Shōtōren is a kekkei mōra (血継網羅, Literally meaning: Bloodline Encompassing) native to Ōtakeshiki Ōtsutsuki. However, Ōtakeshiki gifted the manipulation portion of this ability to his lover, Suzuka Gozen. As such, he and his successor can only sense emotions.

Usage

Bearers of this kekkei mōra are able to sense the emotions of others, manipulate emotions to empower themselves or others by converting them into dark chakra, and bring others under their control through the influence of dark chakra and their own negativity. To acheive the power to mold this chakra and control it, the user must first confront their inner, dark self and overcome it.

Sensing

At base ability, the user is able to sense the entire emotional spectrum of people, animals, and other creatures; anger, avarice, courage, despair, fear, hatred, hope, there is nothing the user cannot detect. Ōtakeshiki was so competent with this ability that he could even detect lies. Emotions are categorized under negative or positive and as such, the two have unique colorations that the user can visually see. Negative emotions are often seen as a dark and shadowy aura whereas positive emotions have a range of bright, colorful auras.

Manipulation

Users are able to manipulate the emotions of others or their own by inducing, negating, even outright inverting them. This ability requires a certain amount of skill to make drastic changes, however, it is much easier to influence pre-existing emotions. Only with negative emotions of the heart can the user can augment what their victim is feeling (or directly change it to another) and transmute it into dark chakra, which in turn creates a positive feedback loop. The more negativity the victim experiences, the more dark chakra is molded. As a result, the victim becomes stronger but completely under the control of the user and driven only by their current emotion. The bearer is also able to use this same process to strengthen themselves - before Ōtakeshiki forfeited this ability, he was known for his seemingly boundless bloodlust while in his monstrous Sage Transformation.

Positive emotions, while unable to be molded into dark chakra, can be quite useful as induced emotions such as great courage can empower allies against all odds or calm others by emitting an aura of peaceful intent.

Trivia

• This technique is based on Ōtakemaru's, one of the Great Three Evil Yōkai of Japan, passionate yearning for Suzuka Gozen's love. It is said in legend that his three holy swords are what granted him his many abilities: detection and manipulation of emotions and the molding of dark chakra is Shōtōren. This sword was given to Suzuka Gozen; however, he only gave her a mere portion of its true power.
• Dark chakra is similar to Negative chakra as they both feed off negative emotions, however, Dark chakra has been portrayed as much more powerful and refined.
