By using the Resonating Echo Speaker located on their arm, the user is able to amplify the sound waves from arm movements to attack an opponent. By generating enough sound, the user can their chakra to redirect the waves in mid-air to their intended target. This will damage the victim's inner ear, rendered them to be off-balance and nauseous.

By sending the sound-waves through a solid object, this technique can be used to destroy it. This was demonstrated when Dosu was able to destroy a large tree trunk used by Sakura Haruno in a trap on contact. Also seen in Dosu's fight with Chōji Akimichi, the sound drill can also be directed through water weight with a similar effect. Therefore, the greater fat index an opponent has, the more they are affected by this; Chōji, using his Multi-Size Technique at the time, was instantly defeated.

Inoki is alternatively able utilize this technique through the use of his Sound Release, not needing to use the sound drill as a medium.
