The Five Great Sages are five ninjas with an exponential amount of cooperation with their summonings and are masters of Sage Mode. In fact, Sage Mode was invented by the Original Five Great Sages. As soon as the Five Great Shinobi Nations were established, they were given the opportunity to be the protectors of the village of their choosing.
The Eagle-Owl Sage[]

The Eagle-Owl Sage is one who masters in Wind Release ninjutsu and regularly summons Eagle-Owls. The current Sage is unknown, but the original Sage, who is also nameless, was entitled "The Guardian of the Skies".
The Scorpion Sage[]

- Protector of: Sunagakure

The Scorpion Sage is one who masters in Dust and Wind Release ninjutsu and regularly summons Scorpions. The current Sage is Shūmitsu, who hasn't resigned, but has basically abandoned his duty as protector of Sunagakure and secretly works for an underground organization that trades forbidden items with other nations/villages. The original Sage, who is nameless, was entitled "The Guardian of Time".
The Bull Sage[]

The Bull Sage is one who masters in Earth and Wood Release ninjutsu and regularly summons Bulls and Oxen. The current Sage is unknown, but the original Sage, who is also nameless, was entitled "The Guardian of Earth".
The Salamander Sage[]

The Salamander Sage is one who masters in Water and Boil Release ninjutsu and regularly summons Salamanders. The current Sage is Kokukozu, who is apart of the infamous Akatsuki and also the Sixth Mizukage. The original Sage, who is nameless, was entitled "The Guardian of the Sea".
The Toad Sage[]

- Protector of: Konohagakure

The Toad Sage is one who masters in Water, Fire, and Oil Release ninjutsu and regularly summons Toads. There is currently no Toad Sage ever since Jiraiya was murdered by Pain. The original Sage, who is nameless, was entitled "The Guardian of the Eternal Ponds".
Headbands[]
All the Sages are required a specific headband. This headband has the symbol of their animal companion on it, written in both black paint and the leftover Chakra of the Jūbi, as there was not enough to make another Bijū when The Sage of Six Paths split it up. If this headband is ever broken, the Chakra immediately escapes the headband and enters the body of the Sage, which gives him an extreme boost of power and Chakra.
