The Treasured Tools of the Sage of Six Paths (六道仙人の宝具, Rikudō Sennin no Hōgu), also known as the Six Paths Sacred Treasures (六道の神器, Rikudō no Jingi),[1] are a set of five legendary tools used by the Sage of Six Paths himself.

History[]

All five tools were owned and used by the Sage of Six Paths along with many other legendary artifacts and items. Upon establishing Ninshū across the known world, he passed them down to his youngest son, Asura Ōtsutsuki, just before he died. During the Warring States Period, Raikō Shunsoku, a direct descendant of Asura Ōtsutsuki, owned and used all five treasured tools with complete mastery thanks to awakening a kekkei genkai he called Rōtasumāku. He earned the moniker Raikō of the Thunder (雷のライコウ, Kaminari no Raikō) and became the progenitor of the legendary Shunsoku clan in the Land of Whirlpools and Uzushiogakure, garnering both reverence and fear by all ninja clans including the Uchiha and Senju who can rival their power. Generations later, Kohaku no Jōhei was used by the whole Shunsoku clan to help the Ashina Uzumaki, First Hokage, and Madara Uchiha battle, subdue, and seal the tailed beasts. They were then divided evenly among the five hidden villages and a minor one, Takigakure, to ensure a balance of power between their nations. Years later, during the First Shinobi World War, three of the five hidden villages―Kumogakure, Iwagakure, and Kirigakure―together destroyed Uzushiogakure and the Land of Whirlpools, with Kumo stealing the five Six Paths Sacred Treasures.

Generations later, the Gold and Silver Brothers, Kinkaku and Ginkaku, who were related to the Shunsoku clan, would be responsible for using the treasured tools successfully. During the First Shinobi World War, the tools were used by the Gold and Silver Brothers who along with the Kinkaku Force managed to battle and successfully kill Tobirama Senju, the Second Hokage, but resulted in most of the tools being lost in the battle. Afterward, Kumogakure managed to retrieve at least one of the treasured tools, the Kohaku no Jōhei, that was used constantly to seal away both their tailed beasts and their jinchūriki who lose control.

Gold and Silver Brothers

Kinkaku and Ginkaku, the Gold and Silver Brothers.

During the Fourth Shinobi World War, Darui, Samui, and Atsui encountered the reincarnated Gold and Silver Brothers, still in possession of the rest of the treasured tools. They fought using the sacred items at their disposal, entrapping Darui’s teammates into the Benihisago; however, Darui managed to figure out the best course of action and stole at least the Benihisago and the Shichiseiken from Ginkaku before sealing him inside the Benihisago shortly after. While Darui felt the effects of using two of the tools once, he realized he just incurred Kinkaku’s wrath.

With the help of the Ino-Shika-Chō and their squad, and with the Kohaku no Jōhei in Darui’s possession, Kinkaku was defeated by successfully sealing him within the large item. Elsewhere, Tenten Higurashi stumbled upon one of the tools, the Bashōsen, and used it against the reincarnated Kakuzu before losing consciousness because of intense chakra exhaustion since all the tools consume vast amounts of chakra.

Later, Shindō found the Bashōsen and Shichiseiken on the battlefield. Thanks to his Rōtasumāku, there were no visible side effects afflicting him as he sealed both tools into a storage scroll before resuming his journey with meeting up on the front lines with the rest of his allies. Shindō sent shadow clones to seize the remaining three treasured tools Benihisago and the Kohaku no Jōhei with the Kōkinjō contained inside, sealing them in the same storage scroll with the other items, thus his goal of acquiring the Treasured Tools of the Sage of Six Paths was complete.

After the Fourth Shinobi World War, Shindō kept each of the treasured tools sealed within a storage seal on both his palms when not in use. Years later, he passed the Six Paths Sacred Treasures to his daughter because of her Uzumaki and Shunsoku heritage providing her with superhuman chakra reserves. Kura, in turn, learned how to wield them perfectly as her father and ancestors.

Bashōsen.

The Bashōsen (芭蕉扇, Literally meaning: Banana Palm Fan) is a large red and white fan that is able to generate all five of the basic elemental chakra natures. To do so, the user need only say a mental command, which produces substantial amounts of the desired element when the fan is waved. Like the other tools, it consumes enormous amounts of chakra when used, so much so that normal humans would die after using the tools for only a short period. While in the possession of Kumogakure, only the Gold and Silver Brothers possessed the large charka reserves necessary to wield the treasures without fatal repercussions. While not in use, the fan was stored inside Kinkaku’s body, drawing it from his mouth when needed.

Benihisago[]

Benihisago

Benihisago.

