Michi Izana (猿飛アサヒ, Izana Michi) is a shinobi of Konohagakure's Izana Clan. Orphaned in the Nine-Tails' attack on the village, she was taken in and raised by her grandfather, the Third Hokage, Hiruzen Sarutobi. From her youth, she displayed incredible skill as a ninja, but longed to escape her sheltered upbringing and become a great protector of the Land of Fire. After befriending Naruto Uzumaki and joining Team Kakashi along with him, Sasuke Uchiha, and Sakura Haruno, she began to push herself by working with and competing against her teammates. In the years that would follow, she became a powerful and respected kunoichi known as the Vanguard of the Hidden Leaf (木ノ葉隠れの前衛, Konohagakure no Zen'ei, literally meaning: Advance-guard of the Hidden Tree Leaves). She became instrumental in winning the Fourth Shinobi World War, and she became one of Naruto's aides once he became Hokage, becoming known as the Right Hand of the Seventh Hokage (七代目火影の顧問, Nanadaime Hokage no Komon, literally meaning: Advisor of the Seventh Hokage).
Background[]
Michi was born on November 3 to Konoha's Izana Clan, famed for being the only known users of the Wood Release. She was named by her father who hoped that she would grow up and serve as a path to a better future after the destruction wrought by the attack of the Nine-Tails. Her father, Hideaki Izana, was the son of the Third Hokage, while her mother was Maiko, the daughter of the Third Hokage and a former member of the Sarutobi Clan. Hideaki and Maiko were both highly respected shinobi, though upon Maiko becoming pregnant, she decided to open a small flower shop, practicing flower arranging to keep herself busy during her pregnancy. She also became good friends with Kushina Uzumaki, the wife of the Fourth Hokage, who was also pregnant at the time. As the time for Kushina to give birth drew near, Minato asked Hideaki to accompany them, as his Wood Release may help contain the Nine-Tails, should things go wrong. They were attacked by Tobi after Kushina had given birth, however, and while Minato teleported to safety with his son, Naruto, Hideaki tried to protect Kushina from Tobi. Tobi managed to gain the upper hand and stabbed Hideaki, taking Kushina and releasing the Nine-Tails, sending it to attack Konoha. During the attack, Hideaki came to and stabilized his wound, rushing to the village to offer his aid and get Maiko to safety. While the shop was destroyed in the Nine-Tails' attack, Maiko was weak but alive, and Hideaki got her to safety before returning to help subdue the Nine-Tails so Minato could seal it within Naruto. After the sealing, he succumbed to his injury and died. After the attack, Maiko fell into a coma and was hospitalized. She gave birth soon after, and she awoke long enough to kiss Michi on the forehead before she died.
After birth, Michi was taken in personally by her grandfather, the Third Hokage. As a result of her upbringing, Michi spent a lot of her time alone until her cousin, Konohamaru, was born four years later. Michi felt it was her personal responsibility to look out for him, but she also found him somewhat annoying. While being raised by Hiruzen, she was only ever called "Honorable Granddaughter" (お孫娘, Omagomusume-sama) by the villagers because of her relationship to the Hokage. Like Konohamaru, she balked at this treatment, as she looked up to her grandfather and the heroic figure her father was described as being and wanted her own reputation as a shinobi, one that would rival theirs. Despite this desire, Michi never had a desire to become the Hokage herself, as she considered the administrative side of the position too boring and time-consuming.
Michi and Konohamaru were both lonely as children, as their family members were often busy, and the village children avoided playing with them because of their high position as grandchildren of the Hokage. Michi, who showed an aptitude as a ninja from a young age, was trained privately, initially by Ebisu with her brother, but also occasionally by her grandfather. As she showed greater promise in her training, she was instead trained by her uncle Asuma, and as a result she rarely spent time with Konohamaru, causing both children to become more lonely and develop a strong rivalry.
Personality[]
Michi is noted as being particularly charming and headstrong. She is somewhat awkward around new people, as she rarely interacted with others as a child, and as such, she tends to fall for even the most obvious of tricks and scams. Growing up as the talented scion of the Third Hokage, she places quite a lot of stock in social norms and formality, though she also has a more boisterous side that typically emerges when she is around those she is comfortable with. She is very observant and perceptive, thought this sometimes causes her to miss out on the bigger picture and come to the wrong conclusion due to her fixation on tinier details.
A prominent trait Michi possesses is her stubborn devotion to being recognized by others and making her own way. As she hopes to be a protector of Konoha, she tends to bite off more than she can chew, and this often leads to her overexerting herself and getting hurt. She also tends not to admit when she is wrong, stubbornly resolving to see a task through even it if is impossible. Though this can get her into trouble, she is also a hard worker, and oftentimes she manages to pull off improbable or impossible things due to this tenacity.
