Water Release: Whirlpool is a technique where the shinobi uses pre-existing water to create a whirlpool beneath the opponent's feat. The technique is capable of creating both small and very large whirlpools it is in the right hands.
The technique is performed by the user forming the series of hand seals required for the technique and then placing their hands on the body of water the target is standing on. Water chakra is flowed from the hands to the body of water to force the opposing currents around the target to meet and form a whirlpool around the target that will drag them under. The power and size of the technique can be changed by adding or subtracting water chakra to increase or decrease the power of the whirlpool.
The power and size can also be changed without adding more chakra, but it takes a lot more skill to do so most opt for the former way. In order to change the power without adding more chakra, the shinobi must change how quickly the water chakra is rotating around the opponent, which would change effect the water in the same way and by the same amount. The size can be increased without adding more chakra by spreading out the water chakra in the water more, which would affect a larger area and cause the whirlpool to expand.
Shinobi who use this technique more often than not will use Water Release: Waterspout right after because the technique was created for such a purpose. This may be why the technique is considered a supplementary spell as well an offensive technique because it sets the user up to perform Water Release: Waterspout. Water Release: Whirlpool can be used by itself to great results, especially when combining it with a Fūinjutsu to seal the target in the whirlpool.
