Raised Earth is a basic technique derived from the Active Yin Style. This fundamental technique is taught to students to help them learn how to mess with their opponent's mind and trick them into doing what they want. When used with the Shadow Sneak Technique, Raised Earth can give the user full control over how far they are to their opponent. It does this by giving the user the ability to bring themselves to a complete standstill instantly while they are moving at high speeds. To do so, the user plants their foot firmly on the ground while they are running and uses their chakra to grasp the ground beneath their feet. The chakra acts as a tether to hold them to that spot, which is how they stop immediately.
Advanced users like Otohime are not only able to stop instantly, but use their chakra to redirect the momentum elsewhere. This gives them the ability to perform the impossible feat of instantly changing directions while running or increasing the power of their strikes by using their chakra to redirect the kinetic energy to one of their limbs.