The death of her grandfather hit her hard, causing her to become more closed off and hesitant. She also develops a bit of a temper, and tends to act more rashly than before. She began to resent the memory of her parents as well, feeling that they had abandoned her in favor of being shinobi and serving the village. Despite this, her time with Naruto and Jiraiya served as both a distraction and a means of understanding her parents' choices and hopes for her. This carries on into her training at Kakazan, where she gets to speak with her father after drinking from the Forbidden Wellspring. This helps her to come to terms with the past and decide to focus on what awaits in the future, becoming steadfast in her resolve to help and protect the people of Konoha, particularly those she cares for. Due to this newfound dedication and tenacity, she was able to stand beside Naruto, Sasuke, and Sakura in the Fourth Shinobi World War, inspiring the Allied Shinobi Forces and becoming a hero to them.
In her adulthood, Michi became more aware of social situations, losing her naivety. Due to her hero complex, she fully devotes herself to helping Naruto run and protect Konoha, a trait that endears her to the villagers and especially young kunoichi, but tends to interfere in her personal relationships, namely her romantic relationship with Kiba Inazuka. Despite this, her stubbornness helps her keep the relationship together, and she always does her best to find time to devote to it. After an argument with Kiba, however, she comes to understand the importance of slowing down and taking breaks, and she begins to take more time off to focus on her family and friends, allowing Konohamaru and Shikamaru to pick up some of her slack.
Appearance[]
Many people note that Michi possesses the traditional Sarutobi features of brown hair and black eyes, thought it is said that her appearance more closely resembles that of her father than her mother. She is usually identified by the prominent freckles possessed by all members of the Izana Clan, an aspect of her appearance which she is initially somewhat self-conscious about, but later comes to accept and even like. She is noted to be slightly tall for her age, though this becomes less accurate as she ages.
In Part I, Michi wears her hair in a short ponytail. She wears a short-sleeved green top with the Izana and Sarutobi clan symbols embroidered on each shoulder and black shorts that stop a bit above the knee. She wears her forehead protector around her waist, and a shuriken holster hangs from the back of it. She also wears a pair of black sandals. In Part II, her hair is now in a longer ponytail that falls down her back. She now wears a black mesh armor top beneath large green jacket with a high collar, which also bears the Izana crest on the back. She wears black shorts, which now reach her mid-thigh, with capri-length black mesh fishnets underneath. She still wears black sandals and her forehead protector around her waist, which is also adorned with a simple black sash bearing the Sarutobi clan symbol.
In The Last: Naruto the Movie, her hair is now held in two braids, which she wears loose over her shoulder. She now wears a green, fur-lined jacket with a long-sleeved black top and a pair of black shorts with a loose green skirt over them. After becoming the Hokage's Aide, she wears her hair in a long braid, and her hair now looks a bit more wild and spiky. She wears a traditional green top with a simple design and the Izana crest on its back, capri-length black pants, and black and green boots. She also still wears her forehead protector as a belt, and attached to it is the sash embroidered with the Sarutobi clan symbol.
Abilities[]
Michi was initially a fairly talented ninja. She considered herself to be slightly less skilled than prodigies like Sasuke Uchiha and Neji Hyuga. She rapidly improved under the training of Asuma and later Kakashi, due to their high degree of skill. Michi became capable of holding her own against opponents like Naruto, Gaara, and Kabuto Yakushi. Michi gained the recognition of all three Sannin and her grandfather, who personally acknowledged her growth. She was also able to go toe to toe with members of Akatsuki, and she became capable of using basic senjutsu at an extremely young age. By the age of 15, she attained Sage Mode, and she then fought several Akatsuki members single-handedly and even defeated Orochimaru in one-on-one combat. During the Fourth Shinobi World War, she defeated several reincarnated jinchūriki and Kage, including her grandfather, and her synergy with Naruto and tactical mind was believed to be what turned the tide of the war. In her adulthood, she is considered a master of ninjutsu and senjutsu, and she is considered one of the greatest shinobi of all time, as well as the greatest kunoichi. She is said to be equal in power to Naruto Uzumaki and Sasuke Uchiha, and it is said their combined might is enough to destroy the world. On her own, she was capable of defeating extremely powerful opponents, such as the Black Zetsu, Madara Uchiha, and Kaguya Ōtsutsuki, and managed to pressure Isshiki Ōtsutsuki and briefly overwhelm him.
