Hiramekarei (ヒラメカレイ) is one of the mystical swords of the Seven Ninja Swordsmen of the Mist. It has been passed down from generation to generation amongst the group’s members since the First Mizukage’s era.[2]
Appearance[]

Hiramekarei bandaged.
Hiramekarei features a wide, flat blade with two curved indentations near its base, creating a sort of cross-guard. Two handles are connected to one another by a short length of cord, earning it the title of “twinsword” (双刀, sōtō). The overall sword looks like a flounder fish in shape. When not in use, Hiramekarei is wrapped in bandages.
Abilities[]
Hiramekarei can store chakra. With the command “Hiramekarei Unleashing” (ヒラメカレイ解放, Hiramekarei Kaihō, Viz: Hiramekarei Release), the stored chakra is emitted from the holes at the tip of the blade[3] causing the bandages it is typically wrapped with to unravel. The chakra rapidly coats the sword and can be shaped into various weapons, such as a hammer or a longsword. The more chakra that is stored in Hiramekarei, the larger the size of the manifested weapon.[4] Chōjūrō demonstrated that the stored chakra can also be used to change Hiramekarei’s physical shape, expanding the blade many times its original size.
It can also create a large amount of light blue, fish bone-like crystals that can inflict great damage and restrain the target’s movements. Hiramekarei can also split into two swords, each with a single handle, and the feature allows for two different individuals to wield it at once.

Kabutowari (兜割, Literally meaning: Helmet Splitter) is one of the mystical swords of the Seven Ninja Swordsmen of Mist. It has been passed down from generation to generation amongst the group’s members since the First Mizukage’s era.[5]
Overview[]
The sword itself consists of a giant axe and hammer, linked end-to-end by a flat, thin, leatherlike rope, which together is referred to as a “bluntsword” (鈍刀, dontō) that is said to be able to break through any defense. Although the length of the cord means each weapon can be utilized individually, to cut and crush obstructions respectively, their true strength lies in their capability to be employed in conjunction with one another. When facing a particularly difficult or seemingly impenetrable defense, the wielder can first attack by striking with the axe before slamming the hammer downwards onto its blunt backside, thus using the blade like a wedge to drive straight through the offending obstacle and into the desired target located behind.[6] Jinin was able to use the hammer part of Kabutowari to create a powerful shockwave by slamming it into the ground.[7]

Kabutowari being used as a bluntsword.
Kabutowari was eventually lost to Kirigakure alongside five other blades. The sword is first seen when a reincarnated Mangetsu Hōzuki summons it from a scroll, where it is then returned to its respective wielder, Jinin Akebino. Sometime after the war, Kabutowari was returned to Kirigakure.[8]

Kiba (牙, Literally meaning: Fangs) is one of the mystical swords of the Seven Ninja Swordsmen of the Mist. It has been passed down from generation to generation amongst the group’s members since the First Mizukage’s era.[9]
History[]

Ameyuri wielding Kiba.
The swords were in possession of a previous unnamed member of the Seven Swordsmen during the Second Shinobi World War before his death at the hands of Might Duy. At some point, the swords were utilized by Mangetsu Hōzuki in his act of mastering all seven swords of the Seven Swordsmen before Ameyuri Ringo acquired Kiba. Kiri lost possession of the swords following her death at the hands of Kakashi Hatake in the Land of Whirlpools, being collected by Kabuto Yakushi for Orochimaru. At the beginning of the Fourth Shinobi World War, had the swords stored within a scroll along with four of the seven Mist swords, which a reincarnated Mangetsu possessed. When Orochimaru had him summoned alongside the reincarnated Seven Swordsmen of the Mist during the Fourth Shinobi World War, Mangetsu unsealed all the swords, leading to Kiba returning to Ameyuri’s possession.
After being trapped in a bottomless marsh, Ameyuri gives the blades to Omoi as a thank-you gift from their exciting battle.[10] After the war, Kiba was returned to Kirigakure and stored in a vault along with the rest of Seven Ninja Swordsmen swords with the goal of training a new generation.
Appearance[]

Kiba
Kiba is a pair of Taiji swords. Both have long, slim, and straight, double-edged blades. The blades also have an upward-curved bladed prong near the tip of one side of the blade and another one near the base of the blade’s other side. At their bases are smooth brown hilts with a round, grey tsuba. When not in use, they are kept wrapped in bandages.[11]
Abilities[]
The swords have been imbued with lightning, granting enhanced cutting power in a manner like the high-frequency vibrations of lightning-based chakra flow, increasing its penetrating power. It is this capability that has resulted in these “thunderswords” (雷刀, raitō) being claimed as the sharpest swords in existence.[12] Even without lightning, they are very dangerous in battle, able to be used in combination with agile spinning movements, sweeping through the targets while the user also rotates. This, combined with the jagged nature of the blades, allows for more damaging wounds inflicted.

