Tōji (とおじ, Tōji) is a jōnin-level shinobi from Sunagakure. He was also the leader of Team Tōji for a period of time until he returned to the Counter-Terrorism Division, now as commander.

Background[]

In Sunagakure, during the regime of the Fourth Kazekage, Rasa, Tōji was born—the son of two chunin-ranked shinobi who were not particularly promising. The boy was rigorously trained in Suna's main techniques until the Academy was founded by Gaara during his youth. Despite being a student with good grades and enviable physical vigor, Tōji had no traits that made him a remarkable shinobi. Without unique secret techniques or a kekkei genkai, the boy seemed destined to be a competent ninja, yet one who would not stand out from the rest.

Personality[]

As analyzed by Kankurō, Tōji is an extremely methodical shinobi in battle, favoring meticulous planning over improvisation. His comrades in the Counter-Terrorism Division often remark that Tōji is more likely to spend days imagining countless possible scenarios than risk venturing into the unknown. Having endured a life filled with rigorous training, Tōji became highly disciplined and extremely loyal to Sunagakure — traits that Gaara took note of. For a time, Gaara harbored suspicions that Tōji might pose a threat to him due to his abilities that could neutralize the Kazekage’s Magnet Release. Tōji also displayed the capacity to become intensely enthusiastic and even obsessive about subjects that fascinate him, such as when he began studying copper powder. Despite never seeking greatness, Tōji has always desired recognition and success in the tasks assigned to him.

When Tōji became the sensei of his own genin team, he initially felt uncomfortable as he was not accustomed to dealing with children. As a result, he came across as stern and pragmatic in his decisions, often clashing with Shinki, who believed himself superior to the rest of the team. Although he seemed distant with the genin at first, this was merely a methodology he adopted to earn their respect. Once this phase was complete, Tōji revealed himself to be empathetic toward his three genin, and the more he trained them, the prouder he became of each one. He is also highly resolute, as shown when he agreed to leave his team so that Shinki could grow as a chūnin. He stated that it is the duty of a good teacher to know when it is time to let their students stand on their own rather than clinging to them out of mere attachment.

While interacting with more experienced shinobi, Tōji is highly respectful, particularly when dealing with the Kazekage and the Suna Council. He also demonstrates empathy toward shinobi from the other Five Great Shinobi Countries.

Appearance[]

Toji full body

Tōji is a tall man with tanned skin who covers much of his head with bandages, some of which extend beneath his dark brown forehead protector and covers part of his right ear. He wears Sunagakure’s standard flak jacket and uniform, enhanced with a copper armor that protects his shoulders, stomach, arms, and ankles during battles, paired with black sandals. His eyes are framed by red markings shaped like arcs, connected by a line that crosses horizontally over the bridge of his nose.

Abilities[]

Chakra and Physical Prowess[]

Tōji possesses large chakra reserves and, more importantly, exceptional control over it. After all, to control the copper powder, he needs to infuse his chakra into the powder so it is completely absorbed. Through this process, Tōji can manipulate and shape it into any weapon he desires. This level of control has made him the most proficient at chakra control Kankurō has ever witnessed during his entire time leading the Counter-Terrorism Division. Additionally, due to the amount of copper he carries, Tōji is an athletic and strong man, regularly exercising to maintain mobility even when his uniform is reinforced with his copper armor. Despite many of his techniques being long-range, he is also confident in his taijutsu abilities. He is highly skilled with various weapons, as his copper can be shaped into any form he requires.

Ninjutsu[]

Tōji's nature transformations include Earth, Lightning, and Wind Release, the latter of which he often mixes with his copper in order to increase its speed and coverage area.

Copper Powder Manipulation[]

TojivsShinki

The control over the copper powder demands more concentration from Tōji and, above all, a greater chakra expenditure compared to Gaara’s sand or Shinki’s iron sand. Unlike the two of them, all of his manipulation relies on infusing his chakra into the copper to alter its various properties, such as malleability and electromagnetic forces. For this reason, unless he is in extreme situations, Tōji typically avoids summoning large waves of copper powder as Gaara, for instance, does with his sand.