Chakra and Physical Prowess[]
Michi has an incredibly vast reserve of chakra, which is bolstered by her status as the reincarnation of Yaksha Ōtsutsuki, the daughter of the Sage of Six Paths. It was stated that she had about twice as much chakra as her grandfather, even as a child, and that her raw potential matched that of Hashirama Senju and her ancestor Yae Izana. She initially had less chakra than Naruto, although her superior control put them on nearly equal terms. As a member of the Izana Clan, she had the ability to more easily absorb natural energy, though this ability was initially weak before her training on Kakazan. As she began to learn senjutsu, her chakra reserves naturally improved by vast amounts, and she became capable of transferring chakra, performing hand seals with one hand, and healing her body at an astounding rate; she also learned from Sakura to vastly boost her strength, speed, and stamina by channeling her chakra through her body. During her senjutsu training, she learned to counter genjutsu by utilizing natural energy, though this technique is not universal and can be fooled. Additionally, she learned to utilize her vast chakra reserves to take advantage of rare kekkei genkai, such as the Explosion Release and the Swift Release, to further augment her physical skill.
Michi was initially a very weak close-range fighter, and her knowledge of taijutsu was basic at best. She began to learn physical techniques that she could apply in unique ways to play to her incredible speed. Her speed was her greatest asset, and she even gained the title of Green Blur of the Hidden Leaf (Konohagakure no Midori Bokashi, literally meaning: Green Blur of the Hidden Tree Leaves). This training continued under the tutelage of the monkeys of Kakazan, where she learned more advanced taijutsu. She was able to use natural energy to selectively enhance her physical strikes, which made it harder for opponents to accurately judge her physical strength. By the time she was an adult, her physical prowess and speed were heightened to the point where she was capable of effortlessly defeating dozens of opponents on her own.
Ninjutsu[]
By the time she joined Team Kakashi, Michi had learned several basic techniques, such as the Clone Technique and the Earth Release: Rock Pillar. While she was training at Kakazan, she began to learn more varied techniques, and she learned to summon several ninja monkeys, including the Monkey King Jizō and the massive ape Ōzaru. When she assisted with Naruto's senjutsu training at Mount Myoboku, she learned more advanced techniques and made contracts with several toads. The monkeys also taught her fūinjutsu and the concept of cooperation jutsu. She was also trained in several weapon styles, including shurikenjutsu and bōjutsu.
Earth Release: Green Bullet[]
One of the earliest techniques Michi developed, the Earth Release: Green Bullet allows the user to channel Earth Release chakra into their finger, then release it in a powerful burst. While the initial use of the technique only created a single projectile, which was fired from the user's index finger like a gun, it was later improved into the Earth Release: Green Salvo, which fired a larger number of bullets. This technique would become less commonly used as time went on, but it remained one of Michi's go-to techniques.
Hamorebi[]
Michi's signature jutsu is the Hamorebi. This technique is similar in concept to the Green Bullet, but the chakra is channeled into the user's hand and mixed with natural energy, producing a unique green chakra bloom. Despite the use of natural energy, this technique is not classified as senjutsu because the natural energy is drawn into the technique externally, rather than within the body. This technique is typically channeled into the user's hand, but it can also be unleashed as a projectile. While Michi initially conceived of and first used this technique while searching for Tsunade with Naruto and Jiraiya, she was not able to perfect it until her training at Kakazan. Over time, she developed a number of variations, such as the Sage Art: Pure Hamorebi. Sasuke Uchiha was even able to channel the flames of Amaterasu though the Hamorebi to create the Shadowed Green Flame Blossom. By the time she became an adult, she was even capable of combining the Hamorebi and the Hamorebi Barrage to overwhelm large groups of opponents.
Nature Transformation[]
Unlike most of the Sarutobi clan, Michi's natural affinity is Earth Release, though she also has a secondary affinity with Fire Release. Drinking from the Forbidden Wellspring of Kakazan granted her the ability to more easily utilize the other four nature transformations. She slowly built up her repertoire of new techniques over time, combining them with natural energy to produce powerful senjutsu. After her training at Kakazan, Michi also became capable of using Wood Release, although the reason for this is not known, even to her. Later, Michi's Six Paths Sage Mode would enable her to use all five nature transformations and Yin-Yang Release with ease. She also becomes able to replicate and enhance kekkei genkai, such as the Storm Release, as well as the ability to heal and revitalize others with a touch.
