Speed Mirage (速度蜃気楼, Sokudo shinkirō) is a technique that blends ninjutsu and combat skill together in order to produce a series of afterimages.

Overview[]

Fuka speed mirage

Fuka moving back and forth with body flicker to create a speed mirage.

By using his naturally high-speed in combination with the Body Flicker Technique, Shūrin can travel so swiftly that it leaves several afterimages in its wake. These 'speed clones' are more effective when used over a shorter distance, as it can fool the opponent(s) into thinking that the user has not moved at all. Since this is not a demonstration of just raw speed and is a ninjutsu, these clones are somewhat capable of movement, though they instantly fade away if they or something makes contact with them. Shūrin created this technique right after graduating from Ninja Academy and as such, was able to impress both his fellow genin teammates and teacher, Katoku Hatake, by creating around six clones by moving in a zigzag pattern in order to distract Katoku during the bell test. While indistinguishable without the use of a dōjutsu, even without making contact with something, these clones do not last for very long. However, as an ANBU Captain, not only did Shūrin demonstrate the ability to form twenty of such momentum based clones but was also able to extend their duration by a few seconds. This technique is commonly used to either dodge an incoming attack or create an opening for an actual attack.

It is hinted by Shūrin that a deeper understanding of body-flicker is required along with the skill, to execute partial or isolated flickers, that can be used to instantly move one's limb in order to create a successful speed mirage of it.

Trivia[]

  • With constant training, Shūrin was able to increase his combat speed far beyond his normal travel-speed and as such, when combined with a partial-body flicker, is able to 'clone' his limbs, while striking or countering an attack.
    • This strategy is used by him in close quarters combat to confuse the opponent and make them unable to defend against his attacks.
  • Initially, these speed mirages or speed clones would not last longer than a single second but with time and practice, Shūrin was able to extend this duration to about six seconds, when using a full-body flicker.
  • Fuka Kenizen has also shown the ability to use this technique but with limited success.
