Konohagakure (木ノ葉隠れの里, Konohagakure no Sato, Literally meaning: Village Hidden by Tree Leaves) is the hidden village of the Land of Fire. As the village of one of the Five Great Shinobi Countries, Konohagakure has a Kage as its leader known as the Hokage, of which there have been seven in its history. Konoha resides deep within a forest at the base of a mountain known as the Hokage Mountain, which has the faces of all those who have taken the office of Hokage engraved on it.[1] It is surrounded on all sides by enormous walls.[2] While generally seen as the most powerful of the ninja villages,[3] Konoha has enjoyed many years of relative peace and stability.[4]

The standard attire for Konoha shinobi consists of blue or black shirts which may or may not have swirl patterns on the shoulders, along with matching colored pants under a green flak jacket which also has a red swirl on the back and pockets on the chest area. They also tend to wrap bandages around their legs. Many Konohagakure ninjas use Fire Release techniques.

Its primary function served as a testing ground for the survival and fighting skills of genin trying to become chūnin. It was a very dangerous place, filled with hordes of flora and fauna, often gigantic, poisonous — or even more likely, both — hence its name.

The Hokage Mountain.

The Hokage Mountain (火影山, Hokage-yama) is a mountain overlooking Konohagakure that has all the faces of the Hokage carved into the stone. It was envisioned by Hashirama Senju as a symbol that the Hokage would always watch over the village.[6] The Hokage Rock is easily the most identifiable feature in the village, such that when the village is destroyed during Pain’s Assault, only the presence of the Hokage Mountain (undamaged by the destruction) confirms to others that the rubble was once Konoha.[7]

It was initially believed to have been founded by the Uchiha;[13] however, it was founded by the Second Hokage and was given to the Uchiha as a sign of trust and good faith between the Senju and themselves.[14] Tobi believed, however, that this was just a method of ostracizing them from the village: having built the police station next to a prison and distancing the Uchiha from taking part in the actual governing of Konoha.

The Mission Assignment Desk is located within a huge, wide-open space with six windows and lofty ceilings with two stick-like lights. The ceiling also has the kanji for the word “shinobi” (忍, shinobi) printed on it. There is a long table where the Hokage and other ninja sit when distributing the missions. On the front of the desk, there is a white banner with the kanji that says “mission assignment this way” (任務受付はこちらまで, ninmu uketsuke wa kochira made) and at the top is another banner that says "everybody, do your best" (皆さんガンバ, minna-san ganba). The Mission Assignment Desk was first seen when Team 7 completed their mission to capture the cat, Tora, for Madam Shijimi.

The river is located on the land where the Uchiha clan once lived and prospered[15] and at some point, it passes through a deep ravine. It was at this river that Shisui gave Itachi his Sharingan and “erased his existence”, but it was thought that Itachi had drowned him.[16]

Within the village, there are many powerful and well-respected clans. Of these, there are five clans that are regarded as noble clans. These are the: Aburame, Akimichi, Hyūga, and Uchiha clans — the latter of which was regarded as the most powerful clan in the village.[21][22]

Emergency Protocols[]

Konoha has a protocol in case the village is ever under attack.[23]

  1. Eliminate the enemy units.
  2. If phase 1 is not viable, evacuate every civilian to the nearest shelter hidden throughout the village.
  3. Use all of the forces in the village to eliminate the enemy with full force using home-field advantage.

Trivia[]

  • The hiragana あん (an) is painted on the four entrance gates of the village (one hiragana on each door).[24] This means “hermitage” or “retreat”. In Kanji, the character is “庵”. There are also torii built all around the perimeter wall of the village.[25]
  • Masashi Kishimoto stated that Konohagakure was modeled after his own hometown.
  • In the first Naruto volume, there’s a sketch of downtown Konoha. In a close-up is a billboard with a cartoon version of Masashi Kishimoto holding a paintbrush.
  • According to Kai no Sho, Konoha has the highest population out of all the five main hidden villages.
  • After Konoha's destruction, there were very few glimpses of the village during its reconstruction in the manga until chapter 616, showing the village looking as it did before the invasion. In the anime (as well as Ultimate Ninja Storm 3), most of the village was built within the crater caused by Pain.
  • Konoha is located in the central part of the Land of Fire.[26]
