The Kazekage's hat.
The Kazekage (風影, Literally meaning: Wind Shadow) is the Kage of Sunagakure, a title bestowed on the village's leader. The Kazekage is generally regarded as the strongest shinobi in the village. There have been four Kazekage in the village's history.
Overview[]
The Kazekage position was created after the formation of Suna by Genshin, the village's founder, that was the last of the five Kage to emerge. Unlike the Konohagakure, the slection of the Kazekage is determined by a select group of candidates that were recommended by the current active Kazekage and the Suna Council. If the active Kazekage retires, dies or are otherwise incapacitated, the next Kazekage is instead chosen by these select candidates.
This process was made in order to strengthen their reputation due to the decline of funding and the weaken state in numbers of the Sunagakure compared to other Five Great Shinobi Countries and to prevent panic of a sudden death or reported missing of a past Kazekage and struggle of selecting their next Kazekage.
If one of the Kazekage's predecessors is still alive, they may return to office rather than select a new Kazekage if the retired Kage or daimyō believe the candidates not yet ready to take on the title of the next kage at the time. The choice appears to be offical and cannot be declined. Much like Konaha, the Kazekage's inauguration is a major event in Suna, with most of the village attending. The new Kazekage is granted a ceremonial haori after the occasion. Once they assume the duties of Kazekage, their likeness is carved into a full-bodied statues and placed in selected locations of the village that are considered sacred, one such location is in the council's meeting chambers, and they usually move in to the Kazekage Residence. The Kazekage's office is located in the tallest building located in the center of the village.
Kazekage are responsible for most of the village's day-to-day affairs, such as assigning the village's ninja to missions or securing funding for the village's projects and personnel. The Kazekage spends most of their time in the village, only travelling abroad for events of vital importance to Suna. Throughout history, the Kazekage have earned a reputation for being feared and respected around the world, due be responsible for keeping Suna on an even footing with the other villages despite its small size and each Kazekage deals with constant stuggle of their weakened state of military power and strives to improve it in their own way possible. However, the Kazekage title is sometimes considered cursed, as all the Kazekage, including the current, have had many assassination and abduction attempts on their life. Most of the Kazekage have met untimely deaths at the hands of assassins; the village's affairs are decided by the Suna Council in the interim between Kazekage. The workload of Kazekage can be quite formidable, and as such retired Kazekage may continue to oversee certain sections of the village or, if not that, will advise the current Kazekage on request.
