither of them could understand. As Kaminari, Hanami an a group of Anbu neared the border she went on to add that the thing they shared and what she and Uratarou shared was not the same. Their bond was that of love while that of the two youngsters was one formed from their battle instincts and that their bond unlike theirs would continue growing indefinitely, adding that they should they be allowed to nurture such a bond. Stunned by this Uratarou merely stated that she puts too much faith in her subordinates even those she hardly knew, as the Retrieval Team crossed the borders into the Land of Water.

Third Chapter: The Underwater Lab

Sometime after infiltrating the Land of Water Kaminari and his team of Anbu swapped out their clothes for some local threads and set up base in small fishing town just east of the border. A man by the name Atsushi had agreed to let the group stay at his place for the duration of their trip, though suspicious as to why he agreed to agreed to the man had agreed without hesitation as if he knew that they were coming. When questioned the fisherman simply scolded them for asking too many questions at once before spilling the beans that it was due to a prior arrangement with the Shidakage. Although he was not sure of the precise nature of their relationship he could tell that the his stepmother trusted the fisherman an awful lot, meaning that he should at least give him some credit. According to what they had gathered the elderly man was a local fisherman who the people of the town trusted without question, making it far easier for them to blend in with the townsfolk and gain their trust. On his first day Kaminari decided to look around for any hiding spots that could be used in case of an enemy attack. Although he did manage to find a couple of good hiding spots he didn't really see anything that caught his eye, feeling a bit tired Kaminari decided to return to the base and rest. Feeling a bit worried Yama got confirmation that the group had made it past the border and set up camp within a hours of arrival. Relations with the land had been uneasy for the longest time now and sending their shinobi into their territory without prior arrangements was not something that would sit well with their higher ups, sending a few drones into the area to monitor the ongoing situation. Using the mirror drones to convey further instructions the team was told that were to rendezvous with one of their government moles near the edge of the town. Yama contacted the group through the mirror drones and told them to meet with one of their ninja situated near the area. To secure their place among the larger countries their daimyō had demanded that the Hidden Fern infiltrate and set up spy networks throughout those countries in a bid to gather "dirt" on them to use as bargaining chips during negotiations. Although established centuries ago the Hidden Fern's spy network remained as one of their largest sources of information on the outside world. Upon meeting with the ninja his team was alerted that Hidden Mist had sent a research team to a desolate island just north of the coast of the Land of Tides, one of their smaller neighbouring countries, under the ruse that it was to map out the island but in truth it was to fish up a sacred treasure. The specifics were unclear but according to the ninja it had something to do with an old wise tale belonging to the island.

There was a tale in the Land of Tides. The tale of a lost boy and a fallen star. According to the tale there was once a boy, a shy boy, who had wandered away from home in order to pursue an old childhood love interest of his. A girl, a beautiful girl, who he had fallen madly in love with but refused to return those feelings, as although she was flattered by his gestures she turned her down in the end, causing him to fall into a deep despair. Feeling hopeless he prayed to the gods for a gift so magnificent and so glamorous that the girl would not be able to resist him. Pitying the poor soul the gods granted his heartfelt wish and plucked on star from the sky and handed it down to the boy. Presenting the gift to his unrequited love the girl was filled with such joy, happiness and wonder that the girl died fight there and then. Saddened by the death of his loved one the boy threw the fallen star far out into sea. Although Kaminari didn't seem to buy a single word of the story, none of them did not even Hanami, and she came from a land who based their lives around myths and fairytales. But considering that the Hidden Mist had sent a research team all the way out to Kappa Island, the group figured that there had to be some truth in the story, at least enough for the Mizukage to act on...
