Map of the Naruto: A Shinobi Story World.
Disclaimer: It does not feature every location and country in this page.
The Five Great Shinobi Countries (忍び五大国, Shinobi Godaikoku, English TV: Five Great Shinobi Nations) are the world’s five largest countries and the main focus of the Naruto universe and are divided equally on an unnamed continent to create balance in the Shinobi world. They are the Land of Earth in the Northwest, the Land of Lightning in the Northeast, the Land of Water in the East, the Land of Wind in the Southwest, and the Land of Fire in the center. The countries are named after the dominant chakra nature of each of the areas.[1][2] These superpowers are the major players in the politics and trade between the shinobi nations. They are the most powerful of all nations and each is led by an extremely powerful shinobi village. The Land of Earth has Iwagakure, the Land of Lightning has Kumogakure, the Land of Water has Kirigakure, the Land of Wind has Sunagakure, and the Land of Fire has Konohagakure. These five villages are the only ones to have a Kage as the village head.
Although the Five Great Shinobi Countries are equal enough in power and military strength to create a fairly stable balance of power, the Land of Fire is considered the most powerful and influential. Similarly, the Land of Fire’s shinobi village, Konohagakure, is considered the most powerful of all shinobi villages and Konoha’s Hokage has been considered to be the pinnacle of the shinobi world.
The five countries were allied together, along with minor shinobi villages and nations, to stop Tobi’s Eye of the Moon Plan in the Fourth Shinobi World War. After the war, as shown with Naruto as the Sixth Hokage, it appears that the five countries continued to have maintained a strong form of prosperous peace and fellowship between one another with both the present and retired Kage exemplifying them during their meeting. Following the aftermath of the Fourth Shinobi World War, the Five Great Shinobi Countries were able to finally put aside their differences and remain great allies, able to discuss anything without prejudice clouding their judgment, forming the Shinobi Union.
Land of Fire[]
Main article: Land of Fire (RW109)
The Land of Fire (火の国, Hi no Kuni, Fansub: Fire Country) is one of the largest and most powerful countries seen and is the home of the main characters of the series. The Land of Fire was the first country to be ruled by a ninja village, Konohagakure, a governmental structure other countries adopted shortly after. The Land of Fire is appropriately oriented towards the element of fire, typically having very bright and warm weather. While not the largest physical country, it has the largest hidden village. The Land of Fire has been involved in wars with the Land of Lightning, the Land of Earth, and the Land of Wind. In the quiet years that followed, the Land of Fire slowly recovered and became accustomed to peace. This was seen as a weakness by other countries, which had been working to increase their military power, and is one of the factors that brought about the Konoha Crush by Otogakure and Sunagakure.
On the border between the Land of Fire and the Land of Sound sits the Valley of the End, a large rift formed shortly after the founding of Konohagakure by the Shodai Hokage and Madara Uchiha.
Land of Wind[]
Main article: Land of Wind (RW109)
The Land of Wind (風の国, Kaze no Kuni) is one of the more prominent countries in the series. It is located to the southwest of the Land of Fire and borders the Land of Rivers and Amegakure. The country covers a vast realm but is significantly composed of deserts and thus has little productivity.[3] Because there is very little rainfall throughout the year, the people of the country live in villages built on one of the desert’s many oases. Despite the country’s extremely harsh environment, it has a large population. Although they have warred with each other in the past, the Land of Wind is now on good terms with the Land of Fire, with a great deal of trade going on between the two countries.
Land of Lightning[]
Main article: Land of Lightning (RW109)
The Land of Lightning (雷の国, Kaminari no Kuni) is located on a peninsula north-east of the Land of Fire and is one of the Five Great Shinobi Countries. In the center of the country are vast mountain ranges, whose many thunderstorms are said to give the country its name. From these mountain ranges, many rivers flow to the sea, creating a very crooked coastline that displays an impressive oceanic beauty. There are many hot springs located within the country. The country’s western border with the Land of Frost has a large desert.[4]
Land of Earth[]
Main article: Land of Earth (RW109)
The Land of Earth (土の国, Tsuchi no Kuni) has seen little attention in the series thus far. It is located northwest of the Land of Fire. The country is mostly comprised of desolate, rocky areas. The border of the Land of Earth runs along a rocky mountain range, blocking communication with other countries. The wind blowing from the north passes over these mountains, carrying small rocks from the Land of Earth to the surrounding countries. This famous natural phenomenon is called “Rock Rain” (岩雨, Gan'u).
Land of Water[]

The Land of Water (水の国, Mizu no Kuni) also known as the “Land of Mist” (霧の国, Kiri no Kuni).[5][6] It is composed of many islands, with each having its own unique traditions. In some places, like the area where Haku grew up, it is very cold and snows quite a bit. The nation is oriented towards the element of water.
