Uzumaki Clan (うずまき一族, Uzumaki Ichizoku), or known globally as the Clan of Longevity (長寿一族, Chōju Ichizoku), was a formerly prominent clan in Uzushiogakure. Its members are renowned for having bright red hair, incredibly strong life forces, superhuman chakra reserves, and their unrivaled fūinjutsu prowess. Despite the fall of Uzushiogakure and the decline of the clan, it never quite went extinct as most of its known members have since resided in Konohagakure. The clan itself was recognized as active again shortly after the Fourth Shinobi World War.
History[]
The Uzumaki clan is directly descended from Asura Ōtsutsuki, sharing blood with the Senju clan[1] since both clans split during the Warring States Period, settling in the Land of Whirlpools and forming their own village called Uzushiogakure. At some point, the legendary Raikō Shunsoku stumbled upon Uzushiogakure and helped protect it from enemies, becoming close with the clan who help him propagate the subsequent Shunsoku Clan.
The Uzumaki maintained ties with the Senju, with the Shunsoku forming a strong bond with them due to being direct descendants of the Sage of Six Paths. Following the founding of Konohagakure which ended the Warring States Period, the Senju chose to symbolize their clans’ friendship by adding the Uzumaki’s emblem to Konoha’s flak jackets and jōnin outfits. Konohagakure and Uzushiogakure remained close allies over the following decades, with the Uzumaki providing fūinjutsu (among other things) to Konoha whenever it was needed.[2]
The Uzumaki clan’s skill in fūinjutsu earned them respect and fear throughout the ninja world. During the First Shinobi World War, three nations banded together and launched the largest invasion in ninja history and successfully destroyed Uzushiogakure, but every noncombatant in the Uzumaki clan fled underground, except for Kushina Uzumaki, Toshirō Shunsoku, and his wife, Mina, who immigrated to Konoha after their village’s destruction. A deadly plague emerged the invasion of the Land of Whirlpools, forcing every invader to abandon their conquest of the island, but not before Kumogakure’s Gold and Silver Brothers stole the Six Paths Sacred Treasures from the Shunsoku compound before leaving the island.
Over the following decades, the Land of Waves was left abandoned, with Konoha patrolling its borders and unknowingly keeping the remaining Uzumaki trapped in the Land of Waves. Tajima and all remaining Uzumaki moved underground to escape the chakra virus above ground, only coming out when necessary, like hunting or gathering food and water. A new society was created, and it was distrustful of outsiders, especially Team Kakashi. Kakashi fought Ameyuri Ringo and her squad to prevent them from conquering Whirlpool Country, plundering its treasures, and capturing the remaining Uzumaki. Oni and Naruto Uzumaki fought to the death, with the Nine-Tails’ jinchūriki learn about Konoha’s biggest, darkest secret. Kabuto Yakushi snuck into the underground Uzumaki society and successfully stole the Shinigami Mask for Orochimaru from one of their temples and then fought Neji Hyūga on his way out.
Abilities[]
The Uzumaki clan naturally possesses an incredibly strong life force. As such, they have very long lifespans and likewise age slower;[3] Mito Uzumaki was born before the founding of Konoha yet lived well into the reign of the Third Hokage while still retaining full coloring in her hair. This also enables them to survive and endure much more severe injuries while likewise being able to recover from injuries and exhaustion with much greater efficiency in short periods. Even with the removal of tailed beasts, they can survive longer than most jinchūriki and even fight in a severely weakened state before succumbing to death.
In addition to their life forces, the Uzumaki were most famed for their fūinjutsu, the seal of which typically appears as a spiral crest reminiscent of their clan’s symbol. It has been a known tradition that each Uzumaki creates their own sealing technique like when Kura Uzumaki created and used Uzumaki Sealing Style: Eight-Pillared Iron Weights in battle.
Some members, Kushina and — to a lesser extent — Karin, also possessed a unique form of chakra with special properties which made them especially well-suited to become jinchūriki and produce golden adamantine chains made from their chakra.[4][5] They can even incorporate their chakra chains to erect a strong barrier that can even trap or restrain a tailed beast against its will. As demonstrated by Karin, her chains can resist Sakura’s enhanced punches and effortlessly break through Tobi’s wood-based attacks, resisting its chakra-suppressing properties. Himawari and Menma Uzumaki both were able to use their Uzumaki chakra chains to reverse the Hanabi’s Eight Trigrams Palms Revolving Heaven and cancel everything out while counterattacking, showing that the adamantine chains are an extension of their will.
Uzumaki have an affinity for kenjutsu, and have adapted both their fūinjutsu, chakra chains, and physical abilities into a style called Dance of the Maelstrom which can cut down jōnin-skilled shinobi. This kenjutsu fighting style earned Kushina Uzumaki earned the moniker Konoha’s Red Death (赤い死, Akaishi, Viz: Crimson Death) during the Third Shinobi World War, followed by her son who took it to the next level by layering his sword with elemental ninjutsu on top of Sage Mode, Nine-Tails Chakra Mode, and later Six Paths Sage Mode during the Fourth Shinobi World War. Later, his children Himawari and Menma Uzumaki would attempt to combine this kenjutsu style with the Gentle Fist after inheriting their mother’s Byakugan, a dōjutsu which the Uzumaki now possesses and growing closer with the Hyūga clan.

- The name “Uzumaki” can either mean “whirlpool” or “maelstrom”.
- Red hair was a common trait amongst Uzumaki clan members.[6]
- Tsunade and Nawaki Senju are descendants of the Uzumaki clan through their grandmother.
- Due to Naruto Uzumaki having children with Hinata Hyūga, all his direct descendants can awaken the Byakugan, meaning the Uzumaki is the only other clan that possesses not only a kekkei genkai, but one of the “Three Great Dōjutsu”.
- The anime character Honoka is hinted to be an Uzumaki, as she has red hair and fūinjutsu talents. A book found by Aoba in the same episode mentions finding a survivor of a “certain clan of ninja”.[7]
- In the novel, however, she is one of many surviving Uzumaki who guards the newly rebuilt Uzumaki Temple.
- Menma Namikaze, an Infinite Tsukuyomi counterpart of Naruto Uzumaki, is a descendant of the Uzumaki clan by his mother.
- In the novel, however, he is the son of Naruto and possesses the Byakugan alongside his little sister.