Senjutsu[]
Because Michi is descended from the Izana Clan, she was able to easily absorb natural energy. In order to allow her to more effectively hone this ability and direct the energy, Michi was taken to train with the monkeys at Kakazan, and eventually earned the chance to drink from the Forbidden Wellspring, which even Hiruzen was unable to accomplish. Upon drinking from the Wellspring, she gained the absorb natural energy passively, enabling her to use senjutsu and enter Sage Mode. Michi's Sage Mode is characterized by green eyes with flower-like pupils surrounded by green markings resembling tomoe; her freckles also turn green and become more defined, connecting to her eye markings via thin green lines. This also allowed her to transform parts of her body using natural energy. Michi's Sage Mode enhanced her physical strength, speed, and stamina, also granting her greater sensory abilities. It also boosted the power of her techniques, and allowed her to more easily utilize other nature transformations. After further training and refinement of these abilities, she attains a heightened state known as Pure Path Sage Mode, where she is surrounded by a mantle of green chakra, she grows a horn, and her hair becomes longer and wild. While in Pure Path Sage Mode, she gains even greater power in exchange for a greater need for natural energy. This state also allows her to replicate the effects of kekkei genkai by mimicking them using natural energy. In later years, she became capable of perfectly regulating the flow of natural energy entering her body, and she was able to enter Sage Mode with ease and maintain it for long periods of time.
Six Paths Senjutsu[]
Michi later gained access to the Six Paths Senjutsu (六道仙術, Rikudō Senjutsu), allowing her to to fly, manifest up to eight Truth-Seeking Balls composed of all five basic natures, use Yin–Yang Release, and imbue them with the Six Paths Chakra. She could use them as projectiles, mold them into weapons and shields, or infuse them with the Sage Art: Pure Hamorebi to use the Truth-Seeking Green Blossom Barrage, a technique capable of destroying the planetoids created by Chibaku Tensei.
Six Paths Sage Mode[]
With the power given to her by Hagoromo Ōtsutsuki, Michi gained access to the Six Paths Sage Mode (六道仙人モード, Rikudō Sennin Mōdo). In this mode, she gains the green eyes and blossom pupils of her normal Sage Mode, but she gains six tomoe markings on her face, three under each eye, and she takes on an appearance more similar to Hagoromo himself; her markings become white, she grows a white horn surrounded by a patch of white skin, white fingertips, and white streaks in her hair. Her physical attributes and techniques are further augmented, to the point where she could dodge attacks that moved at the speed of light and deflect Truth-Seeking Balls. It also empowers her sensory abilities to the highest possible level, enabling her to predict which dimension Kaguya Ōtsutsuki would send them to when she used her Amenominaka.
By utilizing Wood Release with this new mode, she could use Sage Art Wood Release: Pure Avatar of the Deep Forest to create a wooden construct that rivaled Naruto's Tailed Beast Avatar and Sasuke's Rinnegan-empowered Complete Body — Susanoo in size and power. The Pure Avatar can also regenerate from damage and lost limbs nearly instantaneously, and it can be infused with natural energy and Hamorebi chakra to use one Michi's most powerful techniques, the Pure Tensei Hamorebi, which matches the destructive power of Sasuke's strongest technique, Indra's Arrow.
Ginkgo Mode[]
Years after the Fourth Shinobi World War, the intensive training and meditation on the nature of chakra and natural energy, Michi was able to reach and even more heightened form of Sage Mode, which she refers to as Ginkgo Mode. While in Gingko Mode, Michi resembles a member of the Otsutsuki Clan, as most of her features become stark white. Her hair lengthens and becomes perfectly straight, fanning out to resemble that of Yaksha Otsutsuki (as well as a ginkgo leaf). The features of her Six Paths Sage Mode, like her markings and her horn, become more pronounced, and she is surrounded by a mantle of green chakra.
In Ginkgo Mode, Michi is able to convert her own chakra into natural energy at will, and vice versa. As such, she is capable of using senjutsu without needing to absorb natural energy beforehand, and she can even use techniques that rely solely on natural energy. This allows her to bypass the chakra absorption of members of the Otsutsuki Clan. She also gains a massive boost to her strength, speed, reflexes, and endurance. In order to maintain Ginkgo Mode, Michi must be utterly focused and maintain a clear mind, as the state requires a level mental state. An additional drawback of this mode is the toll it takes on Michi's body, as if she uses the mode too much, she can cause extreme and potentially fatal damage to her body.
Intelligence[]
Michi was known for her cunning mind and analytical nature. She is also a quick learner, and years of one-on-one tutelage have given her a preference for guided learning. Many people praise her instinct in battle, though she occasionally overthinks combat scenarios and misses opportunities due to that. Her grandfather and the previous Hokage praise her as a skilled commander; when presented with a situation, she is able to effectively determine the best course of action quickly, and she understands how best to utilize the skills of others, while mitigating their weaknesses. After meeting Hagoromo Ōtsutsuki, Michi gained the innate ability to grasp the nature of chakra and comprehend all universal things, allowing her to quickly master the new powers she received. In her adulthood, she was seen as a master tactician and an effective teacher, and she regularly taught at Konoha's Ninja Academy. When fighting opponents like Kinshiki Ōtsutsuki, she was able to gain the upper hand by selectively enhancing and weaking her attacks, as to mask her true capabilities and force her opponent to reveal theirs.
