Toshirō Shunsoku (俊足トシロー, Shunsoku Toshirō) was a shinobi originally from Uzushiogakure’s Shunsoku clan and an S-rank ninja of Konohagakure under the moniker Tailed Beast Without a Tail (尾を持たない尾獣, O o Motanai Bijū, Meaning (English TV): Tailless Tailed Beast), or simply Zero-Tails (零尾, Reibi),[2] who was instrumental in helping to end the Third Shinobi World War in Konoha’s favor with a flee-on-sight/do-not-engage order alongside his best friend, the Fourth Hokage. Toshirō, his wife, and son watched over Naruto Uzumaki throughout his early childhood before dying protecting Naruto from the masked man responsible for the Nine-Tails’ attack during a similar tragedy in Konoha.
Background[]
Personality[]
Despite his prestige and legendary shinobi status, Toshirō was a very humble and stoic man. Very perceptive and shrewd, he was noted as never doing something without a reason. Upon earning his moniker the Tailed Beast Without a Tail (尾を持たない尾獣, O o Motanai Bijū, Viz: Tailless Tailed Beast) after his fights against Kisame Hoshigaki or the Zero-Tails (零尾, Reibi)[3] along with a flee-on-sight order from Iwagakure, Toshirō remained respectful to his opponents and let them escape as they would dare not challenge openly. A very polite individual, he addressed others with the appropriate honorifics and disliked those who pry into other people’s affairs unless it was necessary. He was, however, the type to hold grudges like when he expressed hatred towards Danzō Shimura, the village elders, and even the Third Hokage to some extent. For instance, he protested and was adamant that assigning the Uchiha clan to live in the outskirts of the village would fuel hatred and distrust between the clan and the rest of Konoha which would be proven right years later. He also forged a bond with the Uchiha and being a huge supporter for them as he was loved and respected by the entire Uchiha clan, earned him the ire of Danzō. In another instance, the Hokage and village elders forbade anyone, including him, from adopting Naruto which caused Toshirō to generate and direct killing intent towards Konoha’s leaders, threatening to become an S-rank missing-nin and raise Naruto outside the village, away from the social stigma of being a jinchūriki by the village’s populace. He was, however, a man willing to compromise, as he agreed to join Anbu’s Team Ro and watch over Naruto from the shadows as he could somewhat help Naruto from the shadows under the codename Kage (影, Literally meaning: Shadow). Toshirō never hesitated to kill or harm any civilian who attempted to murder, attack, or mistreat Naruto and would directly interact with the boy alongside Kakashi Hatake and Itachi Uchiha. As a father, he was affectionate towards Shindō, telling them tales of his shinobi adventures, past shinobi legends from the Warring States Period, and was described by Shindō as a better teacher than Iruka Umino as he is boring when it comes to his lessons. This is where Toshirō expressed his stricter and sterner side of his personality, reprimanding him for not finishing his academics before training with Shindō in the shinobi arts. Shindō always looked up to his father as a symbol of strength and strove to be like him as a shinobi and as a person.
Appearance[]
Toshirō was a short man with olive skin and a pair of onyx-colored eyes. His hair was black, short, and spiky with the addition of a mustache and beard. His physique was hirsute and sturdy with his clothing hiding his muscles. A ninja originally from Uzushiogakure before it was destroyed, he wore an all-black outfit, long-sleeved brown T-shirt and a pair of blue baggy pants, gloves, and open-toed shinobi footwear―covered by a black flak jacket along with a crimson Uzushiogakure headband. He also had white shin-guards and a knee-length open-front white apron with a single row of black tomoe on the bottom all the way around. After Uzushiogakure’s destruction and becoming a Konoha shinobi, his outfit and accessories remained the same except his damaged black flak jacket was replaced by an olive one and his all-white attire replaced with a black jumpsuit to better suit his new environment and had his old Uzushiogakure headband tied around his waist as a makeshift belt. Off-duty, Toshirō donned a high-colored white shirt with the Shunsoku clan’s crest on the back, white pants cut midway at the calves, standard blue shinobi footwear, and black wristbands which have seals to store his weaponry. When training alongside Shindō, his attire consisted of a black high-collared shirt with short sleeves and the white Shunsoku clan emblem on the back, white knee-length shorts, bandages around his legs and forearms, and the standard blue shinobi footwear.
Abilities[]
As a Shunsoku, Toshirō had very strong and powerful chakra that was superhuman thanks to his clan’s kekkei genkai, the Rōtasumāku, gaining respect and praise from the Uchiha, Uzumaki, and Senju clans, respectively. He also drew fear, distrust, and ire from the Hyūga clan, village elders like Danzō Shimura, and even the Third Hokage because of his near-unrivaled power and skill. During the Third Shinobi World War, he earned a flee-on-sight order from every hidden village when he and Minato Namikaze defeated a battalion of shinobi from Iwagakure by themselves, bringing the war to an end in Konoha’s favor. As a shinobi, he was compared to the likes of other powerful ninja like Fugaku Uchiha and legends like Sakumo Hatake after the war ended. The upper limit of his capabilities was shown when he could singlehandedly keep the Nine-Tails at bay with Hiruzen and the rest of Konoha’s forces backing him up until the arrival of the Fourth Hokage. Chakra Reserves and Chakra Prowess[] Chakra exercise of the Shunsoku clan. Toshirō had equally immense physical strength and speed, contending with Kurama at its full power by himself. He can combine taijutsu and ninjutsu together to further enhance his speed beyond Kage level. Despite his large chakra reserves, Toshirō had perfect chakra control as shown when he can perform hand seals with just one hand, something very few shinobi can do. Kurama stated that he was comparable with Madara and Hashirama combined, expressing hatred for him after their brief battle.
Legacy[]
Before he died, he gave Naruto his nindō to never give up in the face of challenges and life or death, and there is always another way. will one day prove to the village that he is not the Nine-Tails, but instead the hero Minato and Kushina always wanted him to be, and he had complete faith in Naruto which fueled Naruto’s goal to be acknowledged. As for Shindō, he remembered his father as someone to look up to as a strong and powerful ninja, and strove to be like him, only for Toshirō to discourage him in following his footsteps and forge his own path. He also entrusted him to take care and protect Naruto before facing off and dying at the hands of
