Shiranui Hayakawa (早川不知火, Hayakawa Shiranui) is a missing-nin from Takigakure and a member of the criminal organisation Akatsuki. Formerly a shinobi of Takigakure and a member of the prestigious Hayakawa Clan, she defected from her village after stealing the clan’s treasured heirloom, the Sword of the Thunder God, and murdering several of her clansmen. As a member of the Akatsuki, she is partnered with Kisame Hoshigaki, whom she refers to as her husband, though the feeling is not mutual. She is the biological mother of Shizuma Hoshigaki...
History[]
Prologue[]
Born into the prestigious Hayakawa Clan of Takigakure, a clan renowned for their exceptional medical ninjutsu skills, Shiranui Hayakawa was initially groomed to follow in her family's footsteps. However, her selfish nature and lack of interest in medical practice made her ill-suited for the role. Instead, she excelled in combat, driven by an obsession with her stature and a desire to outshine others. Her combat skills were unparalleled, and she quickly rose through the ranks, achieving the rank of Jōnin at the age of 18. Despite her success, Shiranui soon grew tired of the rigors of active service. She began to indulge in extravagant parties and multiple marriages, going through at least seven husbands before leaving the village. Her behavior caused significant strain on her family, who tried to discipline her but were met with resistance. Shiranui often blamed her father for being a failure despite being the older brother of the clan head, having been skipped over in favour of the younger, more talented one, which cut her off from the line of succession. She used this to emotionally blackmail her parents, demanding more and more from them.
As Shiranui entered her 20s, her mother's attempts to discipline her continued to fail. Shiranui argued that there was no point in applying herself if there were no greater positions for her to attain. The village head and clan leader positions were out of her reach, and she saw no reason to strive for anything less. Her parents, desperate to see her redeem herself, encouraged her to rejoin active service and help train the future heiress of the clan. However, Shiranui's behavior remained unchanged, and the main family eventually stepped in, cutting her off from their fortune. This move was intended to force her to reconsider her actions and find a path to redemption. Determined to reclaim her opulent lifestyle, Shiranui learned of the Sword of the Thunder God, a legendary heirloom crafted by a wandering Hayakawa ancestor who served Konohagakure. This ancestor, a skilled weaponsmith, had created the sword and gifted it to the Second Hokage, Tobirama Senju, before dying alongside him in battle. Recognising the sword's significance as a gift meant solely for Tobirama, Tsunade later returned it to the Hayakawa Clan to honor its legacy and prevent its misuse.
Seeing the sword as her ticket to a life of luxury, Shiranui stole it, murdering several clansmen in the process and fleeing Takigakure as a missing-nin. Finding it too troublesome to sell the sword, she seized control of a small town, using the blade's Lightning Release power to vaporise opposition and sustain her opulent ways. Her strength drew the attention of the Akatsuki, who recruited her and paired her with Kisame Hoshigaki. Shiranui developed a one-sided romantic obsession with Kisame, declaring him her husband, which he found amusing and tolerated as they carried out Akatsuki missions together...
Personality[]
Shiranui is said to be a prideful and self-indulgent person. As the only child of a renowned branch family of the Hayakawa Clan, she was born with high potential but quickly grew to have great contempt for what her clan had planned for her. With no interest in the medical ninjutsu that the clan was renowned for, Shiranui instead opted for close-range combat and showed great proficiency in offensive ninjutsu and swordsmanship, something that would later bore her too, and she’d drop out of the shinobi system a few months after becoming a jōnin. As a fad, she’d take up the family practice around the time she was with her third husband, something that he himself was passionate about, which the girl didn’t think was a coincidence and attributed to her father trying to softly nudge her toward the medical field. Despite being in her 20s, she’d continue to act out and only learned self-healing and more obscene jutsu, which had little to do with acts outside the bedroom, something that angered her family a lot as she displayed remarkable talent in the field.
It should be to no one’s surprise that she showcased signs of selfishness and obstinacy from the early stages in life and remained in constant clashes with her clan elders and her parents over how she lived, as well as against conforming to their expectations. She resented her father's position for being outside the clan’s direct line of succession, her father being the older, less talented sibling of the clan head at the time, and this was largely abused by her to justify her rebellious behavior and discontentment. Shiranui's desire was less for duty and more for opulence and personal status, and she had little concern for the responsibilities that came with being any sort of leader; this stemmed from both the position of clan head and village head being well outside what her bloodline allowed. With this in mind, she’d instead indulge in whatever meagre privileges her blood allowed, almost as a mockery of the role she was meant to play.
Her behavior grew more and more erratic and combative with time. She trudged her way through a number of marriages, each failing because of her own difficult personality and the attitude of the noblemen she was matched with, as this went on her hedonistic lifestyle would merely escalate, which made matchmaking from the village a bit difficult for her father as rumours spread through the streets like wild fire. Her father, who was trying to make up for their lower status, as she had a strained relationship with her family, approached his brother for help, and he cut her off as tough love, instead of helping this just worsened her relationship with the clan as a whole. Being cut off financially meant that she could indulge her vices no longer, and symbolised in her eyes, being cut off from whatever meagre benefit her blood gave her. Instead of working to rebuild her family’s trust, she reacted by stealing the clan heirloom, the Sword of the Thunder God, and killing several members of her own clan in the process.
As a member of the Akatsuki, Shiranui brings along a dramatic and obsessive nature, particularly towards her partner Kisame, whom she calls her husband even though he refuses to acknowledge her. While her behavior appears strange, she is highly intelligent and calculating and has been noted to be exceptionally violent when angry. Her obsession with status, power, and appearance continues to influence her decisions, making her a deadly but volatile individual.