Michi's greatest mental strength is her keen observation skill. During the first bell test with Kakashi, she was able to impress him by staying back and making a note of his strategy, thus enabling her to predict his actions and use her teammate's failed attempts to her advantage. She would usually avoid combat when fights broke out, choosing to analyze the styles and abilities of her allies and enemies, using that information to her advantage to employ unexpected strategies and maneuvers. She was able to effectively utilize even seemingly useless skills and techniques, such as perfectly utilizing Naruto's Sexy Technique to throw opponents off guard. Her aptitude for gauging the strengths and weaknesses of others makes her a great tactician and teacher, and she often assisted Academy students with learning ninjutsu and discerning their nature type affinities.

Part I[]
Prologue — Land of Waves[]
Michi is first seen begging her grandfather to allow her to join the other genin graduates, but he denies her request, wanting to keep her safe and allow her to get more training. When Konohamaru runs off and gets up to trouble with Naruto, Michi chases them down and overhears Naruto mention his dream to be Hokage. Recognizing Naruto as the boy who stole the Scroll of Seals and defeated Mizuki single-handedly, Michi devises a plan to test Naruto's abilities. She informs Ebisu of his location, then hides and watches as Naruto beats Ebisu with the Harem Technique. Michi, despite being disgusted by the technique itself, recognizes Naruto's creation of shadow clones and his tenacity as impressive, and falsely declares to him that she too wishes to become Hokage, cementing the two as rivals. The Third Hokage, sensing that the two have the potential to be great friends and rivals, allows Michi to join the other genin graduates. As Kakashi is one of the most skilled jonin in Konoha, she is assigned to his team, and he is instructed to keep a careful eye on her and to prepare her for the training on Kakazan.
During her first meeting with Team 7, Michi shared some of her likes and dislikes, and reiterated her false goal of becoming Hokage. To test their qualifications, Kakashi gave the team a bell test, stating that whichever of the four takes one of the two bells on his person will officially become genin. Michi initially sat back and watched, carefully studying Kakashi's moves and strategies. Michi noticed the lunches, and hoping to draw out Kakashi, she threw a rock to draw Naruto's attention to them, then jumped onto Kakashi when he appeared, telling Naruto to grab both bells and then give her one. Before Naruto can react, however, Kakashi breaks free and bats her away. At lunchtime, Kakashi explains that the goal of the test was to use teamwork, to do together what none of them could do by themselves. He explains that each of them let down the team; Sakura was only concerned with Sasuke, Sasuke tried to take on Kakashi alone, Naruto rushed in without thinking, and Michi manipulated Naruto into serving as bait. Kakashi is persuaded to allow them to try again after lunch, but instructs the others not to feed Naruto. They feed him anyway, needing him in top-form if they're to work together. Kakashi sees this and, because they care more about the team than listening to his instructions, allows them all to pass.
After a series of uneventful D-rank missions, Naruto is able to secure a C-rank mission for Team 7: escorting Tazuna to the Land of Waves. Soon after leaving Konoha, they are attacked by the Demon Brothers. Naruto is paralyzed with fear, but Michi and Sasuke step in to disarm them and protect Tazuna until Kakashi can capture them. Tazuna confesses that assassins have been hired to kill him but that he couldn't afford the bodyguard detail he needs. Michi observes that this is a flaw in the mission classification system, to which Kakashi agrees. Although the mission is now A-rank in nature - far beyond the skill of genin - Team 7 decides to continue with it. As Naruto cuts his hand to rid himself of the poison, Michi marvels at his dedication and reaffirms her choice to be his rival. When they arrive in the Land of Waves and are confronted by Zabuza Momochi, Michi notices the puddle, and manages to get Sakura and Tazuna out of Zabuza's way, and she stays with them in order to protect Tazuna. After Sasuke and Naruto free Kakashi and Zabuza is seemingly killed by Haku, Team 7 escorts Tazuna back to his house.
Kakashi finds Zabuza's death suspicious and decides to train the team in case he returns. He has them perform the Tree Climbing Practice to improve their chakra control, which will help them against Zabuza. While Naruto asks for advice from Sakura, who herself mastered it from the start, Michi offers Sasuke help, and while he initially rejects it and calls her a "spoiled brat", he ultimately accepts, and he and Naruto begin to compete. While Naruto and Sasuke train, Kakashi pulls Michi aside and helps her with her ninjutsu. He also observes that she seems to be using a small amount of natural energy, and while he tries to help her fully develop her Earth Release: Green Bullet, but she is ultimately unable to master the technique. Michi also teaches herself the Shadow Clone technique by recalling and analyzing the times she'd seen Naruto perform it.