The Benihisago (紅葫蘆, Literally meaning: Crimson Gourd) is a giant brown-colored gourd with one red cloth around it, and its main function is to record a person’s word soul (言霊, kotodama, engtv: Spirit Word) and holds it hostage by verbally commanding the word “record” (録音しろ, rokuonshiro, engtv: record them). Once the word is drawn out by the Kōkinjō and then severed by Shichiseiken, it is absorbed into the gourd. These are the conditions necessary for “cursing” the victim; by saying the word they have said all their life, a homophone that uses their most frequently used word, or even remaining silent long enough will result in the victim getting sucked and trapped within Benihisago. If the victim is getting sucked into the gourd, they could change their most-used word to stop the process. Kurama noted that whatever is sucked into the Benihisago will remain trapped forever and is impossible to get out, even keeping those brought back with the Summoning: Impure World Reincarnation sealed within after the summoner releases the technique. Despite this rule, however, Darui managed to release his teammates Samui and Atsui after attaining the gourd, along with the Kōkinjō that was captured alongside its wielder. Like the other tools, it consumes enormous amounts of chakra when used, so much so that normal humans would die after using the tools for only a short period. It was primarily used by Ginkaku who used the Kōkinjō to tie the gourd around his neck for easier transportation; however, while in use, he must carry it with one arm since the rope is removed and used by Kinkaku for combat.

Kohaku no Jōhei[]

Kohaku no Johei

Kohaku no Johei.

The Kohaku no Jōhei (琥珀の浄瓶, Literally meaning: Amber Purifying Pot) is a large pot with the ability to seal anyone or anything within it, but only when the target responds when called by the wielder of the pot. Once the person responds, the pot records their voice and then seals them. This is a similar function to Benihisago, except with less preparation and more advanced. The pot has a stylized kanji for “lightning” (雷, kaminari) on it and has a thick white rope tied around its rim with a wooden top. In the anime, the pot held a dark ink-like liquid that the person sealed merges with. Like the other tools, it consumes enormous amounts of chakra when used, so much so that normal humans would die after using the tools for only a short period.

Kōkinjō[]

Kokinjo

Kōkinjō.

The Kōkinjō (幌金縄, Literally meaning: Golden Canopy Rope) is a thick lengthy rope. By saying the command “Bind and Draw Out” (しばり出せ, Shibaridase), it can draw out the word soul (言霊, kotodama, engtv: Spirit Word) of anyone the rope had physically contacted with, followed by Shichiseiken severing them. The item generates a visible bright yellow aura that can take the form of additional ropes to give it greater range and attack. Like the other tools, it consumes enormous amounts of chakra when used, so much so that normal humans would die after using the tools for only a short period.

When not used in battle, it was primarily used by Ginkaku to help carry the Benihisago around his neck; however, in combat, he let his brother wrap the rope around his left arm, using it in conjunction with the Bashōsen. After Ginkaku was sealed into Benihisago and Kinkaku transformed into his pseudo-jinchūriki six-tailed demon cloak in retaliation, he went on a rampage until he was sealed into the Kohaku no Jōhei by Darui and his allies, with the Kōkinjō also sealed inside the large pot before Tobi stole the container and the Benihisago. He had the Demonic Statue of the Outer Path consume both items so it could absorb all the Kyūbi’s chakra from the Gold and Silver Brothers. After Madara Uchiha spat out the Benihisago and Kohaku no Jōhei and they landed on Might Guy and Rock Lee, Shindō’s Shadow Clone unsealed the Kōkinjō from the Kohaku no Jōhei before sealing it alongside the Benihisago and Kohaku no Jōhei into the storage scroll as the Bashōsen and Shichiseiken.

Shichiseiken[]

320px-Shichiseiken

Shichiseiken.

The Shichiseiken (七星剣, Literally meaning: Seven Star Sword) is a light blueish broad sword with a brown talisman hanging from the bottom. By saying the command “curse” (呪え, noroe), it can be used to sever the word soul (言霊, kotodama) of those struck by the Kōkinjō, allowing the soul to be sucked into the Benihisago. Once these conditions are met, the victim is “cursed”; if they utter the word they have said the most in their life, use a homophone that combines the word they say the most, or remain silent for a certain period, they will get sucked into the Benihisago. Whatever this word is will be inscribed onto the Shichiseiken’s blade. The user can fold the blade to prevent their victim from seeing what it is; however, if their most-used word at any point, the inscribed word gets updated.

Like the other tools, it consumes enormous amounts of chakra when used, so much so that normal humans would die after using the tools for only a short period. Only the Gold and Silver Brothers possessed the large charka reserves necessary to wield the treasures without fatal repercussions. When not in use, Ginkaku stored the sword within his own body, drawing it from his mouth when needed.

Trivia[]

  • The Treasured Tools of the Sage of Six Paths alongside Ginkaku and Kinkaku, the infamous Gold and Silver Brothers, are all based on the same characters and tools from the Chinese classic Journey to the West. In the story, the two demon king brothers known as the Great King Ginkaku (金角大王, Ginkaku-daiō) and the Great King Kinkaku (銀角大王, Kinkaku-daiō) who lived in the Lotus Cave (蓮華洞, Rengedō) on Mount Heichō (平頂山, Heichōzan). They possessed the same five treasured tools, with opponents who are sucked into the Amber Purifying Pot and/or the Crimson Gourd beginning to melt once trapped within.