Lightning chakra imbued into Kiba.
The user can transform and manipulate lightning freely, able to use their Lightning Release techniques without hand seals. They also boost the user’s attack power to the highest limit, which allows them to perform high-level Lightning Release techniques, and likewise requires only the smallest amount of chakra. These blades can channel the user’s own respective lightning techniques, or They can conduct natural lightning, able to launch it from the sky to strike anywhere within a large area. Likewise, if there is natural lightning to access, the user can battle continuously without tiring.
While meant to be used as a pair, the user can perform similarly with only a single blade. They can also be connected at the hilts to form a larger double-bladed sword, increasing its versatility as a weapon. They can perform various powerful techniques, such as manipulating the blades from afar, leaving their hands free while attacking the opponent in different directions simultaneously. Even from afar, the user can channel chakra into the blades, amplifying them.[13]

Kubikiribōchō (首斬り包丁, Viz: Executioner’s Blade, Literally meaning: Decapitating Carving Knife) is one of the mystical sword renowned as “seversword” (断刀, dantō). Like the other weapons belonging to the Seven Ninja Swordsmen of the Mist, the sword has been passed down from generation to generation amongst the group’s members since the First Mizukage’s era.[14]
History[]
Appearance[]

The holes on the blade being used.
Kubikiribōchō is a large broadsword, as tall as a full-grown man, shaped like a butcher knife. The blade has two cutouts, a circle close to the top and a semi-circular one nearer to the handle, the former of which aptly fits the sword’s purpose of decapitation.[15] The latter notch allows a strap to be wrapped around the weapon, making it easier for the user to carry. Its extremely long handle is also detachable to further aid transportation and then reattached when required for combat.[16]
Abilities[]

The sword regenerating.
Like the other weapons employed by the Seven Ninja Swordsmen of the Mist, the sword possesses a unique power, this being its ability to reform itself using the iron harvested from the blood of its victims. This regenerative process takes place almost instantaneously and is capable of bringing the weapon back to its original condition no matter how severe the damage is, from a simple chip or nick to a complete separation of over half the blade. The sword also possesses high durability and is quite strong, able to cut through almost anything; however, due to its considerable weight, only especially strong and resilient individuals can handle wielding it for long durations; otherwise, they will tire quickly.

Nuibari[]

Nuibari (縫い針, Literally meaning: Sewing Needle) is one of the mystical swords of the Seven Ninja Swordsmen of the Mist. It has been passed down from generation to generation amongst the group’s members since the First Mizukage’s era.[17]
Overview[]
The blade itself assumes the form of a narrow “longsword” (長刀, chōtō) that greatly resembles a large needle, with a long length of thin wire, mirroring thread, tied through the eye located at the base of its hilt. This sword is said to possess the ability to pierce all and stitch them together, demonstrated through its ability to effortlessly penetrate multiple targets in a single thrust, and then quite literally stitch them together in substantial bundles by simply pulling the attached wire taut. A capable user can even throw the sword with the intent of piercing a line of multiple enemies, before catching the needle at the other side and repeating the process at different angles, in order to create knots of corpses with the wire passing through the entirety, effectively creating bundles of bodies at various points along the length of the thread. Nuibari’s wires can also bind chakra, stopping jutsu from going through them.[18]
Nuibari was eventually lost to Kirigakure alongside five other blades. The sword is first seen when a reincarnated Mangetsu Hōzuki summons it from a scroll, where it is then returned to Kushimaru, and last seen in the anime when Kushimaru is sealed. Sometime after the war, Nuibari was returned to Kirigakure.[19]