The next morning, Team 7 sans Naruto escort Tazuna to the bridge, where Haku and Zabuza attack. While Michi initially stays with Sakura and Tazuna, she becomes tired of sitting back and waiting, so she runs off and finally uses her Earth Release: Green Bullet to cut through Zabuza's mist. Zabuza takes her captive and threatens to kill her, but she reveals that she was a Shadow Clone, after which Kakashi sends his ninja hounds to hold Zabuza down. Kakashi applauds Michi's plan but scolds her for putting herself in danger. After Haku dies and Zabuza kills Gatō, she tells Zabuza that it is never too late to make the right choices. Later, when the group makes graves for the two, Sakura asks if it is truly the fate of ninja to be used as tools, to which Michi responds that even her grandfather, the great Third Hokage, is a tool, as he lives to serve the village and protect its people. She ponders whether or not this is a good thing or not as Team 7 leaves for home via Tazuna's newly-constructed Great Naruto Bridge.
Chūnin Exams[]
Team 7 resumes its series of unremarkable missions. One day, Konohamaru and his friends, Udon and Moegi, approach Michi, Naruto, and Sakura as they're returning from a mission, looking to for Naruto to "play ninja" with them. Naruto tries to get out of it by claiming he needs to train and Sakura overhears this and asks what "playing ninja" entails. Not knowing who she is, Konohamaru assumes she's Naruto's girlfriend, which Naruto doesn't deny. Sakura punches Naruto out of disgust and, when Konohamaru, Udon, and Moegi call her names for attacking him, she attacks them as well. While running for safety they collide with Kankurō and Temari, Sunagakure shinobi. Kankurō tries to beat up Konohamaru out of annoyance. Michi demands that Kankurō release her cousin. but she recognizes their headbands and hesitates to fight them out of fear of causing an incident with Suna. Konohamaru is saved by Sasuke Uchiha, and is disappointed by Michi and Naruto, especially in comparison to Sasuke and the Suna-nin. Michi also expresses anger at Sasuke and embarassment for failing to save Konohamaru, but he ignores her.
For their performance in the Land of Waves, however, Kakashi decides to enter them in the Chūnin Exams taking place in Konoha, which greatly excites Naruto. Because they've only recently graduated from the Academy, the team feel they must give strong showings to prove themselves. When they enter the exam hall, the team is met by Rock Lee, who challenges Sasuke to a fight; Naruto tries to attack Lee in jealousy, but is easily swept aside. Michi notes that Lee is older than them and likely far more skilled, which angers Sasuke. Lee also mentions that the other genin are not pleased that Team 7 has four members and see it as an unfair advantage. The fight is interrupted by Might Guy, and Michi teases Sasuke for his inability to beat Lee, causing him to call her a brat.
During the exam's first stage, the participating genin are given a written test, the goal of which is to cheat without getting caught. When Michi realizes she doesn't know any of the answers, she realizes that the true purpose of the test is to stealthily gather intel, she formulates a plan to cheat by flirting with the nearby Kiba Inuzuka, whom she suspects of cheating via his ninja hound Akamaru. Kiba, stunned and pleased that the Hokage's granddaughter is interested in him, shares his answers with her. Before the tenth question can be given, the genin are presented with the opportunity to forfeit; Michi considers doing so for the sake of her teammates, but when Naruto refuses to give up, she decides not to leave, as it's what her teammates want. The remaining genin agree, and they all pass the first stage.
For the second phase, teams enter the Forest of Death with the objective of obtaining a set of two scrolls, one of which they are given at the start. Soon after entering, Michi and Sasuke discover that what appears to be Naruto is an Ame-nin, Oboro, in disguise. They drive Oboro off and locate the real Naruto. To prevent this from happening again, Sasuke comes up with a complicated password that they'll share to confirm their identities in case they get separated. They are immediately attacked and, when they regroup, Naruto correctly recites the password. Knowing Naruto could never have remembered the password, Michi and Sasuke attack the impostor, who turns out to be Orochimaru. While Sasuke recognizes that Orochimaru is too strong for them, Michi urges him to keep fighting and protects him despite being utterly outmatched. Orochimaru begins to overpower her, and she is batted aside and falls unconscious. When Michi comes to, she witnesses Sasuke viciously attacking Team Dosu, and she holds him down while Sakura pleads for him to stop, causing the Cursed Seal to recede. The genin teams go their separate ways and Team 7 spends several days recuperating from their ordeals. On the last day of the second stage, they go looking for the second scroll that they still need. They are found by Team Oboro, but Naruto distracts them while the rest of Team 7 sneaks up behind them and knocks them out, taking their scroll.
