Roji Hōki is a Chunin from Sunagakure and a member of Suna-ANBU feared as, Roji the Detonator.
Background[]

Shogi pieces
Roji was born into the Hoki clan within Sunagakure, a family of herbalists and medics who supplied the village with medicines and antidotes. Unlike most of his peers, who spent their time training or playing physical games, Roji was fascinated by games of strategy and deception—anything that required outthinking an opponent. From a young age, he was drawn to games like Shogi, Go, and card tricks. This love for games extended into his ninja training. Roji approached every mission, every fight, as if it were a puzzle to be solved or a game to be won. His instructors often remarked that he seemed to enjoy the thrill of outsmarting opponents more than the actual victory itself.

During the Third Shinobi War, Roji’s reputation as a master strategist was solidified during a mission sabotage Iwagakure. Tasked with crippling their supply lines, Roji and his team infiltrated under the cover of night, evading patrols and security barriers. Over the course of three days, he laid a complex network of explosive traps within the depot. When everything had been planted, Sabaku Arashi created a severe sandstorm. The sandstorm cut off Iwa supply to the river, forcing them toward the supply depot and into Roji's trap. When the enemy tried to resupply for their next assault, a single trigger from Roji set off a chain reaction that decimated their forces.
Personality[]

Roji plans his infiltration
Roji is calm and calculating, preferring to study his opponents and environments meticulously before making his move. Roji showed exceptional promise during his academy days, particularly in tactical planning and stealth operations. He values patience and efficiency, seeing combat as a chess game rather than a brawl.
Appearance[]
He wears the standard attire of a Sunagakure ninja including his black his turban-like head gear.
Abilities[]
Bukijutsu[]

Roji hurls an Explosive Tag Ball
His abilities primarily revolve around the use of heavy explosive artillery. Roji can combine explosive tags with his Fire Release to make for a devastating explosion. He is also highly skilled at setting traps. He uses explosive tags with great proficiency, often incorporating them into his traps, laying them all over the battlefield, then, manipulate them in such a way that he could defeat multiple enemies at once.
Intelligence[]
Roji excels at slipping behind enemy lines undetected. Using his mastery of stealth, he infiltrates enemy territories and lays explosive tags in key areas—chokepoints, supply caches, and escape routes. His traps are designed to cause maximum disruption, turning the environment itself into a weapon. Roji uses the terrain to his advantage, setting traps that funnel enemies into his explosive zones or trigger chain reactions. He has an uncanny ability to memorize the layout of an area and use it against his foes.
Taijutsu[]

Roji sticks an explosive tag on his opponent
In direct combat, Roji's approach is equally devious. During fast-paced taijutsu exchanges, he uses sleight-of-hand techniques to attach small, concealed explosive tags to his opponent's limbs. These tags are designed to detonate with a slight delay, forcing his enemies into a position where every move becomes a risk. Roji thrives on creating confusion and panic in his opponents.
Part I[]
Chūnin Exams[]

Roji maps out the arena
Roji was embedded in the exam arena days before the invasion. Roji was first seen watching the preliminary rounds. Disguised as a minor Suna official, he worked covertly to place explosive tags in key structural weak points within the arena. These traps were designed to detonate once the invasion began, causing confusion and limiting Konoha’s ability to organize their defenses.
Konoha Crush[]

Roji activated multiple explosive tags
When the signal for the invasion was given, Roji activated the explosive tags hidden in the arena’s pillars and supports. The resulting destruction caused portions of the arena to collapse, trapping many Konoha shinobi and civilians. The chaos allowed Sunagakure’s forces to move in unopposed initially, shifting the balance in their favor. Despite the destruction and chaos Roji helped create, the invasion ultimately failed due to the combined efforts of Konohagakure’s forces and the will of its people. Roji narrowly escaped capture, retreating with the remnants of Sunagakure’s forces as the tide of battle turned against them. He was later seen discovering the decomposed bodies of the Fourth Kazekage and his bodyguards, before realizing that they had all been tricked by Orochimaru.
