Tamamo no Mae (玉藻の前) is an anomaly who hails from the era of Preeminent Emperor Konoe, a yōkai (妖怪, literally meaning: strange apparition) born from a dream made reality. She possesses a boundless curiosity for mankind, having observed as their greed overtook them and they brought others of their own kind to heel. As such she hid herself among them, becoming a beloved of Emperor Konoe, while secretly garnering glory in clandestine sects as a goddess who answers to those who earnestly kneel in supplication, their hearts set on pleasing her every desire.
By her very nature, Tamamo no Mae is defined by mayhem and chaos; she is a defiler of order and destroyer of harmony. She feeds off of the anguish and woes of others and thus has sown ruin and tragedy into the very fiber of creation. Tamamo no Mae has always been a bane of man, the thorn that pricks their side. In her foul words, she is merely the representation of the truest of freedoms that mortals shall never attain; but in the mind of the late Emperor Konoe, she is the terror that his love for her wrought.
The kitsune one day approached a man who had tread the earth far longer than she had, beholden to beings that defied conventional understanding. He was an enemy most foul in her eyes, so she challenged him to a game, one she believed she could never lose. But the man was nimble-witted and he prevailed against Tamamo no Mae. She should have been angry, but his triumph sparked something in her - and between them. But no good thing lasts forever; Tamamo no Mae's true nature would always prevail, so he was forced to seal her away within a stone that became known as the Sesshōseki (殺生石, literally meaning: Killing Stone). The kitsune's wrath at being betrayed by her lover destroyed anything that drew near. That is, until one day the Sesshōseki split into two and she was once again unleashed upon the world.
Personality[]
A creature of allure and treacherous grace, Tamamo no Mae’s beauty is a veil draped over a heart of pure malice. With a fox’s cunning and a mistress’s poise, she wields a charm sweet enough to enthrall emperors yet sharp enough to slit their throats as well. Behind her gilded smiles lies an ancient, calculating mind, one that delights in the slow unraveling of mortal foolishness. She is both goddess and yōkai, a tempest wrapped in silk, whose every gesture is a performance and every kindness a carefully laid snare. To love her is to dance on the edge of a blade; to trust her is to surrender to her.
Appearance[]
Abilities[]
Physical and Chakra Prowess[]
Though she lacks brute strength, her presence alone exudes an aura of mystique and her nine luxurious tails ripple with untamed chakra, each one a conduit of immense power. Her true might lies not in physical force, but in her mastery of illusions, curses, and spiritual abilities. Her chakra is laced with the primordial fury of a divine fox, capable of weaving disasters and grasping souls. She dances on the edge of reality, her techniques as refined as they are devastating, proving that true power needs no fist when it can command the very fabric of fate and ruin the promise of one’s future.
Hijutsu[]
Kushiinadahime (櫛名田比売, literally meaning: Wondrous Ricefield Princess) is a secret technique (秘術, hijutsu) of the devious Tamamo no Mae. It is with this power that she orchestrated the fall of kingdoms and bound others to her whims with a mere touch. With Kushiinadahime, Tamamo is capable of seamlessly converting her physical form into spiritual matter, rending herself immune to all types of phenomena acting only upon worldly things able to freely the border between various realms. It is an absurd ability that denies mere mortals the ability to interact with her, reserving the right for herself. It most notably grants her sovereignty over the soul itself, as she may grasp it with ease and twist it according to her whims, accomplishing feats of physical and metaphysical transformation considered divine. Memories, talents, one’s appearance and temperament - all such things are hers to reform or recreate.
All souls touched by Tamamo no Mae's are forever bound to her as henge (変化, changed beings) whether they know it or not, transcending even the grasp of death and fate. Kushiinadahime could be used to meddle with this link to connect the spirit of one with that of another, intertwining their lives and destiny in ways that even she cannot always predict. However, she cannot toy with the lives of beings beyond her scope - no greater power or divinity could be brought low by her. As for her intangibility, it is selective at best; techniques that work in numinous ways are more than able to affect her regardless.
Sansai Shichinan (三災七難, literally meaning: Three Calamities Seven Disasters) is another secret technique used by Tamamo no Mae and the hallmark of her detestable presence. It is through this power that she has wrought ruin upon this world and brought forth countless catastrophes. With it, she is granted the ability to will misfortune into existence, creating and eliciting misfortunate events that, in her words, are henceforth fated to occur. Ranging from plagues to natural disasters or even more personalized tragedies, there is nearly no limit to what she can put into motion so long as she possesses the will for it to happen. They may occur in the next few moments or several years later; to those incapable of discerning when themselves, only Tamamo no Mae knows.
This ability may even be used more actively, enabling Tamamo no Mae to tip the scales in her favor if those facing her have recently experienced "good fortune". What is considered good can include anything that is a net benefit to her foes; to onlookers this tipping of the scales is seen as the kitsune experiencing incredible luck and surviving impossible odds. An example of this is when she was skewered through the heart by one of Banri's spears - as Sansai Shichinan considered that occurrence as good for Banri, Tamamo no Mae was rendered immune to the armament's properties and retained no lasting injuries from the attack, thus turning his fortune into misfortune. There is, however, an upper limit to how much fortune she may tip in her favor before gaining diminishing returns and certain abilities may bypass this effect entirely. Additionally, while she may orchestrate calamities she is incapable of preventing her targets from overcoming them and foiling her underhanded schemes.