With two scrolls, Team 7 is able to advance to the preliminary round. Before her fight with Shino Aburame, she speaks with Kakashi and tells him what Lee told her about the other teams resenting that Team 7 has four members, to which he jokingly replies that Naruto balances the advantage out. She rejoins the other's before Sasuke's match, and he declares that he wants to fight both Naruto and Michi, and sentiment which she returns. During Sasuke's first match, she watches on and observes as Sasuke uses the Lion Combo, noting its similarity to Rock Lee's Front Lotus.
The next match pitted Michi against Shino Aburame of Konohagakure's Team 8. Michi was quickly overwhelmed by Shino's insects, which creeped her out, but she managed to counter them by using the Earth Release: Hiding Like a Mole Technique she learned from Kakashi to avoid the bugs by moving underground. This quickly tired her out, however, and Shino began to gain the upper hand. Michi, desperate to avoid using her new transformation again, came up with a plan: she waited for Shino's bugs to swarm her, then unleashed her Earth Release: Bedrock Coffin with her Hiding Like a Mole Technique to crush the bugs while keeping herself from being crushed. Afterward, she was able to dispatch Shino with a Green Bullet, winning the match.
Michi watches the next matches carefully, gaining a feel for the strategies of the combatants in preparation for the finals. She takes an interest in Sakura's match in particular, gaining a newfound appreciation for her teammate, and she cheers for Naruto in his match against Kiba, something that hurts Kiba's feelings. She also watches Neji and Hinata's match, noting how the position of the Hyūga branch house created hatred and strife between those who should have been family. During Chōji and Dosu's match, she chatted with her uncle Asuma.
At the beginning of the one-month break period, Michi meets with Yamato, whom Hiruzen had asked to train her to use Wood Release. He marvels at her natural skill with it, and Enma observes that she's infusing her Wood Release with natural energy. He recommends that Hiruzen consider having Michi train at Kakazan, but he is reluctant. She also spent some time training with Enma, who teaches her how to release excess natural energy through her attacks, strengthening her taijutsu. During this time, she also meets Kiba again, and apologizes for using him during the exams, which he accepts after she promises to fight him one. He also proclaims that he loves a woman who can beat him up, to which Michi punches him on the head in annoyance.
When Michi hears Naruto is in the hospital, she runs to visit him and meets Shikamaru Nara there. The three then stop Gaara from killing Rock Lee in the next room, and they hear the story of Gaara's childhood. Michi's becomes angry at the way that the ninja world is, as she recognized that both Naruto and Gaara have had their lives ruined due to the beasts sealed within them. Might Guy then interferes to stop Gaara from killing them. In order to test their training, Michi and Naruto have a quick sparring match, and each is stunned by the growth of the other. They both promise not to hold back if they come up against each other in the finals.
During the match between Naruto and Neji, Michi remembered her anger at the nature of ninja. When Sasuke did not show up for his match with Gaara, Michi spoke with her grandfather and helped convince him to just move the match instead of disqualifying Sasuke, which Sakura was grateful for. The next match was supposed to be between Michi and Kankurō, but Kankurō forfeited the match, which meant Michi was declared the winner automatically, a fact that deeply displeased her given her special treatment as the Hokage's granddaughter. Michi, curious about Kankurō's withdrawal given her first encounter with him, went to the Kages' box to speak with her grandfather about it. As she entered, however, a smoke bomb was set off in the Kages' box. Kabuto, who was actually working for Orochimaru, used a genjutsu to put almost everybody in the crowd to sleep, and the Konoha Crush commenced.
Konoha Crush[]
When Michi comes to, she is being held hostage by the Fourth Kazekage, who threatens to kill her unless the Third Hokage obeys his commands. The three move to the roof, and while Anbu tries to rescue Michi and her grandfather, the Kazekage's minions erect the Four Violet Flames Formation to prevent anyone from getting in or out. As the Kazekage begins to mock the Third for getting so old and even going so far as to call him "sensei", the Third realizes that the Kazekage is actually Orochimaru in disguise, who sheds his disguise so that he can face his former master face to face. Michi recognizes Orochimaru from the Forest of Death, and begins formulating a plan to escape.
