Megumi (恵) is a kunoichi hailing from the Jōmae Village (錠前の里, Jōmae no Sato, literally meaning: Lock Village, English TV: Hidden Lock Village). Due to her prodigious talent in espionage, assassination, and the ninja arts, she was a prominent member of the village's covert Anbu branch, Hinge, and considered one of the most competent ninja from the Land of Keys.

Background and Personality

Megumi originated from a village that she can't recall the name of; it was ravaged by Boro and his virus when she was only 3 years old, as the Kara Inner had just begun his mission of "saving" villages from his virus in order to take them as followers. Megumi's parents charged her older sister, Mino, with escaping the village moments before Boro's henchmen kicked down their home door. The two found themselves living as refugees in Jōmae for a time until they were captured and made to stand before the village elders and Kaitō, the village head at the time. As foreign children with no guardians, the elders were keen to use them as experiments for a newly created mind control jutsu. Mino, who was unable to use chakra to a degree and was strangely resistant to mind control, was regrettably disposed of. On the other hand, Megumi, who even at such a young age was able to express her chakra quite well, was easy to manipulate and was raised to become a Jōmae kunoichi. Her few real memories were sealed away deep within her psyche and replaced with false ones, making her believe she was the adopted daughter of Kaitō.

Megumi is a young, average height kunoichi sporting neck length black hair and beautiful amethyst eyes with a sharp gaze. She has almond colored skin and a slender physique. Her attire was subject to her mission at hand; as an espionage-nin and assassin, blending in and remaining inconspicuous was imperative, so she often observed what current trends were followed in the villages she's tasked to infiltrate and mimic them. With her induction into Kara in the New Era, she often donned a thigh-length qipao or a jumpsuit along with along with the black hooded robe that is the standard of the organization.

Chakra and Physical Prowess

Megumi is hailed as the one of the strongest Jōmae ninja ever created for good reason. From her days as an Academy Student, Megumi displayed an innate talent for the ninja arts and unusually large chakra reserve, which led to her gradual rise through the ninja ranks. By the time she was promoted to a chūnin, Kaitō and the village elders unanimously decided to begin training her as a Hinge member. In four years time, she became proficient enough to track down and assassinate targets with a single jutsu. While it's not her preferred form of combat, Megumi is also quite skilled with taijutsu thanks to her time in Hinge. She has remarkable speed and strength, which was enough to easily subdue several Jōmae jōnin at the age of 13.

Jinchūriki Transformation

As Son Gokū's perfect jinchūriki, Megumi was granted full access to his chakra and stamina. Due to their relationship, Son Gokū was able to disrupt her chakra to dispel genjutsu, accelerate her healing, and grant her access to various types of Lava Release jutsu without transforming. Like other jinchūriki, Megumi could utilize Version 1 or 2 transformations as well as Tailed Beast Mode if necessary. In this state kr Version 2, she could fire Tailed Beast Balls and use other abilities granted to her by the tailed beast.

Senjutsu Influence

Megumi can combine her transformation with Sage Mode to further enhance her abilities with senjutsu. Due to Son Gokū being a Sage himself, he is able to quickly gather and balance natural energy for Megumi to prolong her Sage Mode and allow her to enter it instantaneously. With this power, she gained access to a unique transformation which appeared to be a senjutsu-enhanced variation of Baryon Mode, albeit much weaker than what Kurama could produce. When found with their back against the wall, Son Gokū was able to burn his life force using the mode to drastically increase Megumi's raw power and speed to unbelievable levels in order to contend with Ōtakeshiki Ōtsutsuki. This form led to Son Gokū's eventual death, depriving Megumi of his chakra and all abilities connected to him.

Megumi in Kara attire with the Kāma activated

After defeating Ōtakeshiki Ōtsutsuki, Megumi's left wrist was branded with his Kāma, which granted her a considerable boost to her physical and chakra-based abilities. Additionally, Megumi is capable of flight, opening rifts to any location and other dimensions, and absorbing chakra using Kāma as a medium. However, a drawback of using it, is that Megumi is unable to combine it with her Sage Mode as Ōtakeshiki purposefully prevents it, depriving her of senjutsu and superior sensory abilities.

Once activated, the mark grows to cover her entire arm and the left side of her face with elegant black lines. When knocked unconscious or drained of enough chakra, her Kāma could fully manifest Ōtakeshiki's conscience, allowing him to take control of Megumi's body and use his monstrous power. In this state, a pointed spiral horn protrudes from the left side of her forehead; her right eye becomes a Byakugan and she is enveloped in a wispy, dark green aura. When the Kāma has been mastered and its full abilities become accessible, both horns are present, however her left eye remains as hers.