Samehada[]
Samehada (鮫肌, Literally meaning: Shark Skin) is a sentient the mystical sword utilized by the Seven Ninja Swordsmen of the Mist. It is regarded as the most terrifying out of all the Seven Ninja Swordsmen’s blades.[20]
History[]
Passed down from generation to generation since the First Mizukage’s era in Kirigakure,[21] Samehada was eventually acquired by Fuguki Suikazan, and at some point, the sword was utilized by Mangetsu Hōzuki in his act of mastering all seven swords of the Seven Swordsmen. Upon Fuguki being killed by his subordinate, Kisame Hoshigaki, he took the sword and joined the Seven Ninja Swordsmen. For the duration of Samehada being in his possession, their chakra signatures eventually became identical, and Kisame became regarded as the “Monster of the Hidden Mist” (霧隠れの怪人, Kirigakure no Kaijin, Scourge of the Hidden Mist).[22] When Kisame became a missing-nin, he took Samehada with him.

Kisame hiding within Samehada.
During Kisame’s initial fight with Killer B, Samehada grew fond of the taste of B’s particular chakra and ultimately betrayed Kisame, (who was later revealed to be one of White Zetsu’s clones in disguise), by returning some of the chakra it had previously absorbed from B during their battle and even shielded him from his attacks. Meanwhile, the real Kisame was hiding within Samehada to infiltrate Kumogakure as a spy before using it to absorb B’s chakra when his presence was exposed.
After Kisame’s death, Samehada mourns him, not only bestowing the blade with even more lifelike characteristics but also standing as a testament to the bond shared between the two. Now in B’s possession, Samehada kept five of his Supervibrato Lightning Release Swords within it to better assist him during the events of the Fourth Shinobi World War.[23] After the war, Samehada was now back in the possession of Kirigakure.
Appearance[]
Samehada partially wrapped in bandages.
Samehada is a large sword, roughly as tall as a full-grown man and comparable in size to the Kubikiribōchō. Though usually wrapped in bandages, Samehada’s construction is atypical in that its actual blade is comprised of a series of downward-facing scales running along the entirety of its length until its hilt, at the base of which is a small skull. Samehada grows larger in proportion to the amount of chakra it absorbs, causing its scales to become so long that they resemble shark fins, and its mouth, located at the tip of the blade, to become even more pronounced with visible teeth. Keeping Samehada wrapped in bandages helps to inhibit this growth to a certain extent.
Sentience[]

Samehada refusing to let White Zetsu wield itself.
Samehada is unique for being a sentient weapon that gains nourishment from the chakra of others and, as such, the blade is at its happiest when engorged with chakra that possesses both a distinctive and pleasant flavor. It enjoys Killer B’s chakra since, according to Kisame, it tastes like an octopus; however, it has shown displeasure towards fire-natured chakra, stating that — according to B — it is far too hot. Being capable of conscious thought, Samehada chooses its own user, an exclusive process that has often resulted in it being thought of as notoriously picky. If someone it disapproves of attempts to wield it, spikes protrude from the handle in order to force them to release their grasp, at which point Samehada will make efforts to return to its chosen owner. To further exemplify it being a sentient being, it was able to mourn Kisame’s death.
Abilities[]

Samehada slicing through Fire Release.
As the blade is made up of scales, it inflicts injuries through shredding or shaving what it comes into contact with, rather than just cutting the object in question. This flaying effect is similar to a shark’s skin, hence the sword’s name. While it ordinarily remains rigid, Samehada’s hilt is able to stretch and bend to a great extent, allowing the weapon to be used like a flail.[24] To supplement the blade’s offensive capabilities, it is able to extend its scales to spikes, and protrude spikes from its handle. Samehada can also be used in conjuncture with Water Release, leading to the sword glowing with chakra.[25]

Samehada enlarging as a result of absorbing chakra.
Samehada shares a symbiotic relationship with its wielder, similar to that of the kikaichū. Although it continually consumes the chakra of its owner, its largest meals come from fights, where it absorbs the chakra of the opponent by slicing through it, preventing them from performing the technique in question.[26][27] This is particularly useful when fighting jinchūriki, as Samehada can quickly deplete their large chakra supplies and even remove their respective chakra cloaks, illustrated when Killer B lost up to six tails’ worth of tailed beast chakra at once while partially transforming. In fact, although B came into contact with the blade several times in his battle against Kisame, the sword drained nearly all of his chakra, causing the latter to resort solely on Gyūki’s.[28] Samehada, however, seems to be unable to automatically absorb ambient chakra, as in all instances where it has absorbed chakra are when either the opponent had a visible aura around them or when direct physical contact had already been established.[29][30] Samehada is even capable of slicing through chakra that is transformed.[31] The more chakra it absorbs, the larger it can become. Due to its voracious appetite, Samehada is drawn to those with large chakra supplies, allowing it to be used as a quasi-sensor.