While her grandfather and Orochimaru talk, Michi focuses with all her might, using natural energy to manifest a shield of wood on her neck and hand, and then bites Orochimaru. Though he goes for her throat, it is now protected, and she punches him, dazing him long enough for her to run over to her grandfather. The Third Hokage then removes his Hokage outfit, revealing his fighting gear underneath. He states that he knows Orochimaru has come to kill him, but he will not allow his granddaughter to come to harm. When one of the tiles on the roof cracks, they begin their battle. When Orochimaru reanimates the First Hokage and Second Hokage, Michi prepares to fight, though the Third Hokage forbids her from doing so. When Michi tries to fight anyway, the Third summons a Shadow Clone to hold her back from the battle, which she tries in vain to escape from.
Michi is forced to watch the battle, and is disgusted by the revelation that Orochimaru has been occupying the bodies of others. She watches on as the Third is battered by the other Hokage, but her attempts to escape from the Shadow Clone are in vain. Michi watches as the souls of the other Hokage are sealed within the Shadow Clones, and as her grandfather exchanges blows with Orochimaru. Finally, as the Third is stabbed in the back with the Kusanagi sword, the Shadow Clone dispels, and Michi runs over as the Third explains how the seal works. The Third begs her to run, but she becomes angry at Orochimaru and engages him, this time using the skills she learned from Yamato and Enma to gain the upper hand. Because of the partial seal, Orochimaru is significantly weakened, and this enables Michi to overpower him.
The Third, desperate to end the battle and ensure Michi's safety, tells her that he believes in her strength and that she carries the Will of Fire. He tells her that he too realizes that the system of the ninja is flawed, but her reminds her of the shinobi below them, who are fighting to protect the village. He tells her that she has great potential and implores her to go to Kakazan for training, and to become the kind of ninja who changes the system. As Orochimaru moves to strike Michi, the Third seals his arms, preventing him from ever using jutsu, then tells Michi that he loves her as he falls over dead. Michi, saddened and enraged, fully transforms and utterly overwhelms the now-defenseless Orochimaru, who flees with the help of his subordinates. Michi lets out a scream of rage before she collapses.
With the Four Violet Flames Formation gone, the elite of Konoha find Michi and the Hokage's body. When she awakens in the hospital, Michi remembers the events of the attack, and she remembers that both the Third and Enma are dead. In grief, she breaks down into tears, but Naruto, Sakura, and Sasuke embrace her. Later, she is visited by Jizō, the new Monkey King after the death of Enma, who informs her that it is now his job to train her in preparation for drinking from the Forbidden Wellspring. She agrees to train with him, but she states that she would like to wait a while longer, in order to spend more time with her friends and family. Jizō capitulates, and Michi later attends the Third's funeral with the rest of Team 7, leaving his helmet on his grave and vowing to create a new ninja way.
Search for Tsunade[]
During her training with Jizō, Michi learns that Naruto is leaving with Jiraiya to search for Tsunade so she can become the Fifth Hokage. She insists on tagging along, hoping to meet the person who will succeed her grandfather. Jizō decides that training with Jiraiya might help her gain more knowledge of senjutsu, so he allows her to go, and he forms a contract with her so she can summon him. As they set out, she gets to know Jiraiya, and instantly pegs him as a perverted old man, much to her chagrin.
Eventually, the group stops at an inn in Shukuba Town, where Naruto is approached by Kisame Hoshigaki and Itachi Uchiha of Akatsuki, who intend to capture the Nine-Tails. Michi helps Naruto fight off Itachi and Kisame, but Sasuke then shows up and attacks Itachi. Though Jiraiya manages to drive off the Akatsuki members, Sasuke is left injured, and Might Guy arrives to take him back to Konoha.
To be ready for Akatsuki's next attack, Jiraiya decides to start teaching Naruto the Rasengan. He asks Michi if she'd like to learn it as well, much to Naruto's chagrin, but she decides instead to create her own jutsu. While Jiraiya helps Naruto, he also goes over some basics to help Michi develop her new technique, the Hamorebi. Michi gets disheartened seeing Naruto take to the Rasengan so quickly, but he and Jiraiya remind her that the Rasengan is a technique that has already been figured out, while the Hamorebi is brand-new. This cheers her up, and she continues to practice the technique.
Taking a break from training, the group eventually finds Tsunade and her assistant Shizune at a restaurant. When Tsunade refuses the offer to become Hokage and insults all who held the title, an angry Naruto challenged her to a fight and attacked her with an incomplete Rasengan, only to be easily defeated. Impressed by his progress, however, Tsunade makes a bet with Naruto: if he can master the Rasengan in a week, he gets the First Hokage's Necklace; if not, she gets his wallet. Tsunade also acknowledges Michi as a member of Izumo Clan, and while Michi asks her to reconsider, she refuses.