White Kāma and Senjutsu Influence

After assisting Ōtakeshiki with freeing the soul of his deceased lover, Suzuka Gozen, he detached himself from the Kāma and moved on to the afterlife to be with her. At the behest of Suzuka Gozen, he blessed Megumi with his full, unadulterated power in the form of a new white Kāma and the Ōtsutsuki Will. With this change, she lost the access to the her Space-Time technique, but regained use of Sage Mode and combine it with the white Kāma. Senjutsu along with the thousands of years of battle experience the Kāma grants, augmented her capabilities to a level that led to her overwhelming the Shinigami.

Nature Transformations

Earth Release

Megumi, in terms of her own base ability, is able use four of the five basic nature transformations with Earth Release being her specialty and one she is most skilled . With it, she could increase the gravity of herself and others or decrease it, granting her allies the gift of temporary flight. She could also drastically alter the battlefield with techniques that can turn large areas of it into a treacherous swamp or even lower and raise segments of the earth itself. Offensively, Megumi may employ the use of earthen dragons or razor-sharp spears to skewer her enemies. Perhaps the most acclaimed technique in her collection is the Earth Release: Shadow Clone paired with her ability to detonate them. Unlike the typical Shadow Clone Technique, the Earth Release variant creates physically identical shadow clones made of mud, which allows them to reform after being struck and only disperse if willed or the clone exhausts its shared chakra. As such, Megumi would often send a clone as a scout or as a method of assassination with use of the Clone Great Explosion technique, a highly versatile weapon that made even daring to approach her terrifying.

Lava and Fire Release

As a jinchūriki of Son Gokū, Megumi was able to use Lava Release. With this kekkei genkai, she could produce molten rocks and highly corrosive acid from her mouth, create defenses reinforced with rubber, and even manipulate volcanic ash to seal enemies.

Megumi also gained the ability to use the Monkey Flame, a special form of Fire Release that utilizes the green flames of Son Gokū. Monkey Flame is much more intense than typical fire and is even able to overwhelm some water-based techniques, but are difficult to control as they require mastery over senjutsu. Her Lava Release prowess and ability to use Monkey Flame was greatly unusual, as Son Gokū's previous jinchūriki, Roshi, could only produce molten rocks when not in his tailed beast state. After Son Gokū's death, she lost access to Lava and Fire Release techniques.

Water, Wind, and Lighting Release

Due to her preference for Earth Release and being the jinchūriki of Son Gokū at the time, Megumi was not very proficient with the other nature transformations. She was only able to shoot large bullets of water and exhale blasts of wind-nature chakra. As for Lightning Release, she was able to discharge electricity from her palms and apply it to her water technique. After training with a missing-nin while travelling through Kirigakure after the events of Megumi Hiden: A Wolf In Sheep's Clothing, Megumi expanded upon her arsenal of Water and Wind Release. In no time, she learned to manipulate water into that of fierce dragons and even fuse lightning into them while also learning to use wind-natured chakra to form a seemingly impenetrable barrier or release waves of sharp compressed wind with a mere hand motion.

Due to her large chakra reserves, Megumi was able to learn and master the senjutsu of Water Screen Cave under the tutelage of the four-tailed beast, Son Gokū, as indicated by the red pigmentation around her eyes. Sage Mode enhanced Megumi's techniques as well as physical and sensory parameters, granting her immense strength and the ability to sense chakra across vast distances. To be deemed worthy of learning Son Gokū's senjutsu, Megumi had to prove herself by defeating one of his guardian apes. Not only did she accomplish the goal, she had mercy on the ape and refused to kill it, instead offering the Seal of Reconciliation to make peace. Megumi's show of strength and compassion fostered the beginnings of a deep respect for her as it reminded Son Gokū of a shinobi who risked it all for everyone's sake during the Fourth Shinobi World War.

Megumi Hiden: A Wolf in Sheep's Clothing

In the Megumi Hiden: A Wolf in Sheep's Clothing novel, Megumi finds herself partnered with Otogakure ANBU member, Arikurin, as they investigate a series of disappearances occurring in Jōmae Village. Along the way, Megumi reveals that it all began when her adoptive father, Kaitō, was discharged from a hospital owned by a man named Victor, who unbeknownst to them, is a Kara inner. Since then a foul chakra has drifted about that village, which was discovered to be from an artificial God Tree. Following a quickly crafted plan, Megumi and Arikurin managed to destroy the tree and Kaitō, but not without consequences. In the end, she was forced to abandon Jōmae Village but was attacked by Ōtakeshiki Ōtsutsuki, a celestial being who claimed to be observing their crusade against Kaitō and his God Tree. Son Gokū took control of Megumi's body and together with Arikurin, along with a deadly kinjutsu, killed Ōtakeshiki but at the expense of Son Gokū's own life. In a desperate attempt to escape death, Ōtakeshiki branded her with a Kāma, which she was unexpectedly compatible with. Without Son Gokū and having numerous questions she desired answers to, Megumi decided to make her way to the Land of Fire where Ōtsutsuki have also attacked but not without a few stops in between.
