History[]

Team toji

Team Tōji's first meeting at Sunagakure.

Due to Tōji's unwavering loyalty and exceptional abilities, Gaara recognized him as the perfect candidate to mentor his adopted son, Shinki. Shinki, despite being a prodigy, had begun to arrogantly assume that no challenge could rival his mastery of iron sand. By choosing Tōji as Shinki's sensei, Gaara intended to teach his son a crucial lesson: in the shinobi world, there will always be someone capable of neutralizing even our greatest strengths. This was a truth Gaara had learned firsthand as a genin when he faced Rock Lee’s initial strike. At first, Tōji felt considerable pressure from the Kazekage's request, doubting his ability to work with children after years of rigorous training and the demanding routines of the Counter-Terrorism Division. Even so, he agreed to take on the responsibility of training Shinki, Araya, and Yodo. In the team's early meetings, the lack of harmony among the genin was evident. Shinki was overly arrogant, Araya was so shy he could barely face others, and Yodo displayed a complete lack of interest in the group's dynamics. Training them proved to be a significant challenge for Tōji, especially with Shinki, who firmly believed he had nothing left to learn. Convinced he had already mastered everything under the guidance of his father and uncle, Shinki saw no value in Tōji’s teachings. To address this, Tōji challenged Shinki to a duel, showcasing the superiority of his copper techniques over Shinki’s iron sand. This encounter evoked exactly what Gaara had hoped for: fear. It was the same fear Gaara had experienced when facing Lee and later Naruto, a fear that made him feel truly human for the first time in years and ultimately allowed him to grow into a stronger shinobi and a better person.
