The Twelve Guardian Ninja (守護忍十二士, Shugonin Jūnishi, English TV: Guardian Shinobi Twelve, literally meaning: Twelve Gentlemen Guardian Ninja), is an organization that is dedicated to the protection of the Land of Fire's daimyō as their bodyguard, the Royal Family, and the Daimyō Palace. Membership is indicated by the waistcloth they wear, marked with the kanji for "Fire" (火, Hi).

Overview

The group is composed of twelve skilled ninja drawn from around the Land of Fire. Their only task is to protect the country's daimyō and the Royal Family.

Since serving the royal family is the primary purpose of the Twelve Guardian Ninja, they do not interfere in Konoha's affairs and the defense of the village, even against major threat. They are known to do whatever is required by order of the daimyō therefore the Twelve Guardian Ninja's authority supersedes the authority of all within Konoha.

A person could choose to join the Twelve Guardian Ninja if a space became vacant (which means that at least one guardian ninja must resign, be expelled from the group or die.) However, in order for one to have become a Guardian Ninja once this position opened up, one must have been able to exhibit their strength towards the daimyō to win his approval. There are different types of people who hold this prestigious title, though a few are known to be S-Rank shinobi before even becoming a Guardian or have been considered exceptional shinobis their own right, the chosen candidate does not require Jōnin rank or higher and can vary to Chunin and even Genin (though a genin level candidate is very unlikely but not impossible). In fact, some members of the Twelve Guardian Ninjas do not even belong to Konoha and can even be a part of the surrounding lands belonging to or allied with the Land of Fire.

History

The establishment of the Twelve Guardian Ninja occurred at some point during the midway of the Second Hokage’s time.

Each of the Twelve Guardian Ninjas was appointed by the daimyō of the Land of Fire, ____, because of their skills and the interest they displayed in him.