Due to this level of control and its infusion with Lightning Release, Tōji can defend himself from attacks that use magnets and magnetism as their foundation by enclosing himself within a copper cage that deflects such attacks. Tōji is also capable of shaping his copper powder into various sizes and forms for both offensive and defensive purposes. Additionally, he can create perfect clones of himself using the copper powder. His ultimate defensive and offensive technique is the Guard of Jōmon. By shaping all the copper particles around him, Tōji forms a shield in the shape of an ancient face and a durable spear. These not only offer exceptional strength against attacks but are also highly effective at absorbing heavy impacts and heat while repelling electrical and magnetic assaults.

Intelligence[]

Tōji is extremely perceptive and strategic, capable of devising numerous scenarios for his missions and battles even before stepping into the field. Since childhood, he has been highly studious and creative, managing to develop a technique that could nullify iron sand with relative ease by relying on physical concepts—making him a standout within the village.

Blank Period[]

Gaara Hiden: A Sandstorm Mirage[]

When Sunagakure faced attacks from a terrorist cell of missing-nin from Ishigakure, one of the key terrorists was Kajūra. Using his Kekkei Genkai, the Magnet Release, Kajūra controlled iron sand through electromagnetism to create a giant version of his body. At that time, Tōji was still a genin, but upon learning about the attack on the village — countered by the Counter-Terrorism Division led by Kankurō — he became obsessed with discovering a way to combat magnetism users, particularly those who manipulated iron sand. He was already familiar with the stories of the Third Kazekage, the creator of this method, and how his powers were exploited for evil by the missing-nin Sasori.

Tōji buried himself in training and studies until he managed to develop a technique capable of countering this Kekkei Genkai. It was then that he finally mastered the natural enemy of iron sand: copper powder.

After mastering this technique, Tōji not only became a formidable opponent, even against Gaara’s sand—which now also contained magnetic particles mixed into it—but also began to stand out in Suna. However, due to his techniques being considered "the natural enemies of the Kazekage's sand," suspicions arose about how dangerous he could potentially be to Gaara.

New Era: Part I[]

When he became a jōnin, now a prominent shinobi in the village, Tōji was summoned to join the Counter-Terrorism Division. However, this invitation was, in truth, an opportunity for Kankurō to keep a close eye on Tōji’s true intentions and determine whether or not he posed a threat to Gaara’s authority. Over time, however, and through Tōji’s success in various missions, both Kankurō and Gaara realized that Tōji was not driven by an ambition to usurp Gaara’s position. Instead, his true motivation was to become a worthy opponent to anyone who dared to use the secret powers of Sunagakure against the village.

Team toji

Team Tōji's first meeting at Sunagakure.

Because of Tōji's loyalty and abilities, it became clear to Gaara that he was the ideal person to become the mentor for his adopted son, Shinki. After all, Shinki was a prodigy and had begun arrogantly believing that no challenge could surpass his abilities with iron sand. By appointing Tōji as his sensei, Gaara aimed to teach his son that in the shinobi world, there will always be someone capable of easily countering our greatest strengths. This lesson was something Gaara himself had learned as a genin when he took his first punch from Rock Lee. Initially, Tōji felt pressured by the Kazekage's request, unsure if he could handle working with children after so many years of adhering to the rigorous training and strict routines of the Counter-Terrorism Division. Nevertheless, he accepted the task of training Shinki, Araya, and Yodo.