Samehada fused with Kisame.
While the ability to absorb chakra is useful in defeating opponents, it is also beneficial to the user as well. Samehada can transfer the chakra it has absorbed to the wielder by partially fusing with them, so it can be used to either revitalize the wielder’s chakra and stamina or instantly heal even fatal injuries. This makes the user of this sword extremely difficult to defeat conventionally. A wielder such as Kisame can take this fusion one step further by completely merging with Samehada. Doing so causes him to become much more sharklike in appearance, growing fins and webbed hands that allow him to move through water with considerable ease. Kisame also receives some of Samehada’s abilities while in this form, such as being able to extend spikes from his body for offense, absorbing chakra when others come into direct contact with him, as well as the ability to track chakra, and avoiding sensors.[32]

Shibuki (飛沫, Literally meaning: Splash) is one of the mystical swords of the Seven Ninja Swordsmen of the Mist. It has been passed down from generation to generation amongst the group’s members since the First Mizukage’s era.[33]
Overview[]

Shibuki’s power.
The blade utilizes various explosive tags, contained within a substantial scroll, to incorporate explosions into the user’s own swordsmanship, earning it the title of “blastsword” (爆刀, bakutō). The sword itself features two distinct sides, with a narrow cutting edge located down the entirety of one length and a wide platform section on the other. The scroll unrolls along this latter side, sliding downwards and resting atop its surface to form an individual segment comprised from numerous explosive tags, which separates from the remainder upon detonation. Only once the desired opponent comes into contact with the platform do the explosive tags finally ignite and then detach, providing a small opportunity for the user to escape the devastating blast radius, while simultaneously compensating for any resultant recoil. The sword can “reload” another segment of tags onto the platform automatically after each strike.

The Fourth Division vs. Jinpachi Munashi.
Shibuki was eventually lost to Kirigakure alongside five other blades. The sword is first seen when a reincarnated Mangetsu Hōzuki summons it from a scroll, where it is then returned to its respective wielder, Jinpachi Munashi, and last seen when Jinpachi is sealed. Sometime after the war, Shibuki was returned to Kirigakure.[34]

Trivia[]
- Hiramekarei is the only one of the seven swords not to have a direct kanji translation, due to its name being written in katakana.
- Both hirame and karei are Japanese names for species of flounder. The flounders with their eyes on the left side of their body are called hirame (鮃, 平目, 比目魚), while those with their eyes on the right side are called karei (鰈). Befitting its name, Hiramekarei is shaped like these fish.
- When the previous generation of the Seven Swordsmen are reincarnated, only Mangetsu Hōzuki and Fuguki Suikazan do not have their swords as both Hiramekarei and Samehada now have modern owners. Fuguki is known to have been the wielder of Samehada, and though Mangetsu was famously capable of wielding all seven swords, it is presumed he would have primarily wielded the last remaining sword, Hiramekarei.
- Mangetsu Hōzuki has been the only member of the Seven Ninja Swordsmen to master all seven of these mystical swords, including Samehada whose notoriously picky.
- The Kiba is the first anime-only weapon to be adapted into the manga; later, their début wielder, Raiga Kurosuki, was also adapted into the manga. Also, during its original appearance in the anime with Raiga, the swords were depicted as a ninjatō. The blades were medium-length and single-edged, with no tsuba. Its later depictions in the anime, since wielded by Ameyuri, were redesigned to remain consistent with the manga’s design.
- While the nature of their abilities is fundamentally the same in their manga début, it has yet to be seen if they can be connected.
- In the anime, although Omoi receives the swords from Ameyuri, he was never seen wielding or even carrying them afterward.[35]
- Kiba’s name and appearance are most likely based off of an old and rare style of Chinese sword of the same appearance and name.
- In the manga, Suigetsu simply retrieves Kubikiribōchō from Zabuza’s grave, In the anime, however, sometime after Zabuza’s death, the sword was stolen by Tenzen Daikoku: a crime boss who lost many men to the blade. It was then kept as a trophy and was used by one of his bodyguards until Suigetsu forcefully took it.
- In the anime, Kubikiribōchō weighs about 66 lbs.[36]