In the team's initial meetings, the genin showed a clear lack of cohesion. Shinki was extremely arrogant, Araya was shy to the point of being afraid of his own shadow, and Yodo was simply disinterested in the group's interactions. Tōji faced significant challenges in training them, particularly with Shinki, who believed there was nothing left for him to learn from his sensei, convinced he had already mastered everything he needed from his father and uncle. Tōji then challenged Shinki to a battle, demonstrating the superiority of his copper technique against Shinki's iron sand. This awakened the exact emotion Gaara had hoped for—fear. It was the fear Gaara himself had felt when facing Lee and later Naruto that made him feel truly human for the first time in years, ultimately enabling him to become a better shinobi and a better man.

Versus Momoshiki Arc[]

Toji ChuninExam

A copper clone sent by Tōji congratulated Shinki for his victory.

When Tōji finally earned the trust of his genin trio, he intensified their training to foster bonds of camaraderie among them, preparing them for the upcoming Chūnin Exams to be held in Konohagakure. Proud of his team's performance during the early stages of the Chūnin Exams, Tōji attended the final round in Konoha, watching from the special guest box reserved for visitors from the Land of Wind. He even sent one of his clones at the backstage to personally congratulate Shinki after his victory over Chōchō Akimichi. As Yodo and Araya were eliminated, Tōji clung to the belief that Shinki would emerge as the champion, even though he would face Sarada and Boruto alone. It is said that when Boruto was caught cheating, Tōji lost his usual composure, shouting that his pupil deserved to be declared the true champion of the Chūnin Exams.

When Momoshiki Ōtsutsuki and Kinshiki Ōtsutsuki invaded the stadium and attacked everyone present, Tōji used his copper powder to create protective barriers that saved many lives, but he felt extremely guilty for not being by Gaara's side when he faced Urashiki with Chōjūrō.

One-Tail Escort Arc[]

TojivsUrashiki

Tōji fighting Urashiki.

Tōji was the first to detect the invasion of Urashiki Ōtsutsuki into Sunagakure, seeking the whereabouts of Shukaku in order to steal its chakra. Knowing of Gaara's mission to assist Sasuke Uchiha, Tōji communicated with Kankuro and his genin team to meet him at Shukaku's secret location to help him protect the Tailed Beast. To buy time until his allies arrived, Tōji used copper power barriers to reinforce Shukaku's defenses and attacked Urashiki with all his might. At that moment, the Ōtsutsuki became interested in Tōji's powers and tried to steal his chakra as well to imitate him, since the portion of chakra he had stolen from Gaara was very small.

Urashiki Toji Chakra

When his team arrived with Kankurō, Gaara, Sasuke, and two more medical-nin, Tōji was already exhausted from his battle. With their help, the battle against Urashiki turned in favor of the Sunagakure shinobi, until Urashiki increased his power and things got out of control. Protecting Yodo, Araya and Shukaku, Tōji put himself in front of Urashiki's hook, using his body as a shield so that the Tailed Beast's chakra would not be stolen, thus allowing the enemy to extract his own chakra and what remained of his energy. As the battle extended beyond the desert, Tōji had to stay behind to receive treatment from the medical-nin after fighting bravely.

Kara Actuation Arc[]

Toji kazekageoffice

Tōji acknowledging that Shinki deserved to become a chūnin.

Some time after Deepa's attack, Tōji was summoned by the Kazekage and his advisors to report on his team's performance. Tōji praised the team’s achievements, highlighting the growth of Araya and Yodo, and appealed for the village to recognize Shinki as a chūnin based on his own merits—both for his efforts against Urashiki and his performance in the Chūnin Exams in Konoha. Acknowledging that Shinki had become more humble about his abilities and more caring toward his teammates, Tōji assured them that his student already possessed the qualities necessary for promotion. Gaara indicated that if Shinki were promoted, he would become the team leader, allowing Tōji to return to the Counter-Terrorism Division. With a respectful smile, Tōji replied that it was never his intention to hold his students back out of selfishness and that it was a teacher’s duty to proudly admire their students when they became capable of walking their own paths. In the end, Tōji bid farewell to his genin team and assumed the position as the commander of the Counter-Terrorism Division — never forgetting how training Shinki, Araya, and Yodo had changed his life.
